As a former paper maker, I understand the nature of cellulose fibres to tangle with each other and bond. Vander Val’s forces. That’s how paper is made. So rehydrating the paper relaxes some of those fibres so they bond with the nearby fibres. Mulberry paper is good because the fibres are long and strong and can tolerate all the manipulating. Newspaper, construction paper, and many craft papers are made from wood pulp which are very short fibres and not strong and so will likely disintegrate rather than rebond. Your vid has really inspired me to try with the small mulberry papers I got from Amazon in my case all in the pink family and all fabulous for this technique. I have also done momigami and use a little bit of glycerine in the water. (about 1part glycerine to 6 parts water or more dilute. too much glycerine leaves the paper tacky) thanks so much again!🦌💌❤️📚

These were all mulberry but you can use other papers in-between. I think you just need to make sure there is enough mulberry to keep it all felted together x

Thanks again, GB; thank you so much for your interest and watching the videos; it all really helps. X The Joomchied papers have a strength that allows them to be used as book covers in bookbinding. The Japanese also use it to make garments, lanterns, parasols, purses and for the divisions within their homes. It is a time-consuming skill but has been put to good use in their traditional crafts.😀

There is a good comment in one of the comments above about the attributes of mulberry that lend themselves to felting. But you can put different papers between the layers. You just need enough mulberry to allow it all to felt up. X

Can you use other papers than mulberry paper? Thank you for sharing these techniques you have breathed alot of life into my work

Hi again. Yes, traditionally, they oil it, and wax it. Felted or momigamied mulberry paper is used for clothing, interior walls, parasols, lampshades, etc. It is a great product and is strengthened by the kneaded or folding process. Enjoy X😀

Hi so glad you like it. A big one would be the same process. I haven't tried it yet but I would certainly tru rolling it in the bamboo blinds to felt it. Alteratively you can rollit in fine bubblw wrap as well. Good luck X

Adding nut oil sounds like it would affect the longevity of the paper as oil has a tenancy to go rancid over time. It would change the look of the paper for the better though I imagine. Would the oil not come off on the framing glass also?

Hi again Sherry; I was using the nut oil at first, but I think I would use poppy oil now. I think if it is left to completely dry, it works well. I have framed up a small one, but I would usually leave the large Joomchied papers unframed. XX😀

The company that you linked to offers a good size paper. The larger the better so that it doesn't seem so precious. Makes it easier to experiment with colors and shapes.

Hi, I didn't paint it and the dye did come out and colour the other papers but had a good effect. I am going to get white or cream and colour it in acrylic so that the colour is fixed. Just to see what happens x

Are the colored pieces mulberry paper as well ? Can you buy it already dyed?

Hi Karen. Yes, these papers are all mulberry papers. They are all pre-dyed, and the colour runs when wet. You could buy white and paint it in acrylic.
