Ferro Concepts FCPC V5 Review

Our experience with the FCPC V5 - the good, the bad, and some modifications. Overall a great full-featured plate carrier.
Fun fact: when you say "Ferro Concepts FCPC V5 Plate Carrier" you're actually saying "Ferro Concepts Ferro Concepts Plate Carrier V5 Plate Carrier"

    4:50, I think they attached the velcro in the middle only because it allowed the stretchy fabric to stretch without ripping. By attaching the velcro all the way around to the stretchy material, the chances of it ripping are much higher because the nylon thread that the material is attached to, will not stretch with it. Instead, it will pull on it, creating more tension.

    The plate bag close is because when plates get heavy and are sitting in the bag for a while, the corner parts of the Velcro are the first to go, alleviating the corner Velcro’s and only having the middle, means your plates won’t sag and even in some instances fall out

    Oh I found out what the square piece is on the inside of the plate bag, its so that as the weight of the plate puts pressure on the flap it dont slowly undo the corners causing the flap to slowly work itself loose. the inside part that you thought was for the backer is to work as a suspension system for that little square.

  • @matthealey8

    Back when I got mine they didn't have those options but the "standard" is supposed to be normal length and the "optimized" is supposed to be for the mepc only. Even if I had a mepc I would still get the "standard" length because it makes the flap easier to peel up and secure the cummerbund. I don't like the webbing where the buckles/g-hooks go to be too short.

    I've got a standard Slickster. The mods you did make me wanna ask: ferro talks about their "laser cut" slots for the swift clips. Do you think I could cut my Slickster, and then burn those edges, and not have a fraying issue? I.e. if I wanted a PTT slot.

  • @matthealey8

    @matthealey8

    3 жыл бұрын

    The laser cut slots are truly very strong. I've torn standard MOLLE webbing before but never anything with laser cut slots. The cordura material itself, when the edges are burned, can definitely handle a PTT or whatever else you put on. I'd be a little concerned about cutting your own slots though. I'm not sure that a simple slit would suffice - I think you'd need to find some way to cut a really narrow oval with the ends rounded. It seems like all the manufacturers who use laser cut MOLLE use some way of rounding the corners to avoid causing a stress concentration at the ends where a tear could easily start. If you think you can find some way to round the ends with an exacto knife or whatever you're using, go for it. If you're planning to just cut a simple slit, I'd be a little concerned about that, but realistically it would probably still work. Just burn it very thoroughly when you're done. Good luck!

  • @Vinnytwotime

    @Vinnytwotime

    You can use a "hot knife." Think they sell them at Wal-Mart. That'll cut it, and also burn it at the same time. Just keep in mind, if you mess it up, you just messed up your $200 carrier.

    Hey man did you notice any balancing issues between the front and rear bag with the assault cummerbund before or after your mod to the shoulders? • @matthealey8

    @matthealey8

    With the assault cummerbund installed properly, the rear plate bag rides higher than the front plate bag. This is intentional, it gives proper vital coverage and aligns the plate with the curvature of your back better. If you don't like it you can play around with the mounting height of the cummerbund to see if you like it better another way. Is that what you mean by balancing?

  • @matthealey8

    Plate carrier sizes are based on whatever SAPI plate size is right for your body. The best way to figure this out is to measure nipple to nipple for width, and collarbone to belly button for height. That will give you the approximate plate size for your body. Then, you buy a plate carrier that is the same size as your plates (a medium plate carrier takes medium SAPI plates). Even if you aren't going to run real armor, this is still the best way to size the plate carrier. It's impossible to say without knowing your measurements, but I'm guessing at 5'2" and 11 years old a medium carrier will be too big for you. You could get one anyways and wait to grow into it, or you could look at something smaller. I think the 8"x10" size of the Defense Mechanisms MEPC might be right for you, but I would encourage you to measure yourself and then look at a table to see your actual plate size. Defense Mechanisms MEPC: defensemechanisms.com/mission-essential-plate-carrier/ SAPI plate size table: jerkingthetrigger.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/platesizes.png Let me know if you have any other questions! I used to be really into airsoft, it's a lot of fun. Having good quality gear is always helpful.

    @@matthealey8 im choosing between plate ca and chest rig what are the pros/cons of each?

  • @matthealey8

    @matthealey8

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@scrappyairsoft5852 The only reason to go with a plate carrier is if you need/want to have body armor. If you don't need/want armor then a plate carrier doesn't really offer any advantages over a chest rig. Certain specialized plate carriers like the Crye AVS can help you carry more weight, but that only becomes important if you're carrying around 30+ pounds of gear. For a 5-10lb airsoft setup with no armor and minimal gear, a chest rig is definitely the way to go. It will be lighter, cheaper, and it doesn't cover as much of your body so you won't heat up as much from wearing it. In my opinion the best chest rigs on the market right now are the newer style that use elastic cummerbunds instead of 1 inch straps, such as the T-Rex Arms Ready Rig and the Defense Mechanisms Load Carrying Platform. The Crye Airlite chest rig is also excellent. The Spiritus Systems and Ferro Concepts chest rigs aren't as good but they are still decent, and they will work great for a lightweight airsoft setup. Before you get too deep into looking at gear/chest rigs/plate carriers, consider what exactly you will need to carry around. If you're playing short matches at a local field, you probably only need a couple spare mags for your primary, one or two spares for your secondary (if you even run one), and really not much else. Maybe a flashlight, multitool, and first aid kit. You might be able to get away with just running a belt with mag pouches on it. It's tempting to get a big chest rig or plate carrier and carry as much stuff as possible, but trust me, the less gear you can get away with carrying, the better. It will keep you lighter, more mobile, and way more comfortable. Not to mention if you only have to buy a few things it will be a lot cheaper.

I wouldn't trust my life to it, but for airsoft it should be just fine. It's based on a very good design. Any particular reason you'll be running a backpack? The only time I did that in airsoft was when I was at a 12 hour long game and I needed to carry lots of extra bb's and green gas. For normal games that were an hour or less I never needed one. If you're carrying a backpack just because you want to, that's fine, I'm just curious if there's a practical reason for it.
