Feto-Placenta Circulation || Back to Basics || Dr. Shonali Chandra
In this video, we will answer how the fetus extracts oxygen from the maternal blood across the placental barrier. We will see how the fetal circulation is different from the adult circulation and how it changes soon after birth.

Fertilization
After birth, all changes are happening due to closure of fetoplacental circulation but what is it that is closing this placental circulation itself ??(how does placenta know that it needs to stop now)

Thank you for asking this question. The immediate closure of umbilical vessels after birth is mediated by smooth muscle contraction of the vessel walls, mediated by a combination of change in oxygen tension (brought about by breathing now) and mechanical stimuli (clamping of cord). The initial inflation and oxygenation of lungs also stimulates the release of bradykinin from the lungs, responsible for functional closure of the ductus arteriosus. Virtually instantaneously, the heart chambers then start to work in series, blood from RA reaches the RV and enters the pulmonary artery to lungs then back to LA. This increases the LA pressure, the RA pressure decreases (recall the decrease in pulmonary vascular resistance). This pressure difference causes the functional closure of the foramen ovale. For Ref. Langman's Embryology 14th ed page 238.
