The poor guy probably had some minor brain damage from that initial impact. That spring broke through his helmet. In one of his interviews he mentions he has no recollection of what happened. He is lucky to be alive.

Well it's difficult to say for sure. Mika Hakkinen went through an incident with much higher G-forces, cracked his skull and lost the hearing in his other ear, yet went on to win two world championships.

I was 13. Now came back to watch how it went nack then because the memory popped in to my mind. I remember being really worried and stunned of how something like this could happen

Whether or not it affected him as a driver, I'm glad he's alive, I'm glad he's healthy, and I'm glad he was able to come back to the sport.

That crash helmet still saved his life though. Those things were already great but this crash encouraged people to make them more resistant to all forms of impact, not just crashes

He was never quite the same after this. Such a shame. Not only a lovely guy, but a hell of a racer.

I was at the circuit when this happened. I cannot begin to describe the confusion among the crowd when it happened. You couldn't see the suspension spring hit is helmet on the big screens at the time as the screens were quite far away (on the other side of the track from where I was standing), it looked as if he inexplicably went straight on into the barrier. Everyone was really confused when he didn't get straight out of the car and they were all discussing what could've happened. Some thought it was a car failure, others thought he'd passed out. I thought it was a car failure and that he'd been knocked unconscious in the impact. It was only after returning to a relatives house later that afternoon and going online did I learn just how severe it was. There was a solemn feeling among the crowd during the race build up the following day. Everyone was talking about it. I have photos of when they brought his broken car back to the pits. It was so surreal to be there when this happened. This was such a scary incident and Massa was so fortunate to survive.

@@danielmp2085 It was a web page on his LG/Samsung(?) touchscreen phone. Back then I tried hard to make him find a picture or a video of the race because initially all he could show me was the race results timetable and I wanted more as I was forced to miss the race that day (he eventually found me a pic of the start of the race). Phones with acceptable Internet speed came in the early 2000's with i-mode.

How he recovered from this I will never know. True racer and will always be one of my favourites. From Australia xx

I remember watching this live. My heart sunk. Pretty sure it was only a few weeks after Henry Surtees fatal accident. Both of them crashed with their foot buried on the throttle. I feared the worst for Felipe.

Yeah, I watched his death live too, a goddamn tyre struck his head, and it was GG. That is why teams get massive fines if tires come off the chassis after impact.

The way the marshalls were acting around Massa i think they thought he was dead!

Marshalls, normally, are NOT allowed to check the drivers especially if they are unconscious. Only EMTs or Meds are permitted to verify the pilot's condition. In big motorsport event, like F1 or MotoGp, everyone have his roles. Track marshalls are for safety. Medic, paramedic and EMTs are for aiding the injuried. Fire marshall are for preventing fire and to free stuck drivers inside their car.

Not gonna lie, being 12 and naive at the time, I genuinely thought he was dead as they weren't showing anything about it. And it was only until I saw the footage of him being taken out of the ambulance waving his hand that I could breathe easy again.

i dont know what You hear ... starting 8:17 he gives full Power and switches gears .. then at 8:21 You can hear that the engine slows down and he drives strait without trying to steer in any direktion till impakt ... so my Question is .. why? what happend ?? something with the back weels ?? why he never tries to brake or at least steer into the courve ???

Yes i saw it later after my comment ... with the video in Slow speed , You can see that at 08:21 something hit him at the head/helmet ... after that the engine slows down and he drove strait into the wall ... so not the impakt knocked him out .. it was on the track at 08:21 in this video

I’m not gonna lie when I saw it on tv I thought Massa was gone. But after some time he acknowledged the crowd and I was so relieved. When Michael retired I was cheering on Massa so I couldn’t believe what I was seeing so sad. I also remember seeing something fly towards him and was like what the heck was that something just hit him. But thank goodness he’s fine.

Remember watching this live. Can’t believe it’s been 10 years ago already. Only seems like last year. Thank goodness he’s ok.

@@bodyzergcasting ma magari Russell ha capito la storia dell'accento e voleva sapere, come informazione aggiuntiva, se oltre all'accento, parla meglio degli italiani :D Cmq no Russell. Marc parla abbastanza bene l'italiano, grammaticalmente è più bravo di molti italiani, sbaglia alcune parole italianizzandole dallo spagnolo o dall'inglese, ma comunque si capisce benissimo cosa vuol dire e quel che è importante è la sostanza di ciò che dice. Negli anni è migliorato molto ed errori grammaticali ne fa sempre meno. L'accento spagnolo gli è rimasto, ma a me non da' per nulla fastidio, anzi ;)

Hardly. The crash into the barriers was probably 20-30 G max, Nothing for a crash. It was the spring hitting him in the head at 200 mph that did the damage.

That suspension which impact on his helmet was lost by Barrichello's car, I remember perfectly after eleven years from that facts.

One of the greatest to never get a championship. Massa, Moss, Barrichello, Coulthard, Irvine, Fretzen, Webber How my opinions changed in a over a year. Still, Massa, Moss, Irvine, Fretzen Webber, Barrichelo, Coulthard a little bit more questionable. Definitely would include, Patrese, Reutemann, Peterson, Villneuve. And how has nobody mentioned Pironi, probably the unluckiest not to get his championship considering after his crash with 5 races to go, he never raced again and he still nearly beat the eventual Champion, Keke Rosberg. (Just pointing out, my knowledge on the history of the sport before, I'll say 70s F1, was very limited, as you can see I only mentioned Sir Stirling Moss, may he rest in peace)

when I was watching this live being 14 year old, I wasn't aware how dangerous that crash was and could possibly be fatal. Now watching replays (knowing everything ok with Felipe) give me anxiety.

