People raised small animals for centuries before commercial pellets ever existed. I really appreciate you showing that relying on store-bought feed isn't the *only* way to give rabbits a healthy diet. I also agree that sometimes the convenience of just buying a bag of pellets is perfectly fine. But with inflation, supply chain problems and all of that, I truly think it's important to remind people they might be able to just grow some - or a lot! - of the good nutrition their critters need. Also... regardless of sociopolitical concerns, I'm inherently cheap by nature🤣🤣 So one of my motto is, "seed is cheaper than feed."

Anyone of us who have pets or are raising animals for pets should always question ourselves about "How did people feed their animals before someone made a money maker out of selling foods for those animals?" There hasn't always been animal feeds sold to feed animals, but people have always fed their animals when they had them. We all want to become more self sufficient? Then we all need to think outside the box, for our answers on how to do that. Just an opinion by someone who also had animals and tried to not have to buy all their foods at a feed store, but to feed them off the land first.

Very true! I know a lot of folks demonize the pellet makers but I personally love the convenience and that’s what pellet was made for that’s how I’d define it Pellet-a balanced Rabbit diet created by livestock nutritionist to make the farmers life easier- In many cases raising rabbits isn’t the only thing the owner or farmer raises- I also beekeep and deer hunt and fish for food and grow Fruit and Veges and raise other livestock and love to spend time with family when time allows that. Pellet buys me a little more time. Its funny how are “natural” today has become so distant from what was natural yesterday - I try to do my best to make sure my rabbits want for nothing and sometimes that means growing some extra food for them which isn’t that bad when using comfrey and willow. I always wanted rabbits and chicken In my backyard. Where I live it's not allowed by law for "sanitary" conditions. I had a pretty ruff time as a nurse while the Chinese flu hit and after 2 years of a great fight I finally had to put a knee down. I've in medical leave since February of 2022. And I was so down, sad, depressed.i was at the real real bottom. I was lost. Then I found your channel. You saved me. Take a minute here to read it again. You saved me. After 3 months of darkness and sadness listening ounce a day to your channel. I took the decision to go and get rabbits. That's when my real therapy started. It gave me purposed. Gave me joy for the first time in many months. In the beginning I could spend half my day with my 3 rabbits. I was so happy. Now looking back I can see how you saved me. Tour channel gave me the push I needed and that push has probably change the direction of my life

I started slow with 3 rabbits: 2 does and 1 buck. Now I have 2 does, 2 bucks, 3 kits that are gonna leave for the icyland of freezertown soon. I also went an got myself a beautiful flock of 5 egglaying chickens. I'm finally living the dream I had for so long. Once again, from me and my loving little wannabe farm, THANKYOU Very very much.

I raised rabbits (pet) 15-20 years ago in eastern MN and I just bought 25 new Zealand and new Zealand cross rabbits to start producing meat rabbits (Most of these will be processed). I've been in ND for over a decade and on hubby's family farm for almost 10. Feeling so grateful most everything to feed them is grown right here. When I raised rabbits years ago, pellets were always offered to everyone free choice. I noticed they hardly ate them when supplied with ample variety of forages. I'm seeing this Trend again as I offer alfalfa grass hay, cover crop hay (turnip, radish, red clover, millet, pigeon grass, peas, oats), oats and ample "weeds". Currently everything is running in a colony on a 24' stock trailer, that will change as I get their building built. I have thoroughly enjoyed the information and tips and tricks you have shared on your channel!

I'm thinking to go with colony raising, setting up underground dens so buns can regulate temps and really wishing I could create a very secure very large area, big enough to grow food for them in. Reality will be only about 30'x16'

I wish I had neighbors like you and your Mrs. You take very good care of your animals, come up with ingenious ideas and solutions and always seem to be on the lookout for better ways to do things. Yours is my favorite rabbitry channel.

I watched your video on what to feed and what NOT to feed a while back. I have been giving considerable thought to it. I had always thought that pellets would be the end all answer BUT your video made me think about correctly choosing alternatives. Lo and behold this video brings other options to the forefront. I raise goo gobs of veggies here in N. Arizona. I paid close attention to your caveat of feeding too much veggies because of "runny" droppings. So I thought about using my Excalibur dehydrator for a lot of "cuttings" from peppers and other veggies that cause the problem BUT after drying them I "THINK" that if I mix them in with the pellets that they will eat both and just drink enough water to quench their thirst without any excess liquid entering their system. After drying they will store for a long time after the air is removed from the container. I also think that if the economy has "hiccups" and pellets are in short or NO supply it is a good back-up. Rabbits have saved my sanity too. The care for them is easy. I had a rabbit in high school. Too bad we didn't take it further. 4 decades later, it hurts too much to work my food jobs lifting like I used to, so I helped my daughter's friend on dispatch day. I could handle it easily bc of college biology. Anatomy is very interesting. My life has purpose again. I'm still doing lots of research making up for years lost. Found this Rabbitry Center video tonight. A man who cares to make his rabbits healthy. I did lots of plant research on the weeds in our yard for their edibility. I'm still looking up more. I'm letting them grow INTO the flower beds instead of pulling them OUT. Thank you for making your videos and sharing this knowledge!!!

