  • @SAOin-np1np

    Arthas (the one with the white long hair) was a good person who inherited Uther's (the mc in this cinematic) believes/morals and a strong Paladin who served the Light until he got corrupted down the line. The path he took to try and stop Mal'Ganis (a Dreadlord/Demon) who he thought was responsible for the Scourge (the undead) and the death of his people, is what led him to pick up the cursed blade Frostmourne (the one you see sucking half of Uther's soul) which slowly consumed him. Frostmourne not only absorves other people's souls, but also consumes the wearer's own soul bit by bit until nothing's left. This is the reason why his hair started turning white. He was originally blonde before picking up the sword. The action itself was noble since all he tried to do, he did to try and save his kingdom. He even states back in Warcraft III that he would do anything, even condemning his soul, if that meant the salvation of Lordaeron (his homeland). Arthas: "Now, I call out to the spirits of this place, I will give anything or pay any price, if only you will help me save my people." Even after he fell down the path of righteousness and became the Lich King (the King of the Undead), the remnants of his soul/being still held back the Scourge from destroying Azeroth (the world) by confining them all into one place (Northrend). To be honest, I think this was serious considering he was never judged and might have not even been assigned to the Maw (Hell) but another place for his redemption which I feel like he deserves since he was not himself when he did those atrocities. Also, remember in the beginning when Uther says: "Light, save my soul."? When he is killed by Arthas, half of his soul (yellow) is saved by the Light and sent to Bastion while the other half (blue) is trapped inside Frostmourne (the sword). This explains why Uther can't let go and why he acted the way he did. In the end of the Wrath of the Lich King, when Frostmourne is broken and all the souls are set free, Uther's other half forgave Arthas. Devos (the angel) also had a part in how this all unfold. The fact his soul is "broken" and her influence, made Uther throw him into the Maw (the equivalent of Hell). It was something no one was expecting coming from him since he is one of the most righteous characters in all of Warcraft. That's the reason he went to Bastion in the first place.

    @@wabachi I think Arthas's character flaws are a bit different. He was easily overcome by rage and a desire for revenge that Arthas told himself was really justice. That self deception and penchant for revenge are what was exploited to draw him into taking up Frostmourne. He was never *that* good.. (imo) Now that you mention it (and thank you, BTW) An interesting, and probably critical difference between Uther, the paladin and Arthas the paladin was Uther really all about retribution (justice) and Arthas was all about retribution (revenge). and now that I think about it... it's the same character flaws that allowed Annakin Skywalker to be seduced to joining the Sith. For context, Arthas, who was corrupted and taken over by/became the Lich King is a fan favorite and beloved character that made next to no major appearances in the game or out of it, in books, lore or otherwise since 2010 until now. Seeing him, along with Uther (The one who threw him into the Maw) his teacher and uncle-like figure, was personally very heart wrenching yet filled myself and others with this melancholic feeling and excitement for what's to come. Seeing Arthas' body plummet to the place where only the most absolutely irredeemable souls go, was very emotional, given before being taken ahold of by the Lich King, he was an extraordinarily brave, courageous, loving, charismatic, devoted young man. Blizzard assured us they didn't want to ruin the perfect story they had already basically wrapped up with him in Shadowlands but I have a feeling we will be seeing him again. Hopefully the righteous paladin on his way towards some sort of redemption or peace. it's also worth noting that upon his death/sentence to the maw, as the lore stated before Shadowlands, he manifested into a childlike state, tormented by all the ungodly, inhumane atrocities he committed while under control. Left crying, alone and burdened by images of the countless souls he was forced to bring an end and tormented by numerous horrors and specters of the Afterlife.

    That was Uther the Lightbringer, first Paladin, Highlord of the Knights of the Silver Hand, the order of Paladins. He trained Prince Arthas Menethil to become a paladin. He was Arthas' mentor until Arthas gave up his soul to claim to Frostmourne and became a death knight. Arthas then killed his father and ransacked his kingdom, killing its citizens and raising them into undeath before returning to Northrend and donning the Helm of Domination, merging with the Lich King. When Arthas killed Uther, his soul was split in two. The compassionate side stayed as a ghost on Azeroth, while the vengeful side went to the Shadowlands. Uther cast Arthas' soul into the Maw, which is like the Hell of Warcraft. So that is basically what happened. I am not choosing the Kyrian of Bastion as my covenant, I am going with the Venthyr of Revendreth.