Genè sempre sul pezzo....

Con la telemetria in bella mostra e il suono chiarissimo, Gené riesce a dire che la macchina non rimane accelerata... A me piace come commentatore tecnico ma a volte ha questi blackout inspiegabili, poi si risveglia. Come in questo caso, prima dice quella cazzata poi torna in lui e fa notare la molla a velocità normale. I pedali erano entrambi azionati perché ovviamente perdendo conoscenza non aveva più il controllo di nervi e muscolatura quindi i piedi sono andati giù, solo che il freno era sì azionato ma senza la forza necessaria che ci metterebbe un pilota cosciente...aveva applicato una pressione appena sufficiente da risultare attivato nella telemetria della TV.

Minuto 8:20 la molla che gli rompe il casco. Si sente un "tac" sulla visiera del casco. Fateci caso bene.

Si vede benissimo che rimane con tutto il gas aperto da subito dopo l'impatto alle barriere.. Frenando e tenendo tutto il gas aperto assieme per poi tenere solo il gas con il motore fuorigiri.

Già da prima, appena colpito dalla molla. Perdendo conoscenza i piedi si rilasciano e vanno giù sui pedali. Per il gas non serve molta pressione quindi va giù facilmente, il freno ha una corsa molto corta quindi risulta azionato anche se la pressione esercitata non è ovviamente quella di un pilota cosciente.

Incidente indimenticabile era il mio diciottesimo compleanno è l’ho vidi in diretta

Depends on the Crash. On this one nobody understood why he isnt just going out of the car. They thought there is something with his feet. So they Filmed it hoping to see a thumb up. By Bianchi on the other side. Everybody who saw that on TV immiaditley thought: ,, Thats it. He is dead. " because you could See how heavy the impact was. Thats something you dont want parents to see.

Até hoje quando vejo essas imagens chocantes o felipe ali depois do impacto sem reação choro ...muito porque me lembro exatamente do dia em que estava assistindo o treino....poderia ter sido um acidente fatal...graças a Deus ele se recuperou...

Comunque è incredibile come Gene ha visto i segni a terra, la posizione della macchina e subito ha capito che l’incidente era “strano” È impressionante vedere/ascoltare quanto i piloti abbiano una conoscenza così profonda di ciò che accade in pista e delle sue conseguenze.

I never noticed you can actually HEAR the impact of the heave spring against Felipe’s helmet on the in-car camera feed before!

Massa was a below average F1 racing driver . He won 11 races in total and they all came from when he started on the front row of the grid. He lacked the skill to overtake other drivers even when he was in a top team. Ferrari picked him to be a number 2 driver and he was capable of that but not anything more.

I was only 7 at the time of the crash, I remember watching it live when the BBC used to have full coverage of the weekend. I remember they suspended the broadcast shortly after they realised he wasn’t responding, which caught my attention because I had no clue why it just switched off; it reappeared just as they were loading his car onto the flatbed trailer and I was really confused as to what had happened. Wasn’t till several years later that I pieced it all together, shame he was never really the same after that.

Nope your wrong it was never suspended. They cut to Jake Humphrey and co talking. Which is what they usually did at the end of a session anyway. But yea they showed the replays later than the world feed.

Still have this full session recorded somewhere. Was a bit of a nerd and used to record F1 back then.

Was there in hungary that day. All the party and excitement stopped the moment we saw the doctor approaching his car. From that moment on it was silent like the sun fell from the sky for an hour. After this slowly it went back to normal

He still is a commentator, now pit reporters for sky sports italia are Davide Valsecchi and Jacques Villeneuve

One of the scariest things I remember in my time of being an F1 fan. We were fearing the worst when we discovered what it was that had impacted Felipe! Shows how tough his head is I suppose. 😉

That's debatable. Halo is designed for tyres and larger objects, this spring would probably got through.

@@repo4 also debatable, you have to think the halo designers considered this accident when designing it. Hence the halo, not the aeroscreen. Again, I don't know for sure, just debating.

The halo would have decreased probabilities, but the piece could have passed without touching the halo

if this exact accident happened with halo I think the spring would hit the Halo, judging by tracking the spring but that will not always be the case

The halo could have also deflected it down into the cockpit and caused him more severe bodily injury

He was really lucky. It must have been a hell of an impact

The sound of the engine revving while Massa sits there unconscious is just haunging.

Massa's the unluckiest F1 driver ever. Lost the championship in the very last race by 1 point, then a year later he nearly gets killed by a flying spring!

Holy if it wasnt for the helmet, it would've gone straight through his face

My biggest takeaway from this video is that Italians do in fact say "mama mia" when something bad happens.

It's a similar crash in the sense that they both went straight on at a corner. But Schumacher's crash was at a much higher speed to begin with and he didn't slow down that much across the gravel, then went through the three rows of tyres into a concrete wall. Plus the crash structures were better in 2009.

not much really, that piece can pass through the Halo, aeroscreen is a complete solution

same as shumi accident in silverstone but shumi broke his ankle in that time going under barricades was very bad you head just went straight thru the tires . but nobody thought of halo then, cameron think the one that changed massa was the one barrichelo trew a bolt to his head ,that could had been bad, remember that what killed ayrton a piece of metal went thru his head in the only open space of his helmet . massa was lucky by millimiters and poor ayrton was meet by destiny, senna had no injuries if it werent for that piece of metal he woul had walk back to the pits , so sad i miss ayrton so much still 26 years latter
