I adopted a(n estimated by 2 vets) 5 year old street cat. He lived in front of a convenience store at least 6 months that I knew him. One cold Dec day (2017) he chased me across the parking lot and pleaded with me. I was on my bike. I had a 5 year old bonded sibling pair at home. I am a long-time expatriate in Korea. Anyway, I went back the next day with a carrier. He jumped in and came home. He spent 2 months quarantined in the guest room as he had calicivirus. I made sure he was all clear and my other two were up-to-date on vaccines before introducing them. Valjean was skinny, scrawny, dirty when I got him, but after a wash (our first vet sent him home fully anesthestized, so I washed him, and we promptly found a new vet). I lived in a small town. Our nice vet was honest with me about his limitations, and for years we went with a round of steroids and antibiotics every few months when he flared up. Eventually they were losing effectiveness, so we drove an hour to a recommended big city vet. It ended up taking 3 trips- pre, surgery, post- the surgery being an overnight. Cost about W1.2 million- over $1000. It’s now been over a year post surgery, and no regrets! My boy is 8 1/2, no more regular vet visits, and no more flare ups with sores and drooling. I joke that with COVID instead of traveling in the summer, I bought an aircon and cat surgery, but the truth is seeing my boy living his best life, with no more pain! He still has his 4 fangs. He can still eat kibble, but we have switched to mostly wet food (for all 3). He’s totally self grooming and not so shy about putting his face near mine. I still feel guilty for not taking him in until he was sick. I was content with 2 cats, and didn’t really think of a scrawny, dirty, but friendly street cat as mine. (I got Suzy and Woosi from another expatriate who was leaving Korea). Now I have three 8 1/2 year old black and whites. S & W have come to tolerate their adopted brother. In our case, surgery was a good choice.

Thank-you, SO much Doctor Anthony. Our soon to be 7 yr old, princess cat Choco Belle just had 11 teeth removed. It was horrifying at first. Thankfully a few days later she is eating soft food and expecting daily brushing. This video gives me some ‘ peace’ in that we did the right thing for our girl.

I adopted a cat and a month later he got sick bloody. Took to vet. He has stomatitis. He got steroid shots every 3 months then every month then I got all his teeth pulled. He did better for awhile then had to go to vet he still had the stomatitis got a shot. He has a red place in mouth but not getting a shot for now. There is no cure. He eats little soups and small hard cat food put in it. Plays and does well but he will eventually need a steroid shot. It is very painful disease. If u care about ur feral cats have then put to sleep. I was told pull teeth that dont work euthanasia death is only thing left. My cat gets shots but eventually the shots wont work. It is a painful death without help.

I'm going to take out a loan as well... It's a heartbreaking disease for cats and owners, so expensive to treat. I am so sorry that you have 5 cats that have it, I hope you find a solution for them and give them some relief and thank you so much for helping them. Thank you for being their angel. I got a kitten from the humane society 3 months ago and when she starting losing baby teeth I noticed her breath smelled awful. I got the Vet to look at it and she thinks it’s stomatitis. There’s no way in hell my cat is letting me go near her mouth with dental wipes or toothbrush. She eats hard and soft food fine so far. I adopted her as what they said was “a healthy cat”. God knows if she has an underlying condition like FIV or whatever. My vet just said wait and see what happens, but as I understand it could be full blown by the time she’s 9 months old. So she has juvenile stomatitis and I assume much too young to have developed plaque yet. I’m using beekeepers propolis spray in her mouth. Seems to help. I’m freaking out because I rescued another cat before she got “sort of diagnosed” and he’s 3 months old. Is this contagious? If so I will likely have to put them both down because I can not even come close to affording all the dental care and home care needed. I’m devastated.

I have a very sick kitty it started with her eyes the inside of her eyelids were swollen then her nose got so much mucus drainage and scabbing up and on top of that problem she started to not eat anything now she can't drink water so I just looked at her mouth while cleaning her nose with a damp rag and realized she is not able to open her mouth like it's so bad I couldn't tell but now I see the problem. My question is how or what could I do to get her mouth opened because I can't afford a vet right now

Our cat was doing fine on the DEPO shot given about once every other month or once a month depending on his pain. We were advised that this may cause diabetes so we switched to that oral prednisolone which we now feel was a mistake. We want to switch back to the DEPO shot. How long after stopping Prednisone can we switch to depo. He's only been on prednisolone for 3 months. We had a partial extraction done but he needs a full extraction. Saving $$$ now for next year. 👍

Hi, stomach titus is synonymous with gastic titus or gastroenteritis. This condition is usually caused by viruses or intestinal bacteria. You need to find out what the cause is from in order to properly treat this condition. An internal medicine specialist would be the best individual to contact in order to treat it properly. Some of the viruses that cause stomatitis can also result in gastroenteritis. Does your cat have both conditions? It is important that you get this properly evaluated by your trusted veterinarian who will have a full medical history of your cat.

