Fernwood 2Night Electric Car
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
The clip (which runs 3:40) has host Barth Gimble (Martin Mull) and his fractious sidekick Jerry Hubbard (Fred Willard) welcoming Fernwoods local gas station owner Virgil Simms (played by a very young Jim Varney, of the Ernest movies). Virgil has invented an electric car, which seems to be based on an orange Volkswagen Fastback from 1971-73.
Once the battery is revealed-actually about 4,000 of them, seemingly D-cells-we couldnt help but think of the Tesla battery pack, with its 6,871 lithium-ion cells.

Thank you Martin Mull, Fred Willard & Jim Varney for all your comedy. You are missed and will be fondly remembered

Yeah but Tesla is no Sucker. No indeedy.
Amazing. Teslas do have 4400 individual cells. Fernwood wa 40+ years ahead of its time
three comedy legends sharing the stage, incredible.

A great surprise to see some early Jim Varney. The three of them are having a great time doing the bit. They work well together. We were so lucky to have all this in our lives.
This reminds me how much I miss the comedy of Jim Varney.

Ditto.
This is one of the shows… Probably the main show that really taught me -as a young teenager -about satire. You had people like Martin Mull. Fred Willard, Harry Shearer, and here we have Jim Varney ..it all helped contribute to my sense of humor. Which, not surprisingly, has got me into trouble on countless occasions. Not because I’m a mean person, but because I learned advanced satirical humor from the masters. And I tend to overestimate people. And these days, people really are that wacky. If you were young, and found this by accident… Please just watch more of it. You’ll thank me. And RIP, Fred, and Martin.😊
This show was way ahead of its time, there was almost nothing like it on TV at that time. Long live Happy Kyne and his orchestra!

And Dabney Coleman as Mayor Merle Jeeter!
Good God! I didn't recognize Jim Varney till about 2 minutes into the video. Man what a comedian... He's been gone quite a while now, and Martin Mull as just left us too... time flies and I don't think I like it too much.

Same here. Time flew Fred Willard away about 4 years ago. I was pretty pissed at it then too.
Martin Mull's improv skills and zingers were top-notch.

I remember pissing off my dad when I was a teen, talking him into checking out Fernwood 2Night (I think it was midnight TV at the time), and the night he decided to give it a see, was this episode. A week later he called and cussed me out because he wasn't getting enough sleep, now hooked on the show.

Fred Willard cracks me up!
Just wanted to pass along something about "Virgil Simms" 0:16 Jim Varney; He'd show up at Children's Hospitals, no Press, no fee. Jim would entertain the sick or injured children for more than an hour. Just being silly and very funny. Real good guy.
RIP TO THREE GREAT MARTY FRED AND JIM VARNEY AKA ERNEST
Fare thee well, Mr. Mull.
My Dad remembers this show. He liked it.
Let’s remember the Tesla S has more than 7,000 Li cells.
I've always remembered this bit.
Never saw this one .., “about 4,000” … great comedy.
Is there NOTHING in today's world not anticipated by Fernwood 2Night?!?
God, that show was entertaining!
Way ahead of it's time. Today's EV's could have 4,000 batteries.
Long live Jim Varney!
IT'S ERNEST P WORRELL! I met him in 1985.
It’s hilarious that that’s what modern battery packs look like.
Jim Varney FTFW! What a cutie!
All three are now gone, sad. 😞
I thought that was Jim Varney. I used to see him doing local commercials when I was going to Engineering College in Flint Mi. during the early to mid 80's.

He was a spokesperson for MichCon (Michigan Consolidated Gas Company) before the Ernest Goes to Camp movies
So so funny....thanks
Fernwood 2 Night with Martin Mull!
All the people I used to laugh at when I was a smart ass kid are going on to the Great Beyond, just not in Virgil's battery powered car. RIP 3 great ones.
Reminds me of the Julia Louis-Dreyfus SNL pre-recorded commercial for an all-electric car.
100 views and 14 comments in 14 years. Glad it is here.
"It might need gas." LOL
Varney imagined himself a handsome Shakespearean thespian. Instead he became the archetypal hick.
🤣That's a LOTTA batteries!
The irony here, is this is what, generally speaking, happened to the Chevy Bolt. It has been in recall over battery issues ever since it rolled off the assembly line.
@KaptKan1 Good one!
This was the first Tesla. hahahahahahaha
I never knew Elon Musk was on Fernwood Tonight!
Martin Mull says about the electric car: "It might need gas" and there wouldn't be an ICE to turn over 🤣😂
Elon gives a big 👍
Its a Volkswagen, that's hilarious, Mull was forward thinking on this one, A "Sucker" that says it all, and what about all those batteries, Maybe Mull invented the first EV. lol
A vast improvement over the Volkswagen 1600 Fastback. Imagine how much better it would be with current rechargeable D cells!
Birth of the Chevy Volt. Just as dependable too.
Is that an old SAAB?

It's a Volkswagen Fastback
😂😂😂
2024 - they're actually series about this stuff. With similar results.
@Sobernic1982 Never mind him.Vanna White is much sexier and way cuter.
That electric car sounds like it has a gasoline engine. Martin even mention it may be out of gas. I think that goober may be a fraud.
Elon musk, before he decided to hire engineers.
Eat your heart out, Musk...
Mull has been spotty in career .. on and off again in TV series -- just the bus I guess because he is excellent. Willard in this series was just starting to get in his groove ... this show was great when it aired. Unfortunately it followed that horrible Mary Hartman show...
