Sadly during the World Athletics Championships in Eugene Natalia had stomach problems (probably food poisoning). That's why she did not perform well in the semi-finals. This year Natalia has the eighth quickest time (50.02), but I am sure that she will run a sub 50 soon.

    If Sydney and Femke both run the flat 400 at Worlds - and I still consider that a big if - and if the other contenders are also in good form, then the WC 400 could have the best ever depth of times for place. I doubt anyone in Budapest will be challenging Koch’s 47.60 WR from 1985.

    @@keithbate9405 It is unfortunate that so many of the performances of that era, especially those by East German and Soviet athletes, are suspect. So many athletes were involved in systematic, state-sponsored PED programs that it is difficult truly to believe that anyone from those countries was clean during training and competition. Quite a number were caught by drug tests, but many more doubtless evaded getting caught. And when athletes were incredibly talented to begin with, as I think Koch was, adding PED to the mix could result in otherworldly performances.

    @@RichardIILionheart The East German rowing coach Jurgen Grobler who became the GB rowing coach in the 1980's admitted that he was forced to give his rowers drugs that came via State labs. He said that all East German athletes had to take the drugs provided by the state. So no doubts re the East Germans. I believe Koch has subsequently admitted this anyhow. She was an exceptional athlete in her youth and was singled out by the state . The present cohort of talented young female athletes with improvements in Sports science and the new shoes may get close to Koch's time. But it will take a hell of a performance to erase that record.

  • @RichardIILionheart

    @RichardIILionheart

    @@keithbate9405 I am not aware of Koch ever openly saying she herself used PED, but there seems to be written evidence that she did at least during the early 1980s, and could have done so prior to that. By 1978 she already held the 400 WR. In 1979, I once rode next to her on the Montreal metro. Physically she certainly did not give the impression of having used steroids, but that it far from conclusive. I would like to believe the best about Koch and a number of others, but it is difficult. I sometimes think World Athletics should simply draw a line about 1990 and start a new WR progression starting 1 January 1990. The GDR no longer existed, so the most sophisticated PED program was gone. Maybe not fair to clean athletes prior to 1990, but the alternative is just waiting and hoping someone will eventually eclipse records such as 10.49 (which was actually wind-aided) and 21.34 and 47.60 and 1:53.28.

She won many bronze medals in the 1980's that should have been silver and gold but for the Eastern European cheaters. her British records have only been beaten fairly recently having stood for many years.
