Fender CS Relic Vs The REAL thing (and I’m giving BOTH away)
Музыка
Have you ever wondered what the pro’s and cons are of buying a real vintage Fender Jazz Bass vs a Custom Shop Relic?
If you have, then you're in the right place.
In this video I put a real 1969 Jazz Bass up against a Custom Shop 1964 relic for the ultimate battle…
Here’s just some of the things we’re investigating:
- Pricing (there's a twist to this!)
- Consistency
- Availability
- The “X” Factor
- And way more…
Oh… and if that’s not cool enough, I’m also giving these basses away along with $20,000 worth of bass gear that you could win.
As always, see you in the shed…
Scott :)

Oh my goodness I just saw you're giving away Sire too, that's definitely more my style, so if I don't win one of the priceless ones for my bro, I'll cross my fingers for a Sire, because I really need an upgrade, can't afford to fix my 15 year old bass :< Time took a toll on it

Being an old plodder who doesn't really do much playing these days I'll stick with my equally old 82 Squire JV seriesJazz bass. Based on the 62? model. Looks and feels..preloved and still sounds and feels great. Bloody love it
WOW... really nice giveaway, and thanks for giving back to the community. I'm sure I won't win, but I still think this is fantastic. Thanks for everything you've given to the bass community. I'm a much better bass player thanks to all your videos over the years.
404 error on trying to open the link
Scott, mate, learned so much from your vids! That vintage bass would be sweet!
You finally got me, after a few years of watching gratis on here. Nice hook, it worked 😎🎸
Hi Scott! 404 error! But no problem! Your vídeos are great and all the courses as well. I've Been a member last year and it's awesome! Waiting for the link! Thank you
Such beauties.... Today’s my birthday, and just winning one of these basses would just be the absolute best present ever. Also happy birthday Scott 💛 Keep up the amazing work my good sir!
I personnaly buy or build new basses and wait for them to become "vintage". And they do!
Well I’m totally stoked! Good luck ya’ll!
Once these are gone, PLEASE bring back your Overwater jazz bass! It's still the best sounding bass out of all of your collection.
Im in love of tha blue bass since the fierst video Scott made unboxing and compare whit a sire.
Happy funky birthday, Scottie, from Mexico Ciudad!
I had to perform about 2-3 years ago, and i didn't have a bass. So i walked into a shop and rented a black American Jazz bass with white pickguards. Certainly no vintage or a relic, but man was it hard to take it back to the shop. It was hands down the best bass i've ever played.
I’ve joined literally every contest for the last 2 years! I will never win 😭

