Martin Mull and Flo & Eddie - Soundstage (April 24, 1976)

Ойын-сауық

AKA "Sixty Minutes to Kill." Thanks, KZread (and Perry Amberson) for giving me back this piece of my youth! I still have an audio cassette I recorded of this show in 1977. Then, I was just a Martin Mull fan, but now I like Flo & Eddie, too!

In the late 1970s, I was a student at Drew University. Imagine everyone's shock when Flo and Eddie waltzed into the cafeteria one lunchtime. They did a mini concert, including "Kama Sutra Time." In the cafeteria. At a school with a seminary. It was the most surreal experience of my life. Of course the room went wild!

I was there! About the funniest night of my life. I went for Mull but Flo & Eddie stole the show with their Joni Mitchell -Led Zeppelin medley. I’ve been looking for this for years. Holy crap, that’s me at 9:05 standing up behind Wolfman, er, Mailman Jack.

I attended a Soundstage downbeat jazz show in Chicago in 1976 and remember they taped *all afternoon* and there were several wonderful songs that didn't make it on the show. So my question is -- do you recall anything from that day that isn't in this broadcast? I'd love to hear any anecdotes. This is one of my very favorite shows and that's amazing that you were there.

I saw this (only once) on PBS Channel 12 (WYES) out of New Orleans as a kid and have sarched for it ever since! Couldn't remember the name of the show, only that it featured Flo & Eddie! I totally forgot that it was my introduction to Martin Mull, too! For years I tried to recall where I had seen the Sweet Steaks" Lucky Charms parody. In my mind, and perhaps it was later edited out, but I'd remember a huge "SPLAT!" sound (that sounded more like a shart) when the kid flattened the mascot. Thanks so much for posting such a a great memory of youth, and such a clear copy, too! RIP Martin, you were loved and adored!

My first Flo & Eddie experience was when they opened for David Ziggy Stardust Bowie at Winterland (San Francisco) in 1972. It was a Halloween weekend concert, and Bowie was not well known then. I was there to see Flo & Eddie - I had seen them with The Mothers before. By the time I left, part way through Bowie's show there were maybe 200 people there - in a hall that holds many thousands. He was pissed off!

Sad news, his passing. I actually played (trombone) behind him, in Harrah's Tahoe orchestra in maybe the early '80s. Martin was opening act for some headliner. He had the same homey little set around him on stage, a small table w/ a shaded lamp, and an easy chair, like he was at home in his study. On the table were a few magazines. Ted Kennedy was pondering running for President in those days, so I brought in an old issue of Reader's Digest with a cover story about the Chappaquiddick incident. A few minutes before curtain up I handed the magazine to Martin, who was tuning his guitar, and asked him if he'd heard what Kennedy had responded when asked if he would seek the nomination. He hadn't heard. "I'll drive off that bridge when I come to it." Martin chuckled warmly, thanked me, and placed the Digest on his little table. He was a sweet guy.

So I'm watching this movie called Late Night with the Devil and at the end I hear this old song that caught my ear. So since it's 2024 and I have a cell phone I do what any modern American would, I Shazam it. The song was Keep it Warm by Flo and Eddie. So you can imagine the rabbit hole I've found myself in! And what makes this whole thing even stranger than it already is, as I'm Googling all these names I find out that Martin Mull "was" an American comic actor? Why am I just finding this out on July 13? But wow, I've already invested about 3 hours finding out that MM passed and The Turtles are also Flo and Eddie, and Greg Hawkes from the Cars played with MM, next I'm gonna watch a documentary about F & E. Also, it's nice to go through a comment section that is full of trolls, smart ass kids, or some other degenerate, everyone here seems pretty cool! Like a gathering of kindred spirits or something. Living in the time that we are it's nice to escape for awhile!

I have searched FOR YEARS for the fake cereal commercial that appears at the beginning of this show. Somehow in the weird world of the internet, I found it today by accident. I thought it had to be from early SNL, but I was floored to find it here when I went poking around for a little fun time with Flo and Eddie. My memory of it was a bit off on some of the details, but I remembered the Troll of the Bowl and the "sugar-coated, sugar fortified little bits of sugar" line. The entire show surrounding the cereal commercial had dissolved in my memory, but I clearly remembered the kid flattening the troll on the breakfast table. Mystery solved, thanks to Flo & Eddie!
