After a 40 year hiatus, Fr. Richard made catholicism possible again.

Blind guides. At least evangelical Christianity had the right idea just that they were confused. The RC church threw out the bible 1700 years ago and then became a political organisation

God is love was not the God I was given. I'm 85 and Fr Rohr has brought love slowly back to me. Thank you.

Without question I admire the work that Father Rohr has done since I listened to his tapes back in '74. I've long lost any battle with any kind of moral high ground since I've deteriorated into solitude, poverty and despair. Some lives are just tragic with no silver lining no matter how much one wants to spiritualize it. As I reflect on my pathetic current condition, I'm painfully aware of the many years I used to be useful as I worked hard to raise three kids, run a successful business and devote myself to the church as I faithfully took action in my own small way by delivering meals to the shut ins in my parish for years. Those days are long gone as I've succumbed to my genes and the circumstances of my unwanted birth. All I've learned is that life is way more sloppy than U ever thought. Beyond his highly intellectualized theological sermons, I'm not sure that Richard has added much to the case for Christianity other than any other religions. After all the well meaning complex work that Fr. Rohr has done over the years, I hope he's still cognizant of the essence of the scant and few promises that Christ really proclaimed. He did not promise happiness and He certainly didn't promise an easy life or any kind of freedom from persecution, poverty or even mental illness. It's only been through my own failings that I have some realization that I need to just shut up and try and learn how to listen. I'm scared of Him just like His disciples were. I can understand why He was frustrated with stupidity like mine. This is why I go to His essence. He forgives me for my sins even while I keep on failing. I admit that I just can't understand much of what Richard has to say but I hope I can eventually utilize his wisdom.

yours is the most direct ,humbling comment i have ever read on KZread, without any " martyr or victim cop out " If you dare to say this with name & picture (I am not naive .One can fake anything and everything on KZread) You have my respect. whatever that is worth. I would not dare to."pollute" your honesty, with advice & cheerful/hopeful comments. For i know the taste of despair.

paul newsome i can relate to your story as I have suffered failings and tremendous loss. Rohr is one voice that has helped me make sense of my journey. Falling Upward spoke so succinctly to my circumstances and helped me see the gain that came through my loss. I also find Thomas Merton's writings to be of great solace. So humbled by life. Learning to embrace silence, but it is a hard work to go against everything that screams for attention.

Amen & hello Paul from Paul in Australia. As i read what you've written, i can say that i've travelled a very similar thought journey about Christ as you have. I find myself afraid of what i see Christ NOT doing in my case/life, and wonder if i will be found on the last day. I've raised 4 kids my wife died at 42yrs and from that day my faith and trust has been all but demolished. My family saved my life. My fear is such that i tolerate the world in bits, knowing that there are no certainties and many ready to surprise without good intentions!! I wish you well, & thank you for your candid exposure of your vulnerable inner self..I have however found a small men's group that i depend on & visit each fortnight. Paul, what a human and honest statement on life. forgive me if I sound like preaching. My life has mostly been one of good works. And I have developed an enormous ego. I have realised that now. My salvation or healing has been the realisation of the importance of the present moment.

You;re right Richard. All clerics should be hospice workers as part of their training - care of the terminally ill , dying - really getting into the 'silence' of 'washing feet'.

Agree. It's easy to think about it without actually practicing it. That is a whole new experience. It's a transformation of the heart that begins with surrender. I can find a million piddly silly things to do to divert me from contemplation. Then I ask, Why am I doing this? Why delay? Why put other things first? The answer is clear.

This is a blessing, that all these faiths come together. Silence is Golden, as is Father Rohr. It is a joy to see interfaith in action, thank you for this post of this compassion in action. Still, I feel the presence of the Christ within and affirm God's love for each one of us.

There are many levels of understanding and there is a great gap within the population in their level's of understanding as individuals. That is a problem in the world of humanity. Never heard of Fr. Rohr before. Stumbled into this, but am truly astounded by what he has to say. and I'm not even Christian. I do think it worth mentioning that he missed the mark on describing the Buddhist concept of emptiness. Glad I found Fr. Rohr.

Peter, this is not either, or. Richard Rhor is not diminishing the Holy Spirit's 'personhood'. We humans are persons and yet at our most basic level we are energy...a force field. Seeing the Holy Spirit as the energy connecting all things does not, in my view, diminishes, it expands.

Theologians use the word 'person' because they don't have any other word to use, so 'person' is a placeholder word. No one can say what the Holy Spirit is but the Holy Spirit.

I thought something similar actually.punctuating a lecture of that length with silence I thought might emphasize his message, yeah. I understand, lovingly so, respectfully so, he fully acknowledges he is a 1 on the Enneagram. 🐝

One huge error here. Young men forced into celibacy do not make paedophiles. They are messed up and the abuse of imposed celibacy can lead to other abuses. But they are not paedophiles because of celibacy.

23:30 he's dead on. He's talking about the thick American Media Bubble. I hardly watch news from the USA now as you'll lose complete awareness of what is really going on in the world. I recommend BBC, DW English live on KZread from German and France 24 English also live on KZread. CBC in Canada is also very good.

It is much more likely in the depth of silence to encounter an evil spirit. Yes we are to meditate but we are instructed to meditate on the scriptures and test the spirits by the Word of God. There will be many false prophets and many who come in the name of Jesus Christ. We have been warned so take heed.

Americans love to "talk about" silence.

His gospel is that of non dual consciousness not the finished work of Christ

I don't know what to think of this lecture. There is no doubt that we live in a very noisy world. A lot of the noise is a diversion from the spiritual values that are really important. But to even talk about silence you have to break the silence. Seens kind of self defeating to the whole arguement. I think that there has to be an argument for the value of balance. Silence is where we find meditation and contemplation. But to much of anything is an imbalance. We find God in Jesus Christ and we can't know God unless we speak of Him in audible expressions. The Gospel is preached to the world and that is not advanced without speaking to the world. Overall the lecture is philisphical and in that sense it puts an emphasis on somthing that we probably need more of. I am not a Roman Catholic nor am I a mysitc. But overall I find Rohr to be a bit to esoteric. Perhaps he is impalanced in his mysticism? But in reality is anyone really balanced?

"The Gospel being preached". There is a non-verbal way of preaching (through our actions) and there is a verbal way of "being silent" or, we can be talking from a place of "silence/still-ness".
