Ferrari 458 dash board menu button controls - for Bill

This is a video I made for my friend Bill, showing how some of the controls on the Ferrari 458 work. I'll leave it public in case anyone else might find it useful or get a kick out of it.
The menu system is pretty good overall. The radio & media stuff can be a bit confusing, but after a while you start to get the hang of it.

Hysterical! The first week I had my 458 Spider I struggled the exact same way, especially with the right TFT screen. I was laughing out loud, and my name is Bill!! Well done.

Perfect. I couldn’t bring myself to read the manual on this already confusing interface. Lol, I love your advice - don’t ever turn on the wipers dude cause you’ll never be able to turn them off! After watching the crazy interface for the radio I’m thinking the same applies - don’t ever turn on the radio dude cause you’ll drive off a cliff navigating thru endless screens. Naturally aspirated V8 is the entertainment system in the 458! Cheers-

Ted Shirai the 458 is an amazing car - congrats! Helps to read the manual cover to cover about 3 times. And think of the gear box as a manual transmission not auto. The paddles shift and the car's ECU handles the clutch for you - otherwise, drive it just like a manual. Auto mode is a waste

I've since sold the car. But on the windshield wiper, the trick is to watch the left screen while working them, and there is a little icon which shows where you are at in the sequence. Then it will start making since.

Hey thanks! Yeah, the 458 is a lot of fun; I'll have some more videos of it coming soon. I'm about to rip the dash out and recover it with Alcantara haha. On the R1, I buy almost all the titanium hardware from Pro Bolt. They have both a UK and US website - either works. They aren't cheap, but in my experience, their quality is head and shoulders above anything else you can find. I've tried several other suppliers, but had bad rather poor experiences. Pro Bolt is what you are looking for as far as the best quality titanium stuff.

Yeah, that's exactly how it is all right. At first, it's tricky, but then after a while you start to get used to it. Never a dull moment with the menu systems on some of these cars nowadays right? :-)

Hi I've wanted to ask you a ? For some time know, but comments are always blocked and couldn't figure out how to msg you...I was wondering how did you wire up the speedo heeler on R1 with the relay/horn button.I thought that was great and want to do it on my R1....I appreciated any help Thank you.

Hey GFYS - It's been a while, but as I remember, I wired the power leads that used to go to the horn to a small relay from radio shack and then that relay acts as the push button control for the speedohealer. I actually was just cleaning the garage the other day (to make room for the 458) and ran across the spare relay I bought when I did that job. Hang on a minute and I'll make ya a video showing which one I used.

  • @ray5961

I personally do not use the PS button. It's rather hard on the gear box (which I believe costs north of $35,000 to replace out of warranty). If you feel the need to drag race the 458, it might come in handy, but myself I usually leave signals fairly gently and then get into the power once the car is moving. That really cuts down on things in the drivetrain snapping or breaking. I replaced 3 snapped pressure plate rings one summer when I was young (by chirping 2nd gear) and that was enough for me. Since then I've tried to enjoy my cars without abusing them. My advice is do not use the PS button :-)

Jersey Jeff also, be sure to read the owners manual. I read the owners manual cover to cover 3 times before ever driving the car. There is a lot to know / understand about the car and how to drive it correctly.

Why does it do the beeping noise like that right when you turn the car on? my Dad bought one and told me to figure out how to turn it off.

  • @ray5961

    @ray5961

Try connecting your seat belt before your power up the car. I don't remember for sure, but that might cut out a few of the initial beeps. You may also be able to turn down the volume using the settings in the menu, but as I remember it doesn't affect every beep, only some. Some of the controls are a little screwy, but after a while you just get used to it. You and your father might want to also read the owner's manual. It can be found in PDF on line also. Before I ever drove my 458, I read the owner's manual cover to cover twice and then read it a 3rd time (again, every single page) after i had the car for a few days. There is a lot of info in the manual and it pays to be familiar with it. Now and then the car and flash codes that look alarming, but usually aren't (and which can usually be cleared by powering the car on/off, etc.). Anyway, congrats on the car! The 458 Italia is arguably the best car Ferrari has ever produced.

Ray. How in the heck do you get the actual odometer to show. I can only see the trip and I see it is same way in your video.... Any ideas? Driving me nuts.

Rearden Metal it's been a while, but I think it's the center round button between all the arrows on the left side menu control pad. If I recall correctly, pushing that quickly will cycle through the odometer and the trip meter, while holding it down will reset the trip ones.

Nero Lowell It's very true. You'll go a long way before finding an exotic car owner who has bothered to read the owner's manual from cover to cover. I used to have a friend who had a Mercedes AMG and he didn't know how to operate anything on the car other than the power windows. With my 458, I read the owner's manual in PDF cover to cover twice before ever turning the ignition on. Then after driving it for a month, I re-read it cover to cover (all 200+ pages) a 3rd time. The 458 is a masterpiece - it's like a Unix server with 600HP and wheels; but yeah, it's crazy that so many owner's have no clue how to navigate the electronics, etc. and/or never read the manual when operating such a complex car as the 458.
