+David Topchiev As a guitar player I can tell you that Panos is incredibly inspirational, and his feel , technique and phrasing are simply jaw dropping. He can play any style, and I think whether you listen to his version of long train running, or tracks in the style of Malmsteem, Blackmore or any number of other giant players -this guy really can play them all .You cannot compare apples to oranges, and of course Ritchie is a legend and rightly honoured by so many modern guitarists ( including Panos), I can tell you its Panos not Satriani, Lynch or Vai that makes me reach fro my guitar and try to play some of his astounding licks because I think - oh man, I have to try to learn that! - that is a very rare gift no matter whether you have 0 albums or 100 and yes I have learned a lot from Panos and his videos -more than any other guitarist on you tube, and for that I owe him a big thank you.

Flawlessly executed. Brilliant playing. Incredible versatility in various playing styles. Insane speed. Superb phrasing and timing, awesome sound and great use of signal processors/amps/guitars/tremolos/switches and all... But sadly it's still not Blackmore and probably never will.... There are indeed certain remotely SIMILAR elements like vibrato and the tonality of the sound in a few parts of this ad lib/improvisation, but that's about it - the rest is a cocktail of various playing styles shaken and stirred into one - which is not a bad thing… :-) Ritchie is a lot more than a sum of various simple parts: he was/is all about melody and composition, unique phrasing and unmatched sound extraction technique: sensible, enveloping & overpowering -- all coupled with a great knowledge of where and how to use them all - something that always separated him from mindless shredders doing "120" in a 25 mph zone. His one properly and timely used string pull coupled with his famous deep classical cello vibrato are worth much more than 5 minutes of sub-machine gunning by some biggies, including EVEN Malmsteem, who worshiped Ritchie himself. After 5 minutes of Malmsteen I get a headache from his up/down “flawlessly executed” arpeggios, though I never get tired of Ritchie’s always entertaining, enveloping and intriguing playing -- that's the difference. Blackmore is an institution and THE Holy Grail of rock! Period. Without Ritchie’s guitar/sound combo, there wouldn’t be in business about 80% of today’s electric guitar manufacturers and associated guitar signal processing gizmos. He put the meaning of a “guitar solo” in the music lexicon and on the map of everyday folks as well as founded “neoclassical” rock with his famous eastern scales multiplied by J.S.Bach. And speaking of who is better (I suppose “speedier”, as some of the comments suggested) -- with NO disrespect to Panos -- it's like comparing Bethoven to a shredder-kid in a guitar store on Saturday morning.. Or which is tastier: a pickle or a pastry? Each has its pace. For instance, Pink Floyd called themselves THE LEAST technically proficient band in the world - something, that didn’t stand in their way of success. Same goes for the Rolling Stones. Anyone heard Keith doing 1/20 of the Blackmore’s speed? :) So, the speed of the player shouldn’t even be a subject of this discussion. Just give a listen to Blackmore's "Anybody There" or "Maybe Next Time" or a "Snowman" and you'll understand that he's probably the ONLY player in the world who could play these absolutely "non-technical" (by today's standards) compositions as good as he does... There was a physical limit to technology back in the days of DP/Rainbow and you could do only so much. Now, the technology is virtually limitless. However there was more good stuff created/written/performed and recorded back then. Nevertheless, judging by what' s being played on the radio today, (with all modern technological progress), sadly I haven’t seen/heard an equal jump in the amount of talent as well as “timeless Platinum hits” created. True lovers of music and rock, (as in our case), sorely miss the nostalgic spirit and the true meaning of ROCK. Even with 13-16 year old girl-shredders: listen to what they play and how many of these teenagers find and old school of rock far more superior and interesting to anything of today! As far as all rock diehards are concerned, rock is dead. Or better yet, frozen in time with very little created of substance, lasting value and wide mass appeal. Reason being: music business moguls don't push rock anymore -- only a thug-life/gangster-rap, that facilitate corresponding glorifying of thug lifestyle with equal jump in imprisonment in private jails.... But that’s already a subject of a different conversation. So, going back, let’s not compare incomparable: Panos is great. Ritchie is great. Each is unique in his own right. Let’s give each one a well-deserved respect without mixing or comparing the two. After all, there’s a huge age gap between the two, as well as one of them was a true pioneer of a certain playing style… Remind me which one of the two, as I forgot... :)))
