So turns out it's pretty hard to get a video out on time around the holidays!~ CORRECTIONS/DISCLAIMERS -I guess this is technically a video made by a 20 year old cus I turned 20 while making it. -Some of the portraits are entirely fictional 9:06 - Qishan was not put to death and was eventually pardoned.

Mostly cause your teachers have a set curriculum they have to teach, and this guy can make a video on any topic he wants. You’re still in school so you don’t get it, but there’s a major difference between a youtuber and a teacher. But also, you’re clearly looking things up to learn further outside of the classroom. That’s good, but it’s obvious why you’re learning more because you choose to do so. It’s like if I went to Wikipedia to read some historical articles and went “wow Wikipedia is teaching me more than my teachers are.” Like yeah no shit cause you’re choosing to further your education on your own. And I can almost guarantee you’re doing that because history peaked your interest in school.

But when I was younger, I was just a brat who just wanted to just pass the class and play COD4 (and every subsequent sequel after that). I used to blame my teachers for a poor to mediocre education, but looking back at it now, my own lack of passion for history at the time has allowed me to forget most of what I learned. Going through college has made me appreciate the fact that learning done under my own initiative is more fulfilling.

When reading Julia Lovells 'The Opium War', I honestly found it unbelievable how many times the Emperor and his court were: 1) Entirely lied to about how the war situation was going by generals and officials scared to be killed if they told the truth (fun fact: during that first capture of Canton, Qishan was basically the first person to say that the British had won any battles, probably a large part of why he was put to death); and 2) entirely unaware of geopolitics and smugly assured of Imperial supremacy, like during a late stage of the war the Daoguang Emperor had to demand maps and an explanation of who the hell these 'British' were.

I know you just remade the video, but I would have talked about the discontent with the Qing and the Qing's defeat helped fuel the Taiping rebellion. The Taiping rebellion was an enormous conflict where more potentially more Chinese died than World War One, and it's often forgotten in the West. It was briefly mentioned as instability at 12:40 but it jumped to the West demanding more, and I believe it deserves a mention.

@@beachass I ask again, are you ok? I think I added "a few books" as well. I've of course used other sources to not only confirm but to expand on the details on the videos that were summarized in short 10-20 min videos that cumulated over a century of information....I felt that was kinda obvious "expert" or no the kid was right and it was proven true when my paper was judged on accuracy. Don't get too caught up on the attitude that the only legitimate information that exists in the world is one that has a famous name attached you'll miss out on many nuanced perspectives of life. Funny enough on many of the books I read didn't speak on as far back as these "non experts" did. Thanks, for the props tho, it couldn't have been done without my fellow "non experts" who are like myself trying to find truth in the mix of post-Colonialism propaganda, straight up misinformation, and general inconsistent information. Always cite your sources!
