Although I watched Freddie hundreds of times on dirt, I’ve never once seen him race on asphalt! He was a master in a dirt late model for sure! Back in the NDRA days! An incident I’ll never forget from one Sunday afternoon in the 80’s at Concord Speedway, Freddie was leading when two cars had tangled halfway down the backstretch and wound up against the outside wall (guardrail?). The flag man evidently didn’t see them and no yellow was thrown. Freddie, in that great red Coors car, sailed by the wrecked cars for two laps, but the third time it was like he aimed for them, and he nailed those sitting cars at full throttle! The race was red flagged due to the massive destruction that had occurred, and when they finally got the remains of his race car back to the pits accompanied by a bloody faced Freddie, the flag man had come down for some reason and Freddie’s wife attacked the guy for not throwing the caution! She flew into him with the same intensity that her hubby had hit those stopped cars!

I got to watch Freddy and Sprague go at it during the final 30 or so laps of a Big 10 race one night from a distant third thinking the whole time i would wind up either 1st or 2nd. Every lap they had each other sideways from the tri oval the the funnel exit on to the front straight but this must have been before the night Freddy mentioned here, cuz Sprague wound up in the fence coming off the funnel with a couple to go and I tore the radiator out of mine when i caught his left rear qtr panel. Cant remember who drove the C&C Boiler sponsored car but I think he and Renfrow wound up 2nd and 3rd behind Query. And yea, Faggart was a dirty effer on the track but in the pits he was a meek lil wuss, all 140 lbs of him. Query on the other hand, he's a man's man. Freddy if you read this, glad to see you in good health and looking good ole man.

9:57 racin’ might be rubbin’ but it’s much more fun as a fan enjoying a Mark Martin or a Lake Speed making quick laps than watching stupid contact. There’s a difference between moving someone and wrecking things. You might get the trophy and the check by wrecking someone but you didn’t win.