Hello Doctor I need help here 911. My cat in the last 2 months has lost weight. I am not sure how much but it's noticable. He might have weighed 15-16 pounds now he weighs about 10. I live in a third world country and none of the vets here can tell me what's wrong. My cat pretty boy wants to eat and cries out but won't eat his dry food. I started feeding him wet food and he only licked the gravy. Now for the past 2 days he acts like he's hungry and goes to the bowl and he balks at the food. I have tried everything he eats some canned tuna and I started feeding him raw beef and he seems to want to eat and does but he chews all weird sideways and you can tell he is having issues . We have performed blood test all good no abnormalities we had him tested for renal dificiencies and all was good no issue, we have also tested him for leukemia and feline aids nothing. We had his teeth cleaned and the found a white lesion and something in the back of his throat with puss? His gums are a pale pink and no blood. He did have some gingivitis before we cleaned it. Now I have contacted some vets online and they are now telling me it might be kidney desease or cancer but again bloodwork was clean. The biggest thing I noticed was that he has trouble physically eating

I’m not a vet but I’m a kitty momma of 30+ years and although I have no advice to give regarding medicine I would suggest that you give what’s called a light diet, boiled or steamed chicken, white fish or canned tuna which you mentioned until you know what’s wrong for sure. As you don’t know what’s going on in there, making so many changes to his diet isn’t the best thing for his health, I completely understand how much you want to make sure he eats but wet food in gravy, raw beef (which is a whole new food type to adjust to), canned tuna, dry food, hill’s science diet (which should be ‘prescribed’ or at least recommended by a vet and if yours has, that’s okay) and fancy feast is a lot. Obviously I don’t know how much your vet has been involved and if they suggested the different food types but if they didn’t, I’d stick with the chicken, white fish and canned tuna served little and often, maybe blend it with some of the liquid you boiled the meat in to make a soup which he can lap up rather than need to chew, seeing as you said he licked the gravy from the wet food he might do better with a more liquid option. As I said, I’m not a vet but it hurts my heart to hear of poorly kitties, my vet told me my precious one has gingivitis today and sent me home with a note to research stomatitis which is a little bit different, quite frightening to hear about and what brought me here, I’m praying it is gingivitis and will be treated with the antibiotics that Daisy has been given. I hope our little ones heal soon, best of luck to you both!

My cat is anywhere from 8-10 years old I adopted her about three years ago. In December I took her in for a dental. The Dr notated that he saw some redness in the back of her mouth but it was a wait and see thing. A few weeks later she wasn't eating. She would go to her bowl try to take a bite wince in pain and run away. I called the office and the dentist wasn't there that day but they had me bring her in for a recheck and said she had a stomatitis flare up. They treated her with a steroid and antibiotic and said back in the next week and see the dentist. After 24 hours she was eating normally. When I saw the dentist he thought we should wait and see as it had gone into remission and if it happened again we would do a full mouth extraction. Four months later and here we are. She does have feline herpes so I am wondering if it would just be more humane to put her down?

Misty, we realize this is very difficult as pet parent. We can control it but no cure it. There will always be some daily home care and the odd flare up. The good news is the pain can be easily controlled. The pain usually is due to ulcers and fissures in the mouth especially at the angle of the mouth. Extraction of the premolars and molars will help a lot but long term home care is the key to long term success. Long term care involves using 1TDC twice daily along with a chlorohexidine rinse and Maxi Guard gel twice daily. I hope this helps....Dr. James Anthony (Veterinary Dentist).

When I got my very sick boy from the street, he was estimated by 2 vets about 5 years old. I had known him as the friendly stray by the convenience store for about 6 months. His first 2 1/2 years with me and regular steroids and antibiotics for flare ups, his health improved. He gained weight, self grooms (after an initial bath), plays. . . 14 months ago - when the meds were becoming less effective (and COVID kept me in Korea all summer), we drove an hour to a city vet who could do extractions. My boy is now 8 1/2 and at his best!! I got a slight discount for his being a “rescue cat” even though I’d had him over 2 1/2 years by then. Still, over $1000. I have no regrets! He’s a happy, heathy, loving, appreciative boy! No more flare ups- no sores, drooling, pain! He still technically has kidney disease, but his bloodwork is much improved. It wasn’t cheap, but I plan on having him many more years.

I am in my 60's and within 3 years I have treated 3 cats with severe dental disease. Never heard of it or had a cat around with it. Now it is common just like Lyme disease from ticks and asthma and diabetes. My opinion, I know it is a controversial opinion, but this is university and military lab experimentation leaks.😡

Have a older cat, who always has had a good mouth and teeth for her age. Now recently had a inflamed mouth, and had teeth removed and skin and now some more inflammations what should we do for treatment? Cat grinds her teeth, is this a sign of something else beside being Stomatitis?
