I forgot how athletic Nadal was back then. Unreal speed and agility.
for me the amazing thing in this match, is that you can see that a 17 years old rafa, already measures and knows how to handle an important moment of a match, look when he is serving for the match he is breathing slowly, taking his time, fully concentrated, and playing the point to his terms, not waiting for an error, that's just amazing to see.

This video puts the current quality of Alcaraz into perspective. Nadal was a precocious talent with skill and maturity at 17, capable of winning the world number 1 in straight sets. Alcaraz at 18 is a really exciting prospect but since many compare him to Nadal, he's not at the same level Rafa was then.

Miami has never been super fast. It has always been one of the slowest hard court tournaments. Plus Nadal actually liked hard courts in his youth (a 16-year old Nadal said he preferred indoor and grass to clay).
@TheTmat007
4 жыл бұрын
@@J.-M. This talk of "slow court" or "court playing slow" and serves as an advantage to a particular player, is completely nonsensical, in my opinion. Yes, some players (Federer, Nadal and Djokovic, for example) have their favorite or best surface. But these players are also very good on the other surfaces. In fact, it is usually one of these players that would most often defeat the other. The idea that Nadal is just a clay specialist, is asinine. He's had good success on the other surfaces. In fact, Nadal even achieved his Career GS at an earlier age than Federer and Djokovic. Also, Nadal made the final at every wimbledon tournament he entered from 2006 to 2011 (and won the titled twice). And that was before this talk of the wimbledon courts playing slower, was hugely debated. In fact, Matt (Coffee Tennis) presented, in a video, what he claims to be data revealing the Wimbledon courts was slowest from 2012 to present. And he argued that it favors Nadal. I find that statement very foolish. Why? Because since 2012, Nadal hasn't had the success he achieved at Wimbledon in 2006-2011. In fact, in 2012-2017, Nadal performed poorly at wimbledon. And so, if the Wimbledon courts have being slowest from 2012 to 2019 and favors Nadal game, why hasn't he recorded better success there, during that period? And the same goes for Miami. If this court is playing slow (which would explain why Nadal defeated Federer at the venue), why hasn't Nadal had much success there? It's just a hoax. To me, Nadal was just a beast, during his younger years. To the most part, it is injuries that slowed his progress on other surfaces.

The birth of FEDAL. Brings back great memories.
Is amazing young Nadal. Incredible.
Even here you can see that he DEMANDS excellence to beat him. The pressure he applies mentally by asking the other guy to keep hitting good shots, as well as demanding from himself. Essentially his game is to demand that both he and his opponent put on a good and exciting match. Which also explains why he doesn’t take it lightly when someone tries to shush or disrespect the crowd. He probably feels that as players, it’s their job to provide proper and good entertainment. Good thing is that’s not a problem for Federer. He, in his own way, also demands excellence.
No other player could play with such intensity, they would all be retired before 30 but rafa has been doing this for 20+ years. GOAT.
This young rafa is the most gifted youngest player ive ever seen. Holy moly
