To be clear so the KZread comment section so you can get all this context Jay has been told that the story starts off really slow. Thats why he is dedicating a month so he can get through ARR and get into HW before he passes judgement on the game. So yeah there was very little story BUT Jay knew that this would be the case so atm its all gucchi.

It's really nice to see you play ffxiv and I can't wait to see your journey! Two small notes for you on things you mentioned: 1. When chat told you to watch the trailer they most likely meant "Flames of Truths" and "A Realm Reborn" as the 1.0 trailer, like you said, has no lore relevance. The other two detail the in game event/lore reason for 1.0 getting nuked with the fall of the red moon, Louisoix Leveilleur, and how the player ends up five years after the calamity. 2. You get access to the glamour system fairly early in game and that should solve your outfit issue somewhat. Most players you see in game don't actually have the armor you might think on them, instead using a reflected outfit pre-prepared in an inn-room with glamour crystals and collected gear to still look good without using bad stats.

Welcome to FF14! In case this wasn't mentioned before, regarding the HUD layout; as there are no (supported) mods, customizing the HUD is built right into the game so you can adjust how it appears and feels by yourself. Also, regarding mods....there's a big "don't talk about it" mentality when it comes to them. I use them personally, mostly for glamour reasons, but SQX has a very firm stance of not accepting them. So if you do end up using them, you can't use them while you stream or talk about them in-game.

I personally do not like to replay ARR for a good reason but it puts in SO MUCH groundwork for the rest of the entire story and it will keep coming back to it continuously. ARR is very slow and back and for before the payoff finally hits right at the end and you get catapulted into much more linear plots for the rest of the game that had me hooked. Sometimes a foundation isn't pretty to look at but if it's solid enough, it'll stand up for years to come. Which is pretty much the best way I can describe ARR and so far it absolutely has held up the rest of the story.

Welcome to FFXIV! I'm sure you've been warned plenty of times, but ARR is *dry*. Especially the patch content. Hopefully you stick with it long enough to experience Heavensward! Also, I'm a die-hard controller player, even though I play on PC. Nothing beats being able to kick your feet up with a controller to do some relaxing raiding or questing. I've got a couple of tips for new controller players in order of importance (if you ever plan to raid at least): 1. Swap the analogue trigger buttons with the shoulder buttons. This is to make the extended cross hot-bar easier to use as it's much easier to double tap the shoulder *buttons* than it is to double tap the *triggers* due to the triggers looong travel distance. Do this one early, cuz muscle memory is a pain to re-train (System Configuration -> Game-Pad Settings -> Button Configuration) Whilst you're here, feel free to adjust any of the buttons you want. I hated having jump on triangle, so I swapped square and triangle. You can also set up macros on your L3/R3 buttons, to map to actions like sprint. 2. Use "Legacy Type" movement settings, and DISABLE CAMERA PIVOT!!! Camera pivot is nauseating for me, and it was borderline unplayable until they added the camera pivot option to the base game. (Character configuration -> Control Settings -> General -> Movement Settings) 3. Under (System Configuration -> Game-Pad Settings), you'll see a "Stick Sensitivity" Option. This is *NOT* camera sensitivity, it controls the analog stick dead-zone. I keep it at around 10, but adjust for your controller. Changing camera sensitivity is under (Character configuration -> Control Settings -> General -> Camera Controls) 4. Keep your mouse and keyboard close by. You don't need it, but sometimes controlling the UI is just a bit easier with the mouse, and typing a quicker on keyboard.