We did ducks and chickens. The ducks are messy. You have to clean/refill their water and areas daily because they make a mess. Chickens are far easier. Looking to raise rabbits for meat. Feeling overwhelmed. There's a lot to do to get started

Dear sir. I've enjoyed your many useful tips in which I will very soon put into practice and I shall have you to thank for. As I am too raising/breeding rabbits commercially. Cutting to the chase on my main purpose on placing this comment is to also share with you one other plant in which has greatly and historically being practiced to feed rabbits here in Malaysia (along with other neighboring countries here), and that is the Madre de Agua. It contains 21~23% protein on each leaf, it could be planted right of the branch, it could grow up to 12 feet (unless we trim it often) and assuming we prune all the leaves on a say 5 feet tree, the leaves will grow back to full harvest in 2 months. I have planted over 50 plants and am planning to grow triple more in a few months. I hope this information is as helpful to you as it is for me. Once again thank you so much for your great insight. I look forward to try planting a few Weeping Willows, White Clovers and Comfreys

@@Mansahx No. I haven't grown this tree/bush. I'm like you, still in the research stage; looking for alternative feeds.

Also, normally you have a native willow. It's pretty much almost NEVER toxic. When you spread your native willow it helps your beaver populations. Example mine is Salix breweri from Cali. Good for sheep, goats, rabbits, cows.

Thanks for the info on you’re videos. I recently got into rabbity for meat purposes and organically reusing waste biomass. I have two does and one buck of the silver fox varieties. The does are difficult but the buck is sweet and loving. I feed them fresh kale from the garden and leftover strawberries stems/cuttings, frozen celery (due to SoCal heat) and lots of Timothy hay and pellets 16-20% protein. Its been an adventure and my family isn’t ok with breeding for meat consumption but I try to ensure that the buddies (cause they are buddies) get a healthy life and enjoy their lives before sacrificing for our family. Thank you! You should do some videos on recipes that can help promote the value of rabbits as a feed source. My mother used to talk about the depression era and how rabbits helped feed the family. How ever, they’re are many good videos on meal preparation. Thanks again for all your diligence! It’s appreciated.

You need to get yourself a little Japanese style hand grass sickle for collecting those greens. Total game changer. Especially for little short plants like that clover patch you were trying to rip up while saving the roots.

I sure wish I had some Willow trees, but alas, there are none out here in the desert. I tried getting cuttings off of etsy, but they're not really in good shape, just half dead sticks.

We’ll have plenty in a few months if you’re still looking then

Willow leaves are 20% protein. Oak is around 10% protein. Nettle leaves are 38% protein. Bamboo leaves are 22% protein. Comfrey is 26% protein. If you are feeding tree, and shrub forage, you probably don't need to worry about protein.

This is great! Thank you! I have most of those 'weeds' growing all over the place! 🙂 The only willow I have access to is along a nearby river. How is that different from weeping willow? I give my rabbits & my dairy goats mulberry leaves. They love them!! Do you change the amount of pellets given daily when you give them this amount of greens? If you mentioned that, I missed it! The willow by the river is probably a weeping willow (cant be sure)they do well in a damp soil. I keep a small amount of pellet in the feeder( 1/4-1/2cup) but they’ll consume less with supplemental feeding from your property which saves on feed costs. I only add more pellet when the feeder is empty or very low.

I start feeding Rabbits a handful of whole oats on a flat resting board as soon as they are out of the nesting box about three weeks old. They’ll hop over to the J theater and start eating mamas pellet. They stick to 16% pellet, a handful of hay freshwater every 12 hours and a handful of whole oats 2 to 3 times a week

I have learned so much From your videos. I started raising rabbits late in life and found it very hard to skin them. But I did it. 2nd litter all died in the heat and I didnt get another litter in the fall - bc I half hearted bred. But your podcasts keep inspiring me to try again. Don't plant a willow near septic lines. I've cut down a willow and stacked it up to dry only to have a new tree growing out of the pile a month later. You get them started and they're difficult to get rid of which is what you were describing.. I may start a feed plot. I only have 8 rabbits at the moment so it's pretty easy to forage around. Thanks for the great video.

i love watching you!!! :) I never knew that weeping willow was good for bunnies! :) there is no issue with the salicylic acid?? i cut maple limbs for my guys all the time and they love it! Comfrey didn't grow super well for me this year so that really is just a little snack occasionally. Watching you out there picking the plantain and dandelion greens makes me laugh because that is what I do as well!!! :) Thank you so much for teaching us all! God Bless

Feeding greens to young rabbits, if you feed mom grass/greens/etc. throughout the pregnancy and nursing she will have the right gut bacteria, etc. Wouldn't she then pass that on in the milk and cecotropes to her kits?