You sure won’t...it’s rigged..
Is that the intro from the Bass Lessons video by Jaco Pastorius from DCI? I think I recognize that riff.
Wow! Great opportunity you're providing us, Scott! Thanks! Also, are you CRAZY??? Haha jk
Woahhhh thx Scott ! :) good luck everyone !
Great video. Gleam link has been down since at least yesterday evening, though.
I have just taken delivery of a CS P-Bass reissue 1960 Heavy Relic. Couldn't be happier. Defo has mojo in spades.
Wishin' you a funktastic birthday SD.
I remember seeing a 1969 jazz bass in a gc vintage section in south Houston. It was candy apple red with a matching headstock and it was the most beautiful jazz bass I have ever seen in person. Only bad thing is it was $10,000...
Happy birthday Scott . July 14th is French national day too so fireworks will be shared for you !
Happy birthday Scott :D
Hey scott, the link is not working, it says error 404.
This is unbelievable! Entries sorted, gimme dat bass!
Such a sublime sound from that ‘69 Jazz bass...
This is amazing, Scott! What about the x-factor for the '69?
Hi Scott! Excellent video and giveaway! Both are awesome sounding but it's you that makes them sound incredible! Keep up the amazing work, and have an awesome day!
Omg so cool, im at least going to try getting one.
Scott, thanks for this vid! I own a 65 pre CBS Jazz - black with black headstock. It has the X factor in spades. Thing is, it's so valuable I don't really want to take it to some gigs anymore. Thing is, I'm spoiled and can't seem to find anything else that satisfies. Didn't really want to spend $3000 on a backup bass, but it seems to come down to that I guess.
You should try to get Chris Wood from Medeski, Martin and Wood on the show. He is an incredible bass player who is proficient on upright and electric. He plays a Jazz Bass as his electric bass.
Thx Scott Have I mentioned that you ROCK!!! ? You do own that brother. Cheers, Arieh
Happy birthday Scott :)
Dear Scott, I believe that must be a CS reissue of a 60-62 Jazz bass, as those are the years with the concentric knobs. Not that it really matters! All the best on your wonderful KZread page.
love your videos 💪👍💙
It would be a dream come true to have that 1969 jazz bass.
Entered! I’ll be happy with one those kick ass straps to be honest
I had a nicely battered 1971 jazzer, bought it in stockholm. after a few years I took it to the bass gallery to be refretted, & when I went to pick it up, spotted a 2006 CS 1966 reissue (mark kendrick masterbuilt, one of a hundred, gold, matching headstock...). straight swap. no regrets.
Ok Scott, you finally twisted my arm. I'm in! :)
Can’t wait to win them BOTH!!! 😬
That custom shop bass is literally EVERYTHING thing I want.
I've had my '64 Jazz since 1978 and my '62 P since 1999 (bought on eBay!) There's def some inconsistencies - try D on the A string Vs. D on the E string - but with a good setup it's well worth it. p.s. living in a cardboard box with only these 2 basses as my last possessions. They'll be buried with me.
Scott's Bass still contains a little excess magic from being played by him This will be transferred to the lucky recipient Good luck everyone! And happy birthday Scott!
ayy happy birthday scott !
I’m hesitant about. Using vintage Basses online too....it would have to be through a store that gave an approval period where I could try it out and inspect it for a few days and if I didn’t like it, I could send it back...without that, no deal...
Roger Wills (Alan Jackson's bass player) is from around my hometown of Ada, OK. Many years ago he sold his '64 Jazz Bass to a mutual friend, Jeff Lowe: a move he deeply regrets from what Jeff says and I believe him. I ran into Jeff at a club he was playing and got to play around with the '64 J. Man, it had the greatest action and smoothest tone of any bass I have ever played. I have a '72 Jazz, which in no way compares to Jeff's '64. Despite my many pleadings, crying, and gnashing of teeth, Jeff would not, of course, trade me mine for his. It's a rare day when I don't think of Jeff's '64 Jazz Bass -- it is a phenomenal instrument.
I had wanted to say previously that if I had won the Fodera if I could trade you for one of your Fenders. Thanks for the opportunity! The Fodera is super cool, but it's more Bass than I am Man... 😁
Looking at my whole bass collection,I have fenders, Squiers, ibanezs and other name brands,as well as cheap basses my whole collection of 8 bass I got like maybe 2000$ ,Scott has what like 10thousand dollars worth of gear in just those 2 basses, not even getting into the 5 or 6 sitting behind him. I'd give my left leg for an hour with either one of those j bass beauty's
My generous neighbor lent me his 2009 Fender jazz bass while away for a year. I would so like to have one, but as a noob amateur I have to make do with less expensive instruments, unless luck strikes... I'll definitly enter :)
That Relic is just gorgeous
Crazy cool basses Bro...I would choice a Fender JB above one of my Pedulla basses 9 times out of 10 iff I owned a JB 🤪🤙
Owned a ‘65 P with massive neck problems...lost a little money trading out of it..owned a ‘73 Jazz...slight but annoying neck pocket problems..lost money selling that..bought Fender CS Basses since..top notch construction and comparable tone...absolutely no regrets....I’d still shell out the cash for the right vintage Jazz...
Tbh when I casually picked up a Flea signature jazz bass from Mexico, I was amazed and had to buy it (bargain diamond)
Yeah, I’ve fallen into the trap of buying a vintage bass online. It was a 79’ Fender Precision Bass. Lovely. Put most of my project car fund into it. Spoke to the owner, seemed legit, then I stupidly paid for it, then I never saw the bass or word from the owner. Lesson learnt there really. Looking for an old bass again. I just prefer the old guitars, I have a bunch of old guitars and they’re just wonderful. Sadly I never got my bass in the end, or my money back. It’s a hard lesson learnt there.
Link already fixed. Must clarify that participants MUST BUY in order to participate?
The bass I ordered last year was pretty much stolen by the customs (new rosewood laws) and I haven't had the money to buy another one since. Wish me luck!
It's not quite a classic yet, but I bought an untouched American Special P bass for $650 with the vintage style case. The guy said it was a gift and it was too big for him to play so it sat in a corner. It had not even been intoned yet.
Breathing intensifies in the intro lol
Holy hell do I regret subscribing to your email list. You absolutely flood my inbox.