A Realm Reborn is like the first book of a massive series, or the first season of a television show that's mapped out for 10 years of seasons. It's laying a lot of groundwork, but later on you'll be surprised when some inconsequential nobody from level 30 quest suddenly becomes enormously important or some throwaway line turns out to be a lynchpin to a major plot two expansions later. Yeah, it can be a bit slow in the early part - it was designed for people who have never played an MMO before to get used to how the genre works and they admit they did get a little cumbersome on some quest stuff. But I can promise you, by Endwalker - an expansion 10 years after launch - you'll have every single lore thread tied off. Even lore you've already engaged with and didn't realize it would be crucial to finalize the last epilogue of Endwalker. But honestly? I don't think ARR is a bad story at all. Part 1: Starting city introducing you to the world and a finale when you leave. Part 2: Introduction to the other cities (where you are now) Part 3: Introduction to the core story anchor and your purpose as the hero. Part 4: The mystery and villains Part 5: The reveal Part 6: The finale Part 6.x: The patches which are slow but doing world building for the next 2 expansions (yes, the next TWO are having elements set up during patches) Then you'll start Heavensward. But you're also nearing the first section where the story starts to establish the "big villains" of the overarching narrative and start to put the pieces on the board for what the threats you're going to be addressing in ARR and later. My friend started playing about 6 months ago and he's 4 levels from finishing Endwalker. He was digging it on his own pace and spent a lot of time doing side content like just dabbling in gathering and crafting and poking around at the Gold Saucer or whatever kind of made him curious but he was jiving with the story as he went along. Heavensward killed his momentum on anything other than the main story. Crafting fell off. Gathering fell off. He just went 100% full story mode from Heavensward all the way to Endwalker. Heavensward will lock in the FF feel with having a party, interacting with them, and able to go through dungeons with them using the Trust System (different name in earlier expansions, but still, you'll be able to run dungeons with NPCs who are party members and not just random assigned NPCs).

  • @Manae.L

Don't worry too much about appearances of armor. As soon as you finish the upcoming quests and unlock the world, so to speak, you can go do a very quick quest to unlock glamour. And the best part of that is you can go to your room in the inn to add existing armors to the dresser, then use those appearances to make Glamour Plates, and those Plates can be used completely freely to overwrite the look of whatever you are wearing (so long as it doesn't violate class/level restrictions).

I wouldn't worry too much about the look of armor you get from your class quests since later down the line they will give you some of the best looking armor with good stats that changes based on your class. For example, remember the Drachen armor from Monster Hunter World? Yeah, that is the class armor for Dragoon the upgrade to Lancer.

That should be every time, after that he's on his own. 2) I have appreciation for ARR, BUT because this game has such praise & hype which doesn't really SPARKLE until Heavensward, it is best to SQUASH and SIMMER any expectations for new people that way no one comes in like "I This game was suppose to blow me off my feet in less than an hour, I was lied to!" I have seen that happen too many times. ARR has failed so many Sprouts. In Fact I know of Sprouts who got half way through HW and just quit before the first BIG hook. At the same time I have seen Sprouts fall in love with the game as early as their first dungeon. So mileage varies, BUT the big take away is this; FF14 plays the Long Game. As others have said, ARR is truly an investment, loads of world building and set up that pays off massively in all the rest of the expansions. It's def a hard sell because of that since you just have to believe fans that the expansion stories make it worth it but for me, it ends up having easily the best MMO story ever and the arch is better than most single player games even, but I can't fault anyone that isn't down to gamble with the time investment either.

    1. I'm literally not sure why they had you watch that first trailer. I think that was for pre-ARR which was a disaster. 2. This is a Final Fantasy RPG. I was able to stick with this game because it is an MMO. I have issues getting through most FF games because they wait to divulge the plot/story until you are like 25-50% into the game. Waiting that long to know why I'm fighting or what I'm fighting for in a solo MMO isn't something I enjoy. Also, I played WoW and unless you play the Warcraft games the WoW plot is like a French citizen with a can of soup in the Louvre. 3. I'm glad your community left you alone for the most part. I feel most people in the FFXIV community tend to overly babysit streamers even if those streamers have done some of the hardest content in other games. There is some sort of idea in the FF community that if you play this game coming from other MMO"s, then you will not understand anything about it. I would say that was true in earlier expansions, but they have redone classes, dungeons, and other content which makes it much easier for people from other MMO's to just jump in.

