Fiat Multipla: Pure Ugly or Pure Genius?

The Fiat Multipla is one of the most infamous car designs in history. But if you can get past the looks, there are some pretty innovative things happening with this design.

I bought one of these in 2001, an ex demonstrator with 4,000 miles on the clock. My wife said she wouldn’t be seen dead in it, my teenage daughters went Wow! Ten years and 120,000 miles later we had to say goodbye to it. My wife literally cried. We all loved it, it was just the most fantastic car. I just wish there was something as individual around now.

Sad that most people can't respect the Multipla. It might be different but at least it's a fun design, not the same old windtunnel designed boring blob and it's practical. Besides that... Isn't it amazing that at one point there must've been a meeting at FIAT where they saw drawings of the Pla and said "Yeah we'll make that!". That alone I find so amazing!

Being a car guy I must have had around 100+ different cars and never got what the fuss about Multipla was. One day I stumbled on one, sitting in a random school parking lot. First I laughed, like many would. Little while later I could not get it out of my head and I just had to have it. Checked the ads, but none up for sale, because it is considered rare locally and makes sense. Official statistics are public and it turned out that there are 30 Multiplas in my country, 5 of them being the most attractive petrol+factory CNG. Kept my eye out if I ever passed the school again where I last saw it. One day it was there again, just left the note - give me a call if you want to sell it. Week later I was a Multipla owner, which turned out to be one of those CNG ones. Took it home and showed to gf: "Check this out". She wasn't happy and told me she will never drive it. Fast forward a few weeks, she did drive it and was positively impressed. Little time later it turned out that she went to work with it on her own ( leaving earlier than me and me finding no Multipla in the yard )and just started liking it. Practicality is through the roof, ridiculously eco also. Very well thought through and more car makers should do that - too much unusable and wasted space in pretty much everything nowadays. Have helped out a lot moving something, even 200x80cm bed fit in with the boot closed, yet it could not have been done in our other station wagon which on the paper is full 1m longer. Gf has taken our kid + 4 friends out without problems many times now. Kids though don't see it's looks, it fits right in and they rather see it's practicality - great view, foldable tables for drive in meals - perfect. All those back in the day negative reviews have stuck to older people and it's sad to not see past the looks. Looks aren't driving people! And the cng part, blast from the past before it was cool and fits very well into today. Gf even said it must be the best car i have had so far, considering everything. If one made Excel list with + and -, the + section would be way longer than pretty much any other car's. Still have it and it is mechanically in perfect condition atm. Great underrated car, bang for $ through the roof if not the best in that price range, no real reasons not to own one, great icebreaker and conversation starter also.

Owned one of these cars in the early 2000s and it was a fantastic car but wasn’t without its faults, it would chew through a set of front tyres in about 7000 miles, you would be lucky to get 25 to the gallon or above 70 mph with the petrol engine because it was so underpowered even turning the air con on sapped the energy out of it and it had a penchant for front suspension ball joints , but it was such a well designed comfortable car and it was lovely to drive if you didn’t rush it, and every passenger had an individual seat that could be folded or removed as needed i even picked up a second hand dining table and six chairs with it once .Sadly it fell victim to a patch of black ice on a bend and was written off ,good car generally though.

This is a truly tiny 6 seat car, again it is tall, only 18 inches longer than a mini, the same width as a mini and yet it seats 6 people with 3 rows of seats. This car looks very nice and has mega practicality. I love the design of the Dante Giacosa original multipla the best. I do find the modern version quite ugly but I would still drive one because they are so different!

This car says: "I don't have to pose, but get a family somewhere!" Thing is of course, the proportions could have been changed slightly without ruining the genius space concept, say: higher waist line/less glass + the changed front, they did with the facelift. On the other hand, when looking at todays mainstream look, you can't distinguish 80% of the brands, even some that used to have their own distinctive design language over 50 years. The only car it makes sense comparing the Multipla to is the London Taxi cab TX4 - which isn't a beauty, either.

In its year of introduction I clearly remember my first thought: "What idiot is supposed to buy such a "car"? ... without any clue, that I would be one of these "idiots" only four years later when purchasing a brand new 2003 Bipower model. Although I missed the right time to sell it to this date and repair costs increased more and more, I still love it. Another most overseen advantage: Theft protection is perfectly achieved only by its design. 😆

Kudos to FIAT for doing something bold and original. The car's design is all about maximum practicality, which also translates into a very distinctive personality. I first saw the Multipla in 1999 at MoMA, when it was brought in as a design showcase, and knew right away it was brilliant. It's not every day that something interesting like that happens in the automotive world. It should have been offered with an A/T, though, but that's Italy for you.

People who say the Multipla is ugly, can't even afford one. This Fiat is much luxurious than any BMW/Audi and Mercedes, starting with ugly SUV's like X6, X7, 7 series, 1 series and i3 electro-fart. Along with ugly huge grille. Also Mercedes Benz. Also who the fuck needs Bugatti and other supercars when you can have this pure luxury? The Germans aswell other modern cars have those useless screens, too much unreliable electronics that are buggy, unreliable, unreliable engines which they are unfixabld and made for scrap. Besides Multipla, it dosent have those useless screens, it has a ton of space for cargo, you can put 5 bicycles, three seats, if you dont have middle passenger, you can flip a seat and also take a breakfest, 4 cups for drinks on front and rear seats. This car makes me smile, more than peasents who drive stupid SUV's. And massege to haters one more time 🖕🏻🖕🏻🖕🏻: Shut your mouth you modern car or supershitcar, SUV hater towards Multipla who can't even afford one. Drive your gay unreliable computerized junk until it breaks down and gets towed to scrap. #HatersGonnaHate #BestCarEver #BestLuxuryCarEver #BetterThanGermans

honda fr-v looked better, it was available with awd and automatic, was more powerful and way better for fit and finish. Fiat got a good idea, japaneses made it with a nice vehicle. that multipla is pure SHlT

These things are so damn ugly, but I want one so bad. Its too bad Fiat never sold them in the US. I'm going to try and import a pre-facelift version into the US when it turns 25 years old. I want to try and import a JTD variant, which is the diesel model, and make it roll coal .

sorry but everything you stated is bs. You design theoretist clearly doesnt understand what design is. Even your master doesnt, contemlating on Giolitos effort to be different. Its styling what you are meaning not design. Giolito did it because it was needed to fullfill the requirements. He was designing and that made it unique shape. If its nice or ugly is about taste. In my opinion it is nice because it works. Thats my taste based on for example. Form follows function(nature). Thats designing. Even those rear light clusters are result of function. It could end up sqeare shape or curvy. And clearly they choosen curvy style cuz it matched the whole car shape better. That is the only result of styling on outer part of this car based on designed(aerodinamics etc) outer shape. I aplaud to Giolito that he did not try to correct his design by styling to get more likable, fashionable etc.

@@Design.Theory Yes there also you are conecting words "design" and "ugly". You as a "design theoretist" shouldont do that mistake. You can conect words "styling" and "ugly" or "design" and "inpractical (not functional)", If we are dealing with first 60 seconds. Educate those people who are watching you. Dont keep them in error using that word "design" when they mean styling.
