FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF - John Hughes Revisited

Welcome to John Hughes Revisited, where we take a look back at the works of the undisputed king of the teenage-angst genre. This week, we’re kicking off the series with one of the most beloved John Hughes movies, FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF - the pinnacle of teen comedies. A massive success when it premiered in 1986, its empowering message of friendship and self-worth still resonates now, on the 35th anniversary of its release!
In this video, we’ll dive into the production itself, the casting of Matthew Broderick, Alan Ruck, Mia Sara & Jeffrey Jones, and how the film was Hughes' love letter to the city of Chicago. We'll look into what makes Ferris Bueller tick, its lasting legacy, and even a bizarre 90s television show adaptation of the film. So take a sick day and relax while you revisit one of the greatest 80s films of all time.

He gets away with it though, not least because he puts in a superbly convincing performance as an angst ridden, dysfunctional teenager struggling to assert himself. On a tangentially related note the title for most unconvincing teenage character played by a much older actor in cinema surely remains with _33 year old_ Stockard Channing in _Grease_ trying to pass for 16!

As a kid growing up for me, Ferris Bueller was the definition of the sly, charming cool guy you wanted to be growing up. Broderick delivered it so well. While Hughes wrote him perfectly. Truly understanding and encapsulating the life of a teen. And still does. There's also no greater reflection of the youthful, carefree teenager spirit than Ferris.

How in the world could John Hughes know how to impact 'England'? Hughes smashed English humour again and again. The Breakfast Club. Weird Science. Planes, Trains and Automobiles. John Hughes hit England between the eyes. He floored us, and gave us impossible freeform joy. Maybe, as an Englishman, I didn't fully understand 'America,' but I did fully understand wild, up-to-the-minute, directly-engaging humour. John Hughes remains forever young. Thank you, John, for being my crazy cool American friend. A special thank-you must also go to Mr Broderick.

As a Chicago native, senior in 1986 and resident of the area where most of it is set…the biggest problem with the film overall is that most of the things they did during their day of “hookie” would have had to be done simultaneously. The Cubs Game would have been at noon and ended around 3PM which means the only other things they could have done was go to the Art Institute, Sears Tower or The Mercantile Exchange in the morning…no lunch unless the game was omitted….and do all before 2PM…the baseball game really needed to be eliminated, to make any of it possible. The Von Steuben Day Parade also occurs in September not late in the school year…and is always on Saturday…not a school day. My classmate from 1986 actually played the girl on the payphone with Ferris…it was originally intended for Kristi Swanson who was later inserted as Simone Adamly in the economics class.

We didn’t go to bed all night we decided to go to the movies the next day. How could you miss one of the most fascinating results of the production? Cindy Pickett played Ferris' mom and Lyman Ward played Ferris's dad. They married in real life after performing together in this movie. Unfortunately, it didn't last and they divorced in 1992. I remember two dates; 1986, when the movie was released, and 1992 when the "parents" divorced, because my wife and I got married in 1986 and our first child was born in 1992.

OMG! I remember the TV version. Maybe, I even saw the "kiss the sister" episode. Anybody remember the "Island of the Golden Monkey" spinoff from Indiana Jone's? It was on for one season. They had it all! A seaplane. A dog with a spot on his eye. A saloon, primitives, hot chick, amigos, pirates and promises of riches. Probably quicksand too! Even the music aped Indiana Jones.

"Bring 'em back alive" was the best, starring Bruce Boxleightner as Frank Buck(an actual person), who had jungle adventures capturing wild animals, but having plots with bad guys and quests....Also remember a pilot shown for a parody of Indiana Jones called "Callahan." His weapon was bolos....only one episode aired.

There is a scene where an actor who looks like Anthony Michael Hall is walking down the hallway in the school (possibly when the student approaches Jeanie). Seeing that this movie is set at the same high school as The Breakfast Club, I like to imagine that this is Brian from The Breakfast Club and that Ferris and Cameron are in some of the same classes as The Breakfast Club gang. It’s mostly unlikely that it was Anthony Michael Hall but it’s a nice fantasy. Ferris would be the King Bee of the school whereas Claire from The Breakfast Club would be the Queen Bee.