I agree With feeding mama greens. Weaning rabbits at the right time helps a lot. It’s important for young rabbits to digest mamas cecotropes -You could even say its more important than mamas milk when it comes to digestion capabilities and immune system development. This will help young rabbits digest greens better without negative results. Giving them time to build stomach health before weaning and putting them on a green diet has helped us greatly. The folks we bought our breeding stock from had our 10 week olds in tractors sitting in grass. So I assume they can tolerate leafy greens now? What ratio of leafy greens / Timothy hay / pellets? We have a breeding trio of Newzeland reds.

Hi there! I really enjoy all your videos, well presented! Question: my doe developed a real dry flaky skin and has crusty bumps on the back of her neck. Her diet is similar to what you showed here, is she still missing something? Or does she have mites? Can rabbits get mites? How do I deal with that? And my buck has a constant diarrhea, even if I don't give him greens. But he doesn't have skin issues like the doe. They both have the same diet. I had the buck on medicated feed for a long while for the runs, it didn't change anything. Please help?

If the fresh greens cause diarrhea, does it help to dry greens for a few days (or completely) prior to feeding? Or is it the abrupt change in fiber content rather than the moisture content that causes teh “muddy butt”?

The greens have a lot of water in them which can cause diarrhea and then dehydration -when raising young rabbits if you were to dry your greens like you do hay it would be easier for the kits digestion to stay regular. At 3-4 months old I start to gradually increase the greens. Thanks for asking!

What do you think about feeding rabbits cracked corn. I feed mine pellets, cracked corn, and grass free choice.

It’s a concentrate that is best fed in a separate dish or on a resting board. Some corn is known to have mold in it but as long as you make sure it’s clean. Thanks for asking! Best of luck

How do you keep from getting Cysticercosis(shows up as white spots on the liver) from the wild rabbits? Tried feeding my rabbits from the yard but every time I did we would end up with white spots on the liver. When I stopped the spots stopped. Have had to stick with pellets and hay. I have also had to be picky where I get my hay from.

When I feed off the ground they keep getting reinfected. I feed off the ground they get it. I stop it and feed pellets and hay and it clears up… rinse and repeat. We have a TON of wild rabbits around our property. I think they smell our rabbits and think it’s ok to hang out.

@@epizan I'll feed a handful of greens to my older rabbits in the spring summer and fall I would consider not feeding them from that area or fencing off a small area to prevent the wild life from eating it. Plantain,purslane, dandelion, clover there's terrific feed in the yard.

I’m looking at my Encyclopedia of Country Living by Carla Emery and in the list of not to feed rabbits it has comfrey listed. Is this one we have to limit?

There’s a lot of conflicting information out there. I’m a bit of a rabbit book nerd I see this a lot. I feed all greens in moderation I mix it up in order to feed a variety of nutrients. I love to research but I still field test myself to confirm the information. I feed comfrey with no negative results but it’s only one of many greens I feed. If you’re interested in growing a garden for your rabbits I’d recommend researching Rick Warden‘s Rise and shine website or reading his short book beyond the pellet. You can read this book in a day and it’s specifically written for those interested in growing your own rabbit feed.

Hai, just wanna say that I'm a beginner Rabbit owner in Indonesia... It's a common practice here to mix pellets and greens too. Btw, this morning i just had my first litter from first time doe. 1 of my kits have this nasty red part on its back, can i do anything to help it? And also my doe is acting dangerously near her kits, should i let the kits stay in the same cage/should i seperate them? I find your videos are super helpful. THANKS

What is "Leaning" a willow?

When you purchase your weeping willow they are approximately 75$ and 6’ tall. Plant it and bend it after 2 months the bark will harden and you can grow it in a way to easier access the branches

Should you built rabbit house to keep them in and wire fence and electric fence so they have room to run around and this way they can get stronger and bigger

A lot of folks choose colony raising over cages I personally find it easier to run my rabbitry and keep healthy rabbits and control the breeding when using cages

How do you get your willow tree to lean over please?

Lean them over when the tree truck is only a couple inches thick Use a 4 x 4 or timber to bury 4 feet to the side of it screw a 4 inch screw into the 4 x 4 and tie the weeping willow to the 4 x 4 after leaning it over

I live in Alaska and I would have some small branches for my rabbits to chew on for the winter. We have birch, alder, cottonwood, and spruce. Which would be the best for my rabbits?

