German automation company "Festo" has been getting inspiration from an unlikely source: the animal kingdom. Since 2006, Festo has been building animal-like robots as part of its “Bionic Learning Network” so as to help researchers come up with more creative and efficient ways to improve manufacturing. Of these Festo bionic Robots in technology development, we organize episodes and in the first episode, seven of these bionic robots have been described. These are:
00:00 Introduction to the world's leading automation company

What we need are robotic bees capable of pollination of crops.

To my knowledge they are already using quadrocopters in some vertical farming facilities. But outdoor pollination is, of course another question.

Bionic means to have artificial body parts so robots are bionic sine they are artificial.

why do they all have cosmetic features to look like the animals they're based on? does the kangaroo really need a kangaroo head?

Bionic is a merging of biology and electronics. I see no biology here, only electronics.

@@fadedchicken The term "bionic" has been around since the "Six Million Dollar Man" program aired in the 1970s. It is abused more often than used in original context. The new popular buzzword is "cybernetic " or "cyborg " words are vauge

Robotics that are inspired by nature offer a lot of benefits than you would have imagined. Why do you think these animals have been evolving and survived for millions of years throughout the earth's treacherous environments? Because they are equipped with remarkable abilities that enables them to navigate the environments with ease. Be it under burrows or the deepest parts of the oceans or through tight and confined spaces or even soaring in the skies. Bionic robots are the new ways moving forward in the robotics industry.

Honestly, what is the point of robotic animals when the real animals that God has made are so much better?

  • @aahad9745

The point is so you don't have to train and send real animals to do dangerous work. Why use a quad-copter drone to survey a dangerous site of a radioactive leak or a disaster zone, when you could send in a bat shaped drone that is significantly smaller and lighter. Or would you prefer we use real fruit bat for that? Same for the swimming robots, which would be immensely helpful for rescuing divers trapped in caves or for exploring underwater ruins.
