Feeling Small | Photography VLOG #15

#photography #vlog #mist #woodlandphotography
A walk and talk VLOG where I talk a bit about analysing your own work and understanding why it is you shoot the images you do. Feeling small is the theme that I have selected for the images that I show, but you can take many other themes. And then I also praise the book "the inner game of outdoor photography" by Galen Rowels, even though some of the photography gear he writes about is a bit dated.

I agree with your view of the first part of Galen’s book. I interpreted the whole book as divided into roughly thirds with the middle section being much about the application of the first section, with details regarding equipment and such. The last part has a lot to do with the moral and ethical aspects of photography, especially with the type of work that he produced. He is at least as good of a writer as a photographer.

Hey Gary! He and Thom Hogan were friends, and both prolific writers. I have a couple of Thom’s E-Guide books for camera’s. He will often reference Galen on some of his articles on his Website. I appreciate yours and Frederik’s sharing of opinions on Galen’s book. May he RIP. Take care Gary

Hi, and thanks for this. I think it says a lot that he was both photographer and writer on a number of assignments. Makes you wonder what if… He left a lot to enjoy though.

@@garymc8956 You’re Welcome and appreciate the reply, and recognition of Galen’s work. It is rather ironic, as I wonder as well, if for instance his Wife, an accomplished Pilot, had been flying the plane? She may not have been qualified for night flying, but neither was their Pilot, and they crashed and four people lost their lives. 61 too young to die, but we all never know, do we? On a more positive note, please check out ‘ByThom’ and see the free articles he has on Photography. He is a very accomplished Photographer, and he has a fairly constant and up to date page on all that is happening in the Camera world, mainly pertaining to the Nikon brand. I hope Frederik does not mind me mentioning Thom Hogan’s site? Take care Gary!

Thank you Gary, yes, he is a good writer! I did not really notice until you made me aware, but his description of his camera falling due to a failing camera strap he is testing - that is so well written!

Frederik, Congrats on some Snow! How pretty, and thanks for sharing the lovely imagery. We just received a rare 1&1/2” of the white stuff, and it has already started to fade away. Glad you received your copy of the book. Galen was a multi faceted individual. I believe he holds some climbing titles? I had the privilege of a brief encounter/meet with Him, and didnt realize the significance of it until later. Look for me in one of his books. 🤣 I was stationed in California, and a fellow Service buddy and I would climb Mt Whitney, and do various hikes together. Great times but I was too ‘stoopid’ to appreciate it then! May he and his Wife R.I.P. You mentioned gear, and it was said Galen would often be carrying a simple little Nikon film camera, like an N65 or something. Basic, nothing fancy, yet still capture some great images. Hope you're doing well. Take care. 👍🙏✌📷😊

Thank you George! Yes, Galen talks very warmheartedly about travelling light and how light gear is his priority. And that a camera is like clothing - it has to be chosen for the occasion! One thing I learned was how much flash he used in his work and what a master he was with a flash! I can only imagine what he would be able to do with a digital camera today! Take care George!

An addendum to my comment; I was rushed to post my comment as it was Dinner call. At the risk of making myself out to be some great mountaineer (which i am not) We hiked the trail and camped near the summit. Dave and I tried, but never made it all the way up, just a thousand feet shy, due to weather, and in one case, my getting ‘Altitude sickness! (what a wimp).🙄 If you’ve never experienced it, DO use caution hiking up at high elevations. Keep revisiting that ‘little tree,’ Frederik, and keep up these Vlogs! I rather enjoy your ‘ramblings,’ as you say! Best
