Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Fermented feed is well known in the poultry industry as a feed beneficial to all types of poultry. In this video I discuss the benefits of feeding fermented feed to your coturnix quail and how to ferment crumbles as a healthy alternative to dry food for your quail.

For my chicks I soak a half pint jar of feed with as much water as it will hold then I put black soldier fly eggs on top and cover it with a coffee filter. A few days later the larva will have eaten a lot of the crumble and will be pretty good size. The chicks will eat it all. :) they love the grubs.

Thank you, I appreciate it. Flies aren't really an issue for me, I clean my trays often and spray them down with a Pine-sol solution that deters flies. I also have good air circulation in the shop so most of the manure dries out pretty quick and doesn't smell. I did install a screen door on the back door of the shop and it keeps out any stray flies. I also have fly strips at each end of the shop to catch any flies that might get in.

The Asians use the rinse water from washing their rice for making fermented veggies. The rinse water is loaded with the lactobacillus needed for fermentation. You could also use a spoonful of yogurt with live cultures. I've used rice water as a culture to inoculate my fermented mustard greens which I love dearly. It should work very well for making fermented crumbles.

  • @Rattlerjake1

Bokashi is designed to "compost" food waste into a soil amendment - it aids in "rotting" the waste. It is done by not allowing oxygen (anaerobic bacteria). Feed fermenting, on the other hand, required air circulation (aerobic bacteria) and doesn't "rot" the feed, it improves it's edibility/digestibility.

I turn the feed daily so no problems with mold. Most of the time the feed is covered with water and deters any mold growth.

Would ACV work in the water vs adding it to the feed? Would the benefits be the same?

You can add it to the water for sure, but adding it to the feed gives far more probiotics as the feed ferments vs just putting it in water.

I can't think of any, but there really is no need to unless you're looking to get rid of some starter :) Good luck!

Terry, I read back on the comments so I wouldn't ask a duplicate question. I saw you stir your fermenting feed daily. Do you also add more water? It seems like a law of physics is being bent when you end up with so much more feed with fermenting, and only adding the original amount of water.

P.S. Thank you, thank you for your great vlog posts. Between you and Myshire and Chris at Sl. Rednecked, I have incubated twice and my hatch rate has gone up! I had never hatched anything before, besides a dastardly plot😉.

Yes, I do add about a cup or so a day to keep the consistency that I showed in the video, with exception of the last day of fermentation. My birds like it a little drier, so the day I start feeding the new batch I don't add any water, just stir and feed. Good question!