  • @nergal9668

    @nergal9668

    One small correction. When Arthas kills someone with Frostmourne it absorbs the person's soul. Uther's soul, however, was split in two causing only half of it to be absorbed by Frostmourne while the other half went to Bastion. This entire cinematic takes place before (and somewhat during) Wrath of the Lich King. When Arthas was defeated Frostmourne was shattered and the souls it had absorbed were freed, at which point that half of Uther's soul became a ghost on Azeroth.

    So the scene the video starts out on and returns to after a bit is an event that occurred in Warcraft III. This is when Arthas kills Uther in order to retrieve the urn holding his (Arthas') father's ashes. Frostmorne doesn't steal half of a person's soul, but rather steals the soul outright which powers the sword and the wielder. Due to reasons we don't fully know (AFAIK) yet, Uther's prayer to the Light allowed part of his soul to be sent to the Shadowlands like normal. This part, however, was purely his retributive, Paladin self who only wished for justice. In various parts of WoW players have been able to interact with the part of Uther who was sealed within Frostmorne. This part is much more like Uther's actual self as he comes to view and informs the players that Arthas is as much of a victim of the blade as he is. This tear is most likely why Uther still retained the wound from Frostmorne even in the Shadowlands. The scene where Uther and Devos go to claim Arthas's soul is straight from a WotLK cinematic. And Bastion is one of the realms of the Shadowlands, which is what Sylvanas ripped a portal of sorts to in the launch cinematic. The other realms that are featured are Ardenweald, Maldraxxus, Revendreth, and the Maw. Typically a person dies, angels from Bastion retrieve their souls, they're brought to the Shadowlands where their soul is judged, and they are placed in an appropriate realm. Those who lived holy, self-less lives would go to Bastion, those with a draw to nature would go to Ardenweald, those who showed might in battle were sent to Maldraxxus, and those who lived sinful lives were sent to Revendreth to repent and, under normal circumstances, they would then be sent to an appropriate realm once they've repented. The problem is that at some point the Jailer had all souls get sent straight to the Maw, his realm, and the leaders of Revendreth began using the penitent souls basically as anima batteries and then throwing them to the Maw after they've served their usefulness. Other things are the forests of Ardenweald have been dying due to a drought in anima, Maldraxxus' inner factions are warring with each other, and there's a split between the people of Bastion (as you can see in this video).

    Uther unwittingly has done a greatly evil deed. Despite him qualifying for immediate ascension himself, he has denied Arthas not only his fair judgment, but also his chance at redemption as well. The Maw is supposed to be only for those who were judged poorly, and were irredeemable as well. Further, Uther is unaware that the sins of Arthas as the Lich King, were done against his will, via the Helm of Domination. Arthas is innocent.

    Arthas was proud and driven by anger even before he got the Helm. As I recall, he was warned, multiple times by multiple people, that chasing Frostmourne is folly, but he did it anyways. Also, even according to this video, Uther did not qualify for ascension. It was granted to him by a kyrian who herself disagreed with how things are done. Don't ask me how that stuff works. I'm not that deep into the lore. But some aspects of the story unfold further in Shadowlands.

    @@GuerillaBunny Being driven by anger is a far cry from being the Lich King. Also, he wasn't driven by anger at the Culling of Strathholme. He did the right thing there, but Jaina and Uther didn't have the info he had. I don't know what Uther's ascension has to do with my point.

    As far as i enjoyed whole story, i believe Arthas was evil not because he choose and enjoyed, but because he was weak. Because his prideful and easily manipulative nature he fall to plots of dreadlords and later blade's will. He nearly killed Muradin (we thought he died at that time) despite of his warnings about his path, change of character etc. And let's not forget because of his evil and sadistic actions (he was completely under control at that point) Ranger General Slyvanas was tortured instead of getting a swift death and became a banshee. But honestly he was easy to control because he "believed" that he was in control while in reality he reduced a mere puppet. That was Arthas Menethil a man who born as a prince, trained by best paladin named Uther for virtue and light art and one of the greatest combatant dwarf Muradin for his martial art and valor. Yet he fall like that. Meanwhile Bolvar donned helm of dominion and contained it's power and will and pissed of Jailer in progress.

    really as though bastion is the most beautiful zone in the entire shadowlands, i NEVER played kyrian... i hate them. they're supposed to symbolize angels but that "Path", even if changed in the flow of the story disgusted me so much, that i won't ever play them. even if I'll miss the mogg sets, mounts and achievements.. nope. i wont ever

    Arthas didn't do anything wrong. The purge of stratholme was the right thing to do but just harsh, he saved more lives. He lost his soul once he claimed frostmourne and then his body was a taken when he put on the helm of domination/ lich king helm.

    you talk too much during the video and you miss the dialogues, maybe it would be easier for you to understand if you made your comments at the end ...