I’ve never tried. I’m sure someone has. Have you joined a rabbit Facebook group yet? They’re a terrific place to ask (thousands of rabbit people at the same time)that question and anything else related to rabbits.

We don't get rabbit pellets here in this part of the country . My golden rule is to feed 3 items a day . .. wild grass , boiled rice mixed with dry wheat bran, sweet potatoes leaves or chayote and it's leaves .. some wild edible invasive plants .. and it depends on season of the plant ..winter is toughest when all the plants withers .

@@mayseventy4466 any type of cooked rice and yes, wheat bran or rice bran (not husk) used for animal feed . I have no idea whether wheat bran is edible because I'm from a rice consuming nation. We feed our left over cooked rice mixed with wheat bran .

I've used several different feeds it's important to read the labeling and purchase at least 16% protein and 17 to 20% fiber this is sufficient for growing baby rabbits juniors and seniors as well as nursing doe's. I feed mine a lot of birch and maple water sprouts from stumps left behind when expanding our garden. They love those. I avoid oak, based on what I read somewhere. I give them lots of grass and weeds from the garden. A bit of dandelion and comfrey. After checking to make sure it's OK, I started giving them goldenrod and asters this fall. I've been avoiding docks and sorrel due to high oxalates. Never bracken ferns. And not too much clover because I read it can cause bloating. Thanks for your videos!

Our rabbits do get out from time to time but We chose cages over colony raising to avoid backyard fox, coyote and the many hawks that get our chickens from time to time. It doesn’t happen too often but this way we can let them get their exercise and run in a more safe environment.

The neighbor man let his rabbit run loose, because apparently he couldn't afford rabbit pellets. I felt sorry for it(because it was all white, I knew it wouldn't survive in the "wild") and put it in a spare cage I had. I fed that rabbit whole corn, wheat bred and dried grass clippings(Orchard grass, white and red clover, Plantain, wild carrot). That rabbit thrived. One day I came out and it was gone. Figured that neighbor bought some more pellets, finally.

RHD is very rare. Unless you have a break out in your area, it’s nothing to be concerned about I recommend you run your rabbitry in cages hutches at least 40 inches high off the ground so they don’t come in contact with any wild rabbits that are infected but again it’s very rare. your chances are incredibly slim.

Oats are high in calories so every day isn’t necessary but it helps kits grow and nursing moms with lactation so every few days for those situations would be beneficial

Good day sir I have a question about hay and fresh grass, I noticed when I feed my rabbit with hay they grow faster than when feeding them with fresh grass, is there any scientific explanation for that?

rabbits are built for a high fiber, diet so dried hay should make up about 70% of their diet- their bodies will benefit greatly and digest it easily- fresh green grass has a lot of water Content in it should be considered a treat. especially if the rabbits mother was not eating the grass and providing Cecotropes for the litter, It’s best not to introduce too much too fast rabbits have a very sensitive digestive system - you can also slowly introduce more and more greens over time and less Pellet providing herbs and vegetables would be very beneficial. best of luck and thanks for asking!

a different channel recommend a certain tree as a complete diet rabbit feed i believe they said it was called tangese or something like that. edit i went to check and the actual tree is Tagasaste/Tree Lucerne

I know that cherry bark will kill goats due to the high level of arsenic, I didn't think it would be good for rabbits.

I’d refrain from feeding wilted cherry leaves or dead dying or diseased clippings but we never had a problem with cherry trimmings. We since lost our cherry trees so we stick to pear, apple and willow trimmings.

I am loosing my rabbits. They are fine one day and dead the next. This is grown down to 6 week old. I feed pellets and greens like kale, turnip greens, Timothy Hay or grass hay. Anybody know something to help me? I'm struggling

Did you watch the part about greens and softening there stool. Try not to feed greens this will help them survive. Wait until your rabbits are 3 months old to start feeding greens regularly.

I have read that all parts of cherry are poison to rabbits (fruit and trees). You feed your rabbits trimmings off your cherry trees and they are ok? I would like to be able to feed them my cherry trimmings!

I have also read that feeding chives are poisonous to rabbits as well so I would be very cautious when feeding anything new to your rabbits And try your best to not feed a lot of one thing -try to mix it up and provide a variety. No seeds on the fruit

Wilting or frosted black cherry can have levels of cyanide dangerous for horses, cows and swine. I assume rabbits as well.

Cherry (and some other things, like red oak) are poisonous when the leaves are wilting. They are safe while fresh, and when totally dry; it's the in-between wilting state that is dangerous (because of cyanide).
