Festo - BionicFlyingFox (English/Deutsch)

Ғылым және технология

Flying fox as inspiration: thanks to its intelligent kinematics, the BionicFlyFox can master the agile flying manoeuvres of its natural role model. In order to be able to move in a defined space semi-autonomously, it communicates constantly with a motion-tracking system.

    Great that you actually built it! It seems that it doesn't have enough power to gain altitude or sustain flight but with more power I believe it could. Despite needing significantly more stabilisation than a quadcopter, this might be even more efficient and less noisy!

  • @AviAero123

    @AviAero123

    5 жыл бұрын

    Your statement is self-conflicting, mate! While you suspect it needs more stabilization (means it needs more power thereby to stabilize), you say it could be more efficient than multirotors? While the fact is flapping wing flight beats rotary wing flight in every aspect, be it power, noise or efficiency. Its just that we need more such innovations to come up over time.

  • @noname-wo9yy

    @noname-wo9yy

    Wing flapping surely is no where near as efficient to a standard wing design.

  • @almostbutnotentirelyunreas166

    @almostbutnotentirelyunreas166

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@noname-wo9yy Do your research BEFORE commenting......and please compare the 'whole package' to the 'whole package'..... a 'standard design wing' on its own is a pretty useless item. Then also consider the 'design' parameters....load, airspeed, maneuverabilty, size (Reynolds number), .......flight presents an excellent opportunity to showcase the classic Engineer's Dilemma: You cannot optimize for everything.

  • @noname-wo9yy

    @noname-wo9yy

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@almostbutnotentirelyunreas166 Fine then, the flapping will cause terrible mechanical stress on the materials making up the joint, the whole flapping motion plus the gearing required for that introduces serious inefficiencies when under its own power and it would not scale well it you wanted a bigger one.

  • @almostbutnotentirelyunreas166

    @almostbutnotentirelyunreas166

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@noname-wo9yy The point is to try and replicate the efficiencies (of flapping wings) as found in nature.....it outstrips the most 'efficient' fixed wing (or rotating wing) assembly that engineers have ever designed... at least at speeds up to approx 250 km/h. Birds fly on next to nothing, compared to powered flight. It is the exact reason why the Wright brothers had such trouble staying airborne: POWER. Or, put differently: Lift inefficiency. So, me-thinks that you need to do some more research about 'flight efficiency' in general. Then come back, if you still believe you have point to make somehow, and impress us all!

    Looks like a bunch of moving parts. How long is the flight time?

    The mechanism on this is amazing, and the fact that it flies relatively well is even moreso....but I think the wing tips flex too much on the downstroke, resulting in a sort of 'floppy' flying quality (same as the Festo Smart bird)... the more realistic ornithopters I've seen have wings that flex on the upstroke and are strong on the downstroke with flex on the trailing edge of the wing... great work though... keep it up!!!
