I ferment the grains, seeds, and legumes we give our chickens as well. I also use 3 buckets because the 3rd day seems to be their sweet spot 😊. I don’t put holes in the buckets to drain the water and run new water through daily, though. That is usually done when trying to sprout the feed, which is also good for the chickens. I keep the same water in the bucket the whole time and make sure to stir the feed a couple times per day. It will start fermenting on the second day - you’ll see bubbles. By the 3rd day, there will be a slight yeasty smell. Absolute yum for the chooks! I use a kitty litter scoop that I found at a store with homes versus slits to strain their feed as I give it to them. The leftover fermented liquid has probiotics too so I offer it free choice in a bowl near their water. The flock ALWAYS drinks the fermented water until it is gone before drinking their regular water. When I used to feed the same feed dry and unfermented, there seemed to be a lot of waste. Since I began fermenting, every single seed gets eaten. No more stragglers to the run. The girls (and boys) are waiting excitedly for me and I am easily able to lock them up for the night while they eat the evening meal. I also feed 1/2 the amount I used to because it expands so much, is so much easier to digest, and has many more nutrients bioavailable now. (Sorry for the long post) PS I love your videos!

Thanks Shawn for the chicken feed idea. I am north of you a few hours and have a secure coop and small run for the chickens as predators are common. When I lived in Southern Ontario, I could pasture my hens on my farm but not here. I get a chuckle out of Callie's role as "supervisor". My dog has much the same role at my place...he supervises all that I do on a daily basis and provides homestead protection on the side.

My dad would always plant buckwheat on new fields, then plow it under. It chokes out unwanted plants, and when you plow it under, it builds the soil.

use the old seed water on the garden ... it is LOADED with good stuff for the garden .... sugars minerals etc ... heck move it to a barrel with willow shoots and small new growth branches ... and you have a barrel full of natural rooting compound ... malting grains without wanting to brew them ... heck even a bucket of brew would be nice for the holidays ;) another good mating method to get better seed reliability ... a porous clay pot buried in the ground filled with the grain to the top and let sit over winter ... the top few inches are not viable usually the rest are 85% or better viable ... as the top inches rot they drop carbon dioxide and that seas in the lower grains from oxygen allowing them protection and moderate warmth ... this slowly converts the starch of the seed into sugars over 3 or 4 months ... then spread and a nice soak ... on e HOT day so the sun heats them up a bit then cover with a fine layer of dirt ...

I've been thinking about doing this too .. just haven't yet. I wanted to add a comment tho about egg production. It will drop into the winter months maybe down to nothing or one or two eggs every couple days. You can change that .. by adding a light and increasing the light either in the morning or in the evening. You may want to give the chickens a rest .. but it's also frustrating to be feeding them food and not getting eggs. I was amazed to see the difference after adding a light to my chicken house. Not many know how much light affects laying! When you think about it .. the setting of the sun .. is the trigger for them to go to their roost .. so it makes sense that light affects laying as well. All the best!