I feel really sad for you giving away your '64 custom shop! what were you thinking?! Anyway thanks a lot for this chance to win those great basses!
Happy Birthday!
This time I´ll put my hands on a nice jazz bass!
Hey Scott What pressure items your colleagues were able to use in order to make you give away your blue jewel?
Watching these giveaway introductions, cant help my self from hearing RHCP - Give it away verse. Am I going to die?
Alright! Lets get this bass
Keep in mind that collectibles have dubious invest value. For example I bought a 1971 Hofner bass in 1986 for $375. In today's dollars that's $881. A 71 Hofner would probably go today for $2000. I will have made money for sure. But if I had invested that same $375 in an index fund it would be worth about $8,000 today. So if you love that 1966 bass, buy it, play it and let it bring you happiness but don't confuse it with a financial investment by any means.
Scott, I'm a little late to this, but something I wanted to toss on the discussion pile- one of the other magic questions to ask is, what are you intending to do with it? If you want to play it live and out, to my way of thinking, it makes very little sense to buy a vintage instrument. If it gets damaged, stolen, or what have you, your investment instrument is toast. Also, I'd be very reluctant to modify a true vintage instrument. You're not going to put a de-tuner on or rip the pickups out of a true ''62 Jazz or Precision if it's essentially a museum piece. The reissues tend to be working musicians' basses. Conversely, my two vintage instruments (early 70s P-Basses) are studio queens that I never let out of my sight. For the artists I've worked with, as soon as they see those basses, I don't need to pull anything else out unless I need a 5-string. My two vintage pieces were well-used by the time I got them, so they're not going to have that museum-level appearance. Anyway, just my two cents' worth- thanks for doing this and hope you're well!
Hmmm, I can't enter, the DoB box just stays red, and the 'continue' button stays greyed out. Bummer.
Anyone know what Fender colour Scott's custom shop jazz bass is? Is it Ocean Turquoise (but faded a bit?!) Looks amazing 🤩
Happy birthday!
The vintage one... 😍
Most interesting, however the reason I watched this is because the question I think is the most important is what is the sound difference? If you want vintage, you want original pickup, you want aged timber and finishes, you want the 'vintage sound'. How does the new bass compare? That question wasn't delt with.
I hope you still have a Jazz bass to play in your videos!
So I have to ask, is the 69 one of the 'diamonds in the ruff' you describe in the video? Looks and sounds amazing but what condition is it in?

Either way.....gimme!
I found the most amazing 65 p bass when I was in want a Monica once. Supposedly belonged to Darryl jones. Nearly bought it but talked myself out of it
And what about the sound between these two superb bass Scott ? ;)
I had a 62 Japanese reissue jazz brand new and a 73 American p sold the jazz the year before they stopped importing them. I recently looked for one and can no longer afford one. Still got the p and will never give it up. Ya like there a couple and need to be togeather. It has a soul it treats me well and is the best bass I’ve ever had but I really need a jazz in my life. I
Ok i did everything Scott give me the goods ts a Detroit thing baby ! Just hopeing i win of coarse .thanks again and to" you to Gab " you put him on the grill with this one ive seen that blue bass come up several times over the tears i mean yeRs. Haha thanks Scott

Would have been funny if I came to this fall's 1st bass lesson with the same bass as my teacher (He has a 69' JazzBass as in the video)
Noooo nobody except Scott's personal bass wth!
