After Episode 13 a lot of people have been asking for a speaker comparison between the two Blues Juniors. So here it is with a lot of surprising conclusions.
Is the diference just in the speaker?

Loved the comparison video Budda - lot of fun. I was floored by the sustain on the PRS and to a slightly lesser degree, the Sheraton. Some really beautiful playing that gave a good indication of what the amps were capable of in a variety of sonic situations. Also gave the listener a nice change-up so nothing got too stale as you went along. Great stuff - many thanks.

Thank you Budda for the effort and the great work again! I have mixed feelings with the tweed. Kind of like it with the Tele and the Sheraton, but not that much with the Strat. A little too harsh when it starts breaking for my taste. More pleasing in the clean tones. Anyway, another great video! At the moment i'm after a Victory V40 amp of a 65 Deluxe RI, both with pedals. Do you have some advice? Thanks

I feel like they sounded best with each other's speakers!! The broken in speaker tames the brightness and intensity of the new tweed amp, and the the new tweed speaker brings out the most of the well-broken in tubes of the tolex amp. Ahaha seriously though the tweed amp with the black speaker best combo IMO. I have a black BJr III, and I love the crap out of it. I got a stagemaster road case for it, $250 VERY well spent, as it saved the amp in a bad car wreck! And the thing sounds great at rock gigs with my SG, and equally great with a Tele with flatwounds on it at gigs with my Cash tribute band. Such a versatile little amp, I will always be thankful that the store didn't have any Mustang modelling amps in stock when I went there to buy one years ago, and I decided to plug into a different little Fender combo. The all-tube Blues Jr.... I have never looked back!!

I have a Tweed Jr with the Jensen speaker. I love it with my Telecaster. It's OK with a Strat, but the Tele is perfect with it. What you say in your other Jr review video is true (great review... one of the reason I bought a Jr)... it sounds kind of like a DI when you roll the guitar volume down. That is the only downside of this amp in my opinion. Instead, I just roll down the output of my MXR Dynacomp with my foot to clean it up. Works great and no DI sound. Great videos, Budda. I'm thinking about getting the Fender Supersonic 22, or a 65 Deluxe Reverb, or a 68 Deluxe Reverb. You should do a 22-watt Fender combo comparison video of these three amps. Your thoughts would be highly valuable.

I tend to prefer the Black for the electric blues/jazz stuff (Stratocaster/Sheraton) and the Tweed for classic rock/surf music (Tele/PRS). As I lean more towards a Keith Richards/Neil Young kind of tone, I think I would choose the Tweed because of its brightness and its fuzziness. I love that thing breaking up.

@@BuddaGuedes based on the judgement from the impulse responses, it sounds pretty flat. What most annoys me on ferrite magnets is that "airy" sound on low frequencies. Black BJ all the way , but the tweed looks a lot cool , i wanted to buy the Gator one , but in the music store i saw another flaw , those "crocodile" scames will fall over time , but the speker in the gator is better than the twwed also. Well... being partly deaf from loud amps & bands etc, I found it hard to distinguish between the two. With the Strat I thought the Tweed sounded slightly smoother/ less harsh than the std. But with he Tele it was the other way round. So unsurprisingly, the guitar affects how the amp / speaker sounds. Given that the only apparent difference is in the Tolene, rather than circuit boards / extra amp features (?) it seems many guitarists would be happy to have either model. Whether it's worth paying the extra for the tweed is a moot point, given that you could probably experiment with other speakers in a std model. Blended with a drummer & a band belting out a tune at an audience, in a room mostly likely with poor acoustics, I doubt anyone could tell the difference! The quality of the player would show tho'.

Good to see here's another guy who knows how to dial in a BJ for real good tone: Master at max (or near) and PreAmp (however low) for actual volume. PreAmp distortion is actually overrated - at least for Blues oriented stuff... That said, I'd think my bandmates would kill me, though, if I played with the settings shown in our rehearsal room... 15 Watts can be real loud after all. I hardly ever go past 3 on volume when the master is cranked way up this way. And yes: though I tend to like the classic "Jensen sound" of older Fender amps I actually don't quite like it here because of its rather spiky treble - Tolex BJ with its own speaker sounds great! However: with the Sheraton the Jensen sounds quite nice!

  • @BuddaGuedes

I'll certainly do. Yeah, the guitar's volume - one shouldn't forget that... I use it a lot more since I switched to our way of setting the amp. But anyway, when that's on max (like for a solo) it DOES get real loud with my BJ III (standard black one, but with an Eminence Swamp Thang speaker, which is actually a bit tougher and more solid on the bottom end than the stock speaker). Really no regrets having bought that amp a couple of years ago...
