Fence Clamp (And More!) // The Cheapest Method Known to Man to Set up a Sacrificial Fence
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
No, I'm not the inventor of this handy little device, but I challenge you to find a cheaper, easier way to set up a sacrificial fence! This little jig could set you back a few finger rakes in the ash tray of your car or a little diving in the cushions of your couch. I also show you a few methods jigs you can attach with it.

Put a washer between the knob and the clamping block and you shouldn't have problems with the block twisting when you turn the knob.

I did think of this but it doesn’t completely solve the problem. It is definitely better than the wood on wood.

Make the block on the non working side of the fence large enough so its square edge rest on the table, it will then not be able to spin.
Rob to the rescue .. I was juuuuust saying to myself, "Self! you need a fence clamp. And you ARE NOT buying it!" .. thanks Rob!

I've been on the 'fence' for several months about the Rockler universal fence clamp...then I found this ...the perfect answer...cheap and DIY. To avoid the twisting motion of the small block in your first version I plan to go for a modified second version. I plan to use 'store bought' knobs and a 2" x 1/2" wood disc or circle. I will build it this afternoon (after putting the 4th coat of poly on my current project). Thank you!

Interesting idea. I see two issues with it, though: 1. As can be seen at 4:54, the smooth shank can slide up a smooth hole. The simplest way to counteract this is to make sure that the angle of the clamp is *less* than ninety degrees, so the end of it is where the lion's share of the clamping pressure is located. (This is a good idea anyhow, as that will help make sure that what you are clamping is held as close to the center of the material as possible.) Even better would be to also make it out of a bent piece of threaded rod, as the threads will grip the sides of the hole, preventing sliding altogether, as well as allowing clamping to *very* thin material. 2. Anytime you are rotating something as you apply pressure, the growing friction will tend to cause it to shift position; this is one of the reasons why we use washers. For the clamp, a second, free-spinning piece of wood needs to be added that has a rabbet at the base of the hole so that a lip rests on the top AND the side of the fence, keeping it from turning. The joining surface between the piece and the knob should also be as large as is practical, as the friction between the two is what keeps the clamp from loosening.

That is very nice! It looks as though instead of the little bit of wood spinning that is instead trying to raise itself. Have you tried using a spacer that is the same height as the fence? I think that may eliminate both these problems.
@MakeThings

It’s the shape of the bolt unfortunately. It’s square but it has a taper on it that makes it rise. It really doesn’t effect the integrity of it though. Thanks buddy!

Neat idea. I have a block of wood with a hole drilled in it which I use with a dovetail clamp to produce a similar result. Your design seems a bit lower profile and less fiddly though.

If you make the sacrificial board exactly an inch thick, it makes it easy to use your fence's measuring rule.

Great app, isn’t it? I haven’t found you there yet but friend me so I can hit you back.
How does the bolt attach to a tall fence?
I'd suggest you wack the metal-angel-screw-thingy with a hammer, changing the bend from 90 degrees to 87-ish. That way the clamping force will increase and there is reduced risk for slippage, if you catch my grip. :)
@MakeThings

If I could remake the video, I would include that. I had the same thought and already smacked her and completely agree. I did it to mine because it was at about a 93isher, but it does now grip better. Thank you!
I like a challenge.

I have the same question, please?
@MakeThings
4 жыл бұрын
No problem. I attached it to a shorter board that’s as tall as the fence with a few screws. The clamp then inserted into the shorter board with a 3/8’s hole. I’m sorry for the confusion! Did that clear it up?
@rwind656

Yes, thank you! I actually figured it out after I hit send and felt rather silly, lol. Smart little tool with so many uses! I was wondering if there was another L-shaped screw/ bolt we had around here to save a trip to the store and cutting... something keeps nagging at me... J-bolts maybe, or some hardware we saved out of something unused.

Gerald Roth lol. Most of us don’t own a rhino either. Not fair!
So let me get this straight... He recommends buying a drill press vice, because they're really handy.... Except for using on a drill press, where they're designed use is. He then uses a quick clamp to hold the tiny block to make a tool that is kind of superfluous because he has.... Wait for it.... A quick clamp, which does most of the jobs he is using that little creation for. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a lot of this dudes videos, but this one seems a bit of a waste of time to me.
@MakeThings
4 жыл бұрын
You don’t have to buy anything Dave. I don’t think I ever alluded to this fence clamp taking the place of the drill press clamp. In fact, I can’t ever imagine how the fence clamp could ever take the place of it. The drill press clamp is great at holding metal items for drilling or cutting metal. I have even said that I don’t think there’s a replacement that can be made for a drill press clamp, which is why I so highly encourage people to buy one (and they’re cheap...I’ve seen them for $12). I appreciate that you enjoy some of my other ideas, but I’ve never said there’s a replacement for the drill press clamp.
@daveking2804

@@MakeThings I was referring to using the f clamp to hold the block on the drill press, rather than the drill vice, specifically designed for that purpose. Don't sweat it buddy, I enjoy the way your narrative in your videos, the way you shoot and video them. Keep doing what you're doing.

Dave King thank you. It’s funny you say that, my drill press vice has a notch on it to put that clamp on to hold it down to the DP table. So a clamp for the clamp. 😅 Take care and Merry Christmas Dave!