  • @Infeston
    @Infeston4 ай бұрын

Hey Jay! I saw your video and wanted to tell you something which I already told another person who wants to start FF14. Don't overhype yourself with the story! I wanted to tell you to keep the expectations low (like you already said at the beginning of the video), because I have already seen other people get disappointed, because they expected too much of the FF14 story. If you expect the "best story written in any media" you will certainly set yourself up for disappointment. Don't get me wrong. The story is good and enjoyable. But the storytelling can be really sloggy, because of the reason it is an MMO. I just wanted to say that, because I have seen people start this game with too high expectations only to be letdown, because they compared this game to everything they ever experienced. The game is best enjoyed with an open mind and without comparing it to other games. I personally got the most of my enjoyment out of the story, the character customization (making my character look badass by collecting armor) and also some of the side content (Palace of the Dead, Eureka, Bozja, Heaven on High and Eureka Orthos [These names won't tell you anything yet]). I am mostly a solo player, who enjoys games at their own pace. I rarely participate in organized group play. But I think this is one of FF14 strenghts. You can play most of the game till the end solo and still get enjoyment out of it. But you can also play the game with friends if you want. For the story, expect the same quality of story and writing like the other FF games. I personally am a fan of FF7, FF8 and FF10 and I would say the story of FF14 is as good as the story of those games (if not even better). But I advise you to not overhype yourself with the story, because I have seen people go into the game having "too high" excpectations and then get disappointed. Sometimes the writing and the story can feel somewhat sluggish in the beginning. And a lot of it is "oldschool textbox reading" without voice acting or cutscenes, like in old FF games. But if you have no problem with "reading a lot" you will propably enjoy the story. I enjoyed every minute of this game, but I also don't want to overhype the game too much. Simply play the game "with an open mind" and let yourself be engulfed by the story and its characters. The gameplay can be somewhat easy for gaming veterans, but there are possibilities for hard content. But the hardest content is mostly group focussed. I am a more casual gamer who focusses mostly on solo or casual group content, where I don't have to commit to a schedule, so i can't tell you much about the harder group content. But the stuff I told you before (Palace of the Dead, Eureka, Bozja, Heaven on High and Eureka Orthos) also offers a challenge for solo players. So there is always something enjoyable for solo players. Overall I would say to keep your expectations "low" and let yourself be surprised by the game and its story. But I only say this, because people overhype this game sometimes too much. I personally loved the story and every minute of it. But I am also a big fan of world building and political conflict. And I like to read lorebooks for most of my games. It is a good story if you are open to "reading a lot" like in oldschool JRPGs.

Jay was supposed to watch the 1.0 and ARR trailer but Jay only watched the 1.0 trailer and the intro cinematic (the one which takes scenes from the 1.0 and ARR trailer and has Lousioux narrate) but Hey Jay is the one that skipped the ARR Cinematic

Dont worry man, it's kinda like your mh rise and mh world days. It takes a while but when it clicks, it clicks! It just might take a lil bit more time because unlike mhw who dumps you in the action immediately, ffxiv takes it time putting you in one because they wanted it to be a more forgiving start for new mmo players or people unfamiliar with final fantasy.

The sad truth is early game story isn't that good. But the devs learn to do better over time, so the story tends to get better as you go.

Yeah, I'm surprised people wanted you to watch the 1.0 trailer too. I don't think most current players has ever seen that trailer, because it has almost nothing to do with the game as it is now.

Yeah unfortunately ARR dedicates a LOT of time to fleshing out its world, sometimes to thet detriment of the gameplay! Just hang in there! Although if you get to the end of ARR and you still arent having fun, I kinda get it.

I'm sure you've heard, that FF14 is the best game that feels a lot like it doesn't want you to play it. The base game has been improved a lot, but its still rough. But don't worry. The game will blow you away if you give it a chance. All the comments ehre are right, you are in for a treat!

ARR is a lot of world building and the glam game is wack. But that is the price you pay for the real drip later.

I think Final Fantasy XIV has two problems at the start. 1. They're treating this as if it's a player's first MMO and they take a loooong time to teach people things. 2. The story is also very slow because they're doing worldbuilding instead of storytelling for a lot of it. This means that an MMO veteran will likely be bored by the first point AND the second point. If only one of these points were true, the early game would be a lot better.

I bounced off FF14 like 3 times, until 2 years ago I decided to play Guild Wars 2 and... well... let's just say I'm close to 2000 hours and I still love that game hahaha albeit, the story is not supposed to be anywhere near as good as the FF14 one, but I think the gameplay is much much better. Maybe you can try GW2 as a series at some point in the future? I definitely highly recommend it :)

I pushed myself to play through ARR into Heavensward last year, I wouldnt recommend it. Possibly the most overhyped game out there by its current playerbase. Theres so many better games out there to play, that dont take 100 hours to supposedly "get good".
