Designed as a light support weapon / machinegun for paratroopers, but when you look at it in hindsight with modern sensibilities the FG-42 was really a Cold War era battle rifle except in the 1940s, maybe even late / post Cold War because of that scope mount. The StG-44 was more revolutionary but the FG-42 was probably the most advanced small arm of WW2.

But then again, also the fighting spirit of the German Fallschirmjaeger was. I'm currently reading the excellent book of Volker Griesser - Lions of Cartentan - Fallschirmjaeger Regiment 6. This regiment was considered by the Germans as one of their strongest fighting formations.

Well, I guess you could argue that the Federov Avtomat was technically the first select-fire battle rifle, as it was chambered in 6.5 Arisaka. It's really only that, the early variants of the BAR, and the Russian AVS-36 which come pretty close, but the FG-42 is definitely a very early, no-question select-fire battle rifle. Edit: Cei-Rigotti was first select-fire, 6.5x52 Carcano in the late 1890s

Thanks again, gents. Nice work as usual. I was a new private in the Army's 2nd RGR Bn in 1988. Our team leaders had M14's. The Crew served weapon was the M60. Ask a team leader or 60 gunner ..'if you could have any weapon....' they would answer : The German FG 42 and M3, respectively. A team leader could effectively direct or concentrate the fire of his riflemen and grenadiers with that M14 in low light or dense terrain without any yelling or comms; not to mention, put some firepower and accuracy down range, fast. There was never any mistaking the sound and tracers of that M14. I would love to have seen what we could have done with that FG in Panama. Peace. Keep up the great edu and vids.

That's definitely my favorite WW2 weapon other than M1 carbine and Browning Hi Power. Sweet ! Not sure if I'd be standing in the middle of a river with another person's $250,000 weapon that is nearly irreplaceable. But that's just me.

Hell yeah! It's a shooting iron, not a collect-dust iron. I mean, I get it - don't break anything, 'cause you don't want to mess up the matching numbers and spare parts would have to be custom fitted, decreasing the gun's value etc. But if it's just stored away somewhere, without even knowing if it's functional, then it's nothing more than a worthless paperweight anyway, in my opinion. Fell in love with that thing when I first saw Ian shoot a replica of it on Forgotten Weapons some time ago. It's on my unicorn list ever since...and I fear it'll stay there for a long time.

"Germans feared the BAR" And our boys LOVED that gun. "Having a BAR man in your squad was like having a mini German 88."-WW2 Vet. And I heard some troops welded two 20 round box mags together for a total of 40 huge .30-06 red hot golf balls flying at you.

M Via exactly. That's because why paratroopers rejected to use the BAR. Other problem was the poor fire volume of the US squads compared to Germans ones.

  • @Stabsnipers

@M Via I'm sure opinions varied between the troops. If I had to lug one around I would hate the weight but then when the shooting starts I'd be glad to have one. As for accuracy goes, it all depends on how skilled the gunner is. But the point is moot as the Germans didn't fear the BAR for it's accuracy, they seemed to fear just the sound of it's booming report. Such a loud gun being fired at you is enough to demoralize you even if you're not being hit.

  • @Stabsnipers

@Tom Sanders Regardless, the US military still saw the need for an automatic weapon that just one infantryman could carry and the Garand wasn't fully automatic. The BAR was an automatic rifle being used in a light machine gun role, and it seemed to work just fine, after all we won the war and the BAR helped our side achieve that victory.

Little-known fact: Just like the M14, the FG-42 can be charged by standard 5-round stripper clips. In this case, from the right side, pushed into the magazine. In a break in combat, you don't have to fiddle with mag spoons or individual rounds.
