@@iain_tyrrell I wouldn't say thing go slowly! You put out a video per week. That is, in itself, an indicator of how hard you work on them, once you factor in getting the people involved and how you want to present the information and then editing to suit. I think your camera work is excellent and the audio is every bit as good. There are lots of other, lesser channels with lower production standards.

It's hard to believe in this day and age, or even in the late 80s, that they can't make a material that is flexible but will not become porous and leak petrol. Great video as usual on my all time favourite car. I've had a model one sitting on a shelf for about 35 years now, sadly as close as I'm likely to get.

With regard to 'relatively modern' sagging headliners - it's not so much the failure of the glue but the serious degradation of the foam backing which effectively turns the foam into a 'pile of dust like particles'. The installation of a 'better quality' foam backing - if it exists - will help the situation.

Bag tanks are one of the things that makes keeping a McLaren F1 on the road difficult. One of the thing Gordon Murray did in the new T50 is to put in an ordinary tank, to make them simpler to drive. Same with the tyres - standard sizes instead of the F1's odd size.

Hi Iain. I must admit the F40 is my ultimate dream car so any video that features one is a must watch. I have definitely learnt a lot more about F40's just by watching your series of videos on the restoration of this car. I can still remember the day when I first laid eyes on one and it so happened to be parked next to my old Holden Commodore worth probably a couple of grand at that time. The F40 in question was painted yellow and in right hand drive. From what I can work out it was once owned by the Sultan of Brunei and it is one of only 7 converted by Pininfarina. In regards to the headlining failing, it is a common problem on late model Holden Commodores and Ford Falcons. Apparently the foam disintegrates due to our hot sun and the headlining then becomes an upside down parachute. Motor trimmers here are very proficient of replacing them, they just replace the foam and lining as one. My Holden ute's lining is held up in a similar fashion as this F40, just a few screws with the sunvisors and slips under the B pillar plastic trim. I guess if it is good enough for an F40, it is good enough for a ute.

What happened in my seats (and I've seen in other F40s) was the adhesive degraded and became black. The seats looked dirty but they were clean on the surface. It was the darkened adhesive that created the problem and the material sagged. I had mine redone, and they looked brand new. Love these seats. Thank you for explaining the cooling and turbo systems. Thank you for the walk-through and the detailed explanations! If by chance you don't have time to test drive that and you need somebody I will PM you 😁 I heard somewhere just the other day what a huge percentage of these cars (F40) are hardly driven. And I guess this one at 20,000 km for its age is no exception I was watching some Ferrari shop on KZread in the San Francisco Bay Area the other day and he had one of these in his shop and it had not been driven in 14 years. Just sat in the garage And he was detailing all the things he had to do just because the thing was just sitting Of course with the cost of repairs and maintenance I can see why they are sparingly driven I had an encounter with one of these on our local freeway years ago I am looking in my rearview mirror and the profile is mysterious to me. I couldn't figure out what it was and then of course I saw the little yellow rectangular emblem on the front so I knew it was a Ferrari And he passed me slowly in the next lane and that engine sound was...bellissimo! Thank you again and I want you to know I've learned a lot from you watching your channel I was taking an old friend of mine - a long time Mercedes-Benz shop owner to lunch yesterday - and I was telling a little bit of the historical importance of the 70s era Porsche Carrera I still find it fascinating that all of the manufacturing processes today on aluminum engine blocks all stem from Porsche's need to expand their displacement and they didn't have room to do it conventionally and how the Mahle distributor suggested coating the cylinder walls with this process they used for an NSU wankel part All learned from Professor Tyrrell!

Love seeing all the bits and bobs as you say. I never knew the headliner color in a F40. Always thought it was the color of the seats or dash. I have had the pleasure of seeing a few in person even on the road, just never noticed. Granted you have to really get down and look into the see the headliner when I'm focused on the seats and the shifter. My favorite F40 sighting was driving into an Indy F1 on Friday practice day. We were following a 360 Stradale proudly singing the song of his people, holding gears and giving it the boot between the red lights when a F40 popped up beside him. The 360 calmed down quite a bit. The 360 did sound quite nice but the situation was rather amusing. If you get the chance, I'd love to hear more on the history of F40 LM upgrades. You do a great job of covering all the interesting details. US DOT is weird, late to radial tires, and headlight upgrades but we get ugly 5mph bumpers. I have no logical explanation. C5, C6 and C7 Corvettes did get saddle tanks made from a rubberish plastic material but not nearly as flexible as the F40 tanks.

I remember seeing a new one of these parked up in a chic area of Munich in the 80’s and noting how crudely some parts were finished. It’s clearly a purposeful functional design with no “frilly’ bits. Of course there was a large crowd round it. Thanks for another great video - keep ‘em coming.

I love Iain’s enthusiasm and am in awe of his detailed knowledge. I’ve been around cars for over 50 years and know enough to know that he knows what he’s talking about. It’s also funny that the famous Ferrari’s headliner was put in crooked…..

Originally supposed to be 400 sold. Factory had so many orders that was expanded to 800 and then 1200 and sold 1311 if that is correct.

Not only is a pleasure to get to watch you and your workshop work on cars like this, but you also have the ability to explain all of the inner workings of each different make and model. Even dummies, like me, can sort of understand some of it 😉😂 Looking forward to seeing it out on the roads....I hope 😉

Thank you for another fascinating chapter of exotic cars. I couldn't ignore the large dark saloon close to you as you spoke. Without ore-empting anything, may we be seeing more of the Jaguar Mk VI or VII? I'm a lad of its time; few cars have ever had the presence of that model.
