Fender Tone Master Pro - Can The TMP And The LINE 6 HX ONE Play Nice Together?

Fender Tone Master Pro owners - If you've ever wondered what it would be like to have an external FX unit connected to the TMP, then this is your video! I'll show you 4 presets that I made in conjunction with the Line 6 HX One, and then we'll create a new preset that uses the HX One, Preset MIDI and the digital loops on the TMP. This step-by-step tutorial will have your expanded rig up and running in a few minutes. It's really that easy!

Hello, all: I am the one who requested Doug's help in using the Helix with the TMP. Doug, one word: FABULOUS! Your tutorials are well presented and laid out perfectly. Step by step instructions are really needed when dealing with digital and computer-oriented gear. Your approach is perfect; it could not be better. I have my Helix One, but I have three gigs this coming week. After that, I am going to follow your steps and start making some new presets. One question, though: what is the digital numeric readout on the table at the bottom left of your screen?

I wish Fender would add midi program change option to the foot switches not just to the preset midi

I play in a cover band that uses the poly capo all the time (so singer can sing in key that suits and I can still play open strings) and line6 does the best poly pitch shift I’ve found. I’ve been considering doing exactly this so many thanks!

Just to let you know, the Fender reps confirmed on Discord that a poly pitch was in the works for the TMP. However, my guess would be the earliest it would arrive is Dec in the next major firmware update.

How about a comparison between the king of cab and mic modeling (UA OX stomp in the stereo digital effects loop in the TMP) and the TMP speaker and mic modeling. In my experience every model sounds better with UA speaker modeling.

That could be fun, but it's $400 and it doesn't have a MIDI 5-pin connector. So there's no way to program it to respond to the TMP. Looks cool tho.

You can get them for MUCH cheaper now. They sell for prices in the 200s. I have 2 myself. I have noticed that speaker emulation is a HUGE part of the sonic quality of any model. This is shown in several model comparisons on KZread. One in particular compared the UA dream to the TMP deluxe 65. You would think that they would sound similar. Not even close. This is primarily due to the speaker emulation, not the amp modeling. I tested this by putting a dream (with cab sim off) in loop 3 of the TMP and an ox stomp in loop 4 of the TMP. Using switch link A for the TMP cab and loop 4 to toggle them independently of the deluxe TMP amp model and the dream 65 in loop 3. I was able to get almost identical tones when removing the cab differences. The differences were distinguishable at the “Nashville lead” setting of the 65 deluxe (max treble, min Bass, and max volume with guitar volume and tone to taste), but after putting an eq block after the TMP model to cut some bass and add a touch of air I could not distinguish between the dream 65 and the TMP model). You are correct that the ox does not have midi and that is a limiting factor, however it does allow quick switching between 4 different models with the 2 foot switches. I would have a hard time justifying the need for more than 4 models live. If you are in the studio the app connectivity gives a lot more options. The differences between what the OX does and any IR and SIC combination is night and day. I now have 2 ox stomps for stereo cabs 16 permutations stereo and another 8 mono. I cannot over state how much the ox tech helps get classic tones (maybe not for metal). I have had the FM 9, HELIX floor, tonex, all the UA amp sims, and the TMP (haven’t tried or had the itch for a QQ or Kemper) the ox tech blew away any internal speaker sim and leveled the playing field on amp sims when comparing between units using a independent loop switcher to the extent that it shifted my main priority from accuracy of amp models to accuracy of effects and ease of use on the interface (both of which the TMP shines). This was not welcome news to me as I am in the process of downsizing and would prefer a single unit with an exp or two over having to add another power source and 500a power hungry pedals without midi, but I could not ignore the findings. Maybe one day I will try putting this test up on KZread. Until then my ideal scenario would be an all inclusive modeler with OX speaker sim. I am not loyal to any one brand so I don’t care if it comes from a lic agreement between any of the aforementioned brands or UA developers provide an all in one updatable unit at a competitive price. Until that day TMP, 2 exp, 2 UA stomp it is.

Great video, thanks! I'm trying to get my TMP to work with my Boss GM-800 in a slightly different way (MIDI control, parallel path w/ stereo loop 3/4 acting as a stereo input, and going to output 2), but the MIDI implementation document by Roland is hard for me to understand. Doug, do you happen to have a GM-800 sitting around somewhere? (or can you make a video explaining how to read similar MIDI implementation doc?) It's a pain stomping both boxes to switch sounds. UPDATE: I got it to work! using channel 1, PC XXX works for switching to preset XXX up to 128, for 129-150 you need to switch banks by specifying CC 32 = 1 (haven't tried switching to presets above 128 yet). I'll try to figure out how to activate CTL buttons over MIDI next.

Wow, they make that MIDI chart unnecessarily complex! They've listed most of the values in hexadecimal, and I haven't seen that in decades. Congrats on getting it to work 👍

Hey Doug, have you found any latency using the digital loops on the TMP? I’d be interested in seeing you test out effects in stereo using loops 3 and 4. Thanks. 👍

Would this be the same way to connect a Roland GR55 synth? Thank you for the TMP videos.

i don't think so, as the GR-55 has the 13-pin HEX pickup. But you could probably connect the OUT from the GR-55 to one of the FX Loop IN jacks. It would have to be the first block in your preset tho, as the guitar signal would be coming from the GR-55. Hope this helps!
