FEBRUARY 1968 U.S. AIR FORCE AIR STRIKES IN VIETNAM 24664

Support Our Channel : / periscopefilm
This confidential U.S. Air Force film shows various air strikes in Southeast Asia by F-100s, F-105s, A-1 Skyraiders, and other aircraft. Napalm, cluster bombs, high drag bombs, and other munitions are used as well as cannon. At the 3:45 mark, F-100s are brought in to assist U.S. and friendly ground forces who are under heavy enemy assault. Spotting aircraft can be seen in this footage. At the 5 minute mark, Operation Scotland assaults are seen as part of the Battle of Khe Sanh. At the 8 minute mark, attacks on North Vietnamese Mig-17s are seen including rare air-to-air footage. Operation Fairfax and Operation Saratoga were also supported by strikes seen in this footage.
The Battle of Khe Sanh was conducted in northwestern Quảng Trị Province, Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam), between 21 January and 9 July 1968 during the Vietnam War. The belligerent parties were elements of the United States military III Marine Amphibious Force (III MAF), 1st Cavalry Division, the US Seventh Air Force, minor elements of the South Vietnamese Army (ARVN) against two to three division-size elements of the North Vietnamese Army (NVA).

Odds are certain that these airstrikes killed a lot of people on the ground but by the same token odds are also certain they didn't hit jack shit. The NVA and Viet Cong were so well adapt to moving through the jungle that by the time photos were taken by recce aircraft, missions were planned, fighter jets were dispatched and the area was bombed the NVA and VC were long to hell and gone! About the only thing that was killed were insects and animals.

Cedar Bay, that was precisely the case! Thankfully Nixon FINALLY lifted those idiotic bombing restrictions and in one week's time in late 1972 the US military did more to destroy North Vietnam's fighting capability than in the entire 7 years before. From 1965 to 1972 most of what the USAF, USMC and US Navy did was waste tons of ordinance on targets of either questionable or negligible value while targets that could've been (and should've been) knocked out were off limits. Of course during that period they bombed big targets like bridges but other targets like SAM sites couldn't be touched until AFTER they became operational. That was about the stupidest thing ever and the blame for that can be laid at the feet of Mr. Lyndon Johnson. Of course he did not start the Vietnam war nor did he finish it but his megalomaniac inept clueless leadership caused more senseless unnecessary deaths than anything else. When you go to war you go to war to win and not dilly-dally or tap dance around like some indecisive chicken shit coward!

Don't take this the wrong way because I agree with a lot of what you say, but Johnson left the White House in January 1969 so he most didn't play "tiddlywinks between 1965 to 1972". Also the political situation was very different by 1972 during the LBJ era, but I do wonder what had happened if Rolling Thunder had been more like Linebacker. Johnson was handed a problem in Vietnam that had been mismanaged by others pretty much since the end of the second world war, he then tried to protect an ally which was on its knees from an aggressive invading neighbour, he tried to keep the death toll down by avoiding a confrontation with China / Soviet Union which would have made the Vietnam conflict look like chicken feed in comparison. He made a lot of mistakes, but he doesn''t deserve the bad press he gets and I have to disagree with many of your disparaging remarks about him.

The US is still there to create stability (which is really just springing up a puppet state) and is very successfully killing terrorists. The middle eastern wars are designed to never send, it’s called the military industrial complex. My point about Vietnam is that it wasn’t a military defeat, but a political one. They never invaded North Vietnam, nor did they try, but the north tried multiple invasions on the south, all failing (until the US left). The North was never able to launch a successful military campaign against the US in that war that ended in a military victory for Vietnam, only a propaganda one.
