Evernham had an entire car ruled illegal AFTER passing post race inspection. They made a set of rules just for that car. Yunick was all over the place on the car. Junior liked to focus on the engine but had a few tricks elsewhere. Loved his special engine DW ran at the All-Star. @@Stewbob112 Ok. I can give a few examples at least. This was right before they switched to the spec car, so it may or may not apply now. I came from sprint car and midget racing (mostly) before this, where there's very few rules, so the cheating was pretty eye opening. The cheating, and grey area pushing, was very secretive within a team/shop, and even within each department, so there's a whole lot that I will never know. They used Hawkeye optical scanners to inspect the cars (the entire car's body was required to be a specific shape called the "gold plate" car ( kzread.info/dash/bejne/X6eJxM2CcdfHeM4.html ) but we were allowed a tolerance of 0.150", in or out, but you could get away with 0.200"). We would push those tolerances to either decrease drag (super speedway cars), or increase downforce (1.5 mile, short track, and road course cars). There was ways to trick the system though, including using different vinyl wraps. Different colors, and especially some florescent colors, would read slightly different to the scanner, so they would design the wraps to strategically trick the scanner into thinking various parts of the car was bigger or smaller. One trick we'd use for the low drag/low downforce super speedway cars was to position the braces that held the front fenders, in front of the front tires, so that the car would be a legal shape until after inspection. After it passed, you would intentionally turn the steering to full lock side-to-side as they pushed the car back to the garage, so that the tires would hit and bend those braces, which would suck in the corners of the fenders and give you a big aero drag advantage. A few times we built/setup the car so that the front end was low and soft in practice. The driver would be instructed to stab the brakes a few times so that the splitter would hit/grind on the track. That would scrape material off the bottom of the splitter and bend the whole nose bodywork of the car up, which would allow the car to be setup lower for the race. That would decrease drag while still allowing enough air to go under the splitter to give you enough downforce. Worked really well. We built a few cars that had a special front suspension where the front shocks/springs attached to the structure that held front bodywork and splitter. That way at speed with downforce, and when the car hit bumps, the suspension force would lift the splitter for downforce, while allowing the car to be low and suck down to the track. It would also not momentarily lose downforce like a typical car would when the car went over bumps. I'm not sure if this was really cheating, but probably a grey area. One thing I heard about teams doing, but I'm not sure if we ever did (I'm sure we did, I just wasn't privy to how), was find ways to make tire "bleeders", which is strictly forbidden in nascar, but in other types of racing it's legal and used a lot. A bleeder allows some air (or nitrogen) to slowly leak out of the tire as they heat up so that your pressure doesn't increase when you don't want it to. One way they'd do this would be to put a needle in the heel of a crew members shoe, so they could casually kick the sidewall of a tire with their heel and put a tiny hole in it. There's a lot more examples, but that's what I can remember now off the top of my head. Let me know if you have questions. I like talking about this stuff. I think the statute of limitations has passed, and every competitive team does this stuff anyway.

In Smokey Yunick's autobiography, he described a way he could cheat by swapping out cam shafts right under the nose of an inspector by having a parts cleaner tub sitting nearby. Smokey would have the hotter, illegal cam shaft already submerged in the parts cleaner tub ( the parts cleaner fluid was totally black from oil & carbon removed from parts ), and with the legal cam shaft in his hand that had just been inspected & passed, he would purposely get into an argument with the inspector, then "accidentally" drop the legal cam shaft into the tub, quickly reach in and grab the illegal cam, and say something like "you guys are a pain in the ass, now I have to re-lube this thing damn it" to help throw off the concentration of the inspector. He said it worked like a charm, lol. He also discovered that he could get better exhaust scavenging with a 1/8th inch hole drilled into each header tube about 8" below the header flange, on the underneath side. He would fill these holes with aluminum, which would melt away from the heat of the exhaust, exposing the holes which were hidden as described above. Of course Smokey and the rest of the teams for that matter, had countless ways of "cheating"........but that was just 2 that Smokey described in his book. Bud Moore once stated that it wasn't uncommon for Smokey to show up at a race having a 30 hp advantage over the best competition. When Bobby Unser had a car specially made to break the record at Pike's Peak, he requested that Smokey design & build the engine, which Smokey did. Bobby was damned proud of that engine, and often bragged about it's power.

Now NASCAR has the greatest potential to 'cheat', in other words favor any one team/driver/manufacturer they choose since the advent of electronic engine management. NASCAR assigns a box to each team at every race, pre-programmed to supposedly even the field, and while some variance for fine tuning is left available, the spark and fuel curves are governed by the primary 'flash' of the boxes memory. Just prior to, nearly every single engine modification/part was specified as to legality, so a power 'cheat' was already nearly impossible as compared to years gone by, but now NASCAR is the one under suspicion. NASCAR is now in a position to favor or hinder any given car (or car manufacturer) in a given race as pre-programmed ECM data is nearly unlimited, and with their history of manipulating rules and race outcomes for political and/or financial reasons, NASCAR now stands as the greatest potential cheater with NO governing association to answer to. Since the change to electronic engine management controlled by NASCAR, completely ungoverned by any higher authority to represent the racer, the races are now high speed parade laps around any given track.
