Fiat 500 vs Cinquecento - Small Fiat Family Feud! (1971 500 L & 1996 899 SX Road Test)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

WIN with Lancaster Insurance: bit.ly/3cfKu2k
The original Fiat 'Nuova' 500 revolutionised small cars with its compact dimensions, remarkable packaging, stylish looks and loveable character. It proved a city car designed for the fuel-starved times of the Suez Canal crisis could be charming and fun and went onto be Italy's people's car to rival the BMC Mini, Volkswagen Beetle and Citroen 2CV. The '500' name was revivied in the early 1990s with the Cinquecento, a modern city car featuring improved safety, performance and more modern equipment. The two cars share a name, but are separated by nearly 40 years - are they together in spirit?

Here's an interesting fact about the Cinquecento you were testing, that car is an ex Hertz rental car, if you look at the passenger side rear window there is a purple and white sticker on the glass, this was the cars unique unit number sticker, I used to work for Hertz many years ago and we had to put these stickers on every hire car, that and no smoking stickers and insurance excess stickers. I'm amazed its lasted on there all these years ☺️

My Dad bought a black Chinky Sporting in '97. Red piping = extra 10HP. We went on holiday to the Dales (3 of us plus luggage, and I'm 6'4" in the passenger seat, no problem fitting in). Great little runner.

Nice little cars! I didn't live either in this era or part of the world, but the little 90s Suzuki Swift is the mini car that I remember the most.

My first car was a 1997 Cinquecento S. Nothing on it to go wrong. I even managed to get five of us in it once. Underrated and you don't see many of them anymore.

@@ClassicsWorldUK It wasn't very fast at the best of times - never mind with five 17-year-olds in it! Wish I still had it - like Joe - in many ways. Installed the sporting centre console, and found a parcel shelf with speaker holes cut in, to fir the obligatory 6x9s every 17 year-old needs.

Back in the early 70s a friend's mother had a Fiat 500 nicknamed 'Bombo' which my friend was allowed to use. One Saturday night my friend rolled it on a roundabout and onto it's roof. He and his passenger righted it and he limped it home leaving it on the drive. Sunday morning he was awakened by his mother bursting into his bedroom demanding to know what he had done to her beloved Bombo. Unsurprisingly he never got to drive it again.

My first car was a Cinquecento Sporting. ‘95 reg, Postman Pat red. It was lovely, but after the rad blocked up for the umpteenth time and the calipers seized on yet again, with the result that I was almost harpooned by a bus in Bristol, it had to go. Was four years old when I sold it. Edit, oh and spot on. Mine would do 45mpg everywhere. Town, country, loaded up with two big blokes doing 100mph down the M4. Which is saying something, because if memory serves they wouldn’t actually do that speed… I cannot honestly say I miss it, but as a first motor it was fab.

I could be tempting with a sporting. Of my first 5 cars, 3 were Fiat. An Uno, a Tipo and a Punto. The Punto was the best. 90ELX with a 1.6 8v engine and full sporting body kit. Loved that car! Put 80k on it and only think it ever had was a wheel bearing beyond normal servicing!

I had a Cinquecento and a Seicento, and although the Seicento outlasted the Cinquecento(thanks to Italian electrics) they were both fun, fizzy cars, loved them both.

The 500 is cute and an icon - its only when you see it alongside a modern 500 you can appreciate how small it was and how good the reincarnation was - however the Cinquecento all the way for me - more modern - safer ( respectively ) and still usable and was made in Poland !!!

Yep, gears were grinding because you should double clutch to downshift and do a “false double clutch” to upshift, basically putting in neutral between each upshift, and blipping a bit!

Nice little cars, as well as building them to “mobilise the masses” it was also to tempt Vespa and Lambretta riders off their scoots and into a car. Italians love their scooters.

@0:21 It wasn't meant to be a successor and it is a completely different car. The Cinquecento is the sucessor of the Fiat 126 not the 500.

Well done lads on a brilliant super minis video! 🚗 I was lucky to potter about in a 1998 FIAT Punto SX. It was boxy, roomy, spacious, yet very revvy in the same way as the Cinquecento. Remove the air filter and you'd have a tiny Ferrari F355 (sort of). Frugal on fuel and easy to work on. I still fancy FIAT since the recipe never really changed, be it practicality and being cheerful little cars to drive. However, I think that the new FIAT disappoints with very little choice in their model line-up. Video request: could you please review a '63 Beetle and pit it against a 2003 New Beetle for the Dubbers.

Italian small engines were fun. Growing up had Punto 1.2 convertible with a 1.2 16 valve 85bhp engine which loved to rev. It was so much more fun to do so than the mini (new one) convertible that replaced it despite that being a 1.6 and the 1.4 mark 3 polo I had at the time.

Fiats are great cars, but sadly they're criminally underrated here in the UK. I've been old enough to drive for nearly 15 and a half years now, and for more than 12 and a half of those years, I've been a Fiat owner... My 1st car was a Daewoo Matiz, perhaps you could feature 1 of those, so people know that the few survivors are worth saving?
