Fiat 500 S Review | Driver's Seat

The reincarnation of Fiat’s dinky 500 began in 2007 when the classic three-door city car from the 1950s was reimagined, retaining the original’s classic looks.
In 2015, the 500 received a facelift, giving it a new lease of life and featured new technology and improved efficiency.

However, Fiat has been looking to make the Abarth brand a standalone proposition rather than a tuned version of a standard Fiat. That meant the revised Fiat 500 lost a sporty proposition. Enter the 500S.
Available with a choice of four engines (1.2-litre petrol, two 0.9-litre petrol and a 1.3-litre diesel), it gets a more menacing look with 15in alloy wheels, a sporty bodykit, including front bumper, side skirts and a rear spoiler, a honeycomb grille, chrome exhaust pipe and front fog lamps. There're exterior features finished in Satin Graphite such as the door handles and wing mirror housings.
On the inside, the 500S gets sports seats with contrasting trim, sports steering wheel, contracting door finishes (finished in blue, yellow or white) and there’s a Satin Graphite finish to the dashboard trim.
Standard equipment includes seven airbags, ABS with electronic brake distribution, electronic stability control and hill holder.
We’re testing the 500S with the 1.2-litre engine which comes fitted with 3D TomTom sat-nav (£250), leather interior (£850), 16in matt black diamond cut alloy wheels (£200), and Beats 440W sound system (£300).

I test drove one of these recently while I was on the hunt for my first car. Truly loved it, fantastic little thing that's perfect for a first car. Personally I've never adapted to a car so quickly.

Ive had a 500S in grey for a year now and I have to say in my many years of driving this is my favourite car I've ever owned. And yes it is a city car but I've done quite a few motorway journies of over 200 miles and it copes fine with them. Space in the back is definitely limited but I have had 2 adults in the back for a one hour trip and it was adequate. The only complaint I ever hear from people is that the suspension is too hard, but that's what you get for buying the Sport model - and it pays off on a twisty country road: it's completely stable.

I don’t think the S trim has any effect on the ride. It’s just a trim level. You’ll only notice a difference if you jump from the Fiat to Abarth

@@greenawayr08 The sport has stiffer suspension and low profile tires, quite a bit different from the pop at least here in the US. I have had mine for about a week now and it's a lot of fun on twisty coastal backroads, totally a go cart feeling.

I have just bought one in black. It has the same interior trim but not that snazzy screen. Got to say your review is spot on. I love mine and it is perfect for my needs. I got two small children who fit perfectly in the back.

We chose the 105 bhp Twin Air. With its little turbo it really goes when it gets into its mid-range and surges forward in a surprisingly rapid manner. It has six gears too.

It's great, Kevin. Just the job if you haven't got much parking space and there are only two of you in your family. Not much room in the back, but enough hatchspace for a holiday. It's a bit noisy on pulling away but it settles down to a very quiet cruise. We've had no problems so far (fingers crossed, it's Italian!).

Well you are certainly not going to get the much-touted 80 mpg! Driving carefully we get about 55 mpg on a long motorway trip. Around town (with the occasional burst of balls-out speed) we get about 35 to 38 mpg.

Like these very much. Thinking about buying one. Has to be in Electronica Blue. Just a stunning colour. Had one as a hire car (a Lounge spec, with the 0.9L engine and Dualogic auto box) in Menorca earlier this year and it was a hoot to drive.

I really like this version of the Fiat 500 rather than the American version. Here in the states we still get the old version. The Fiat 500s version and other special eds is not available here. I like the rims on this car too!

You are the 1st person I hear saying the ride is not good. Lol. If its too hard, its no good. If it was too soft, it wouldnt be good either..lol. Harder means safer. Its so hard to see people doing a very honest review of a Fiat. Its the way peoples mind are already set. The only true and very honest review I have see of these 500 was done by Automan TV. Anyway, a review is only a personal thing and nothing else. Its not based on nothing apart from personal likes or dislikes and preference.

@@daviddonne7333 It is the standard engine for the "sport" or "S" version sold in Australia from 2007 to 2016. For 2016 on the sport was replaced with a low spec Abarth. My 2015 1.4L 6 speed Sport is a lot faster than my daughter's 1.2L 5 speed 2015 Pop. Plus the 1.4 has a lot more low end torque.

So many cars today that you do not fit properly in the back seat. Cars today are bigger from the outside but smaller in the inside and the smaller cars have bigger interiors than many bigger cars. I went for a ride a few weeks ago in a A4 in the back and it was horrible. No room at all. Super tight. But because it is a Fiat people will always say some extra things. Lol

Silly complaint about the back of the car. If you are someone who needs a car with enough room for people to be comfortable in the back then you would not be buying a Fiat 500. You should review this as a sporty hatchback, not a family car..
