For the hair you're experimenting on, are you familiar with Captain Scarlet (old TV show kinda like the Thunderbirds)? Well I found out that they used fine rabbit fur for the hair, sort of like a mini toupee. Now their marionettes are bigger (1/4 scale I think?) and I've not tried it myself but it might be worth a try since you're experimenting anyway.
