Big for an asian elephant, average for african
Adult elephants have excellent control of their prehensile trunks, so this one was quite capable of simply taking the food from the hand of the woman offering it. Yet it chose instead to twist the end of its trunk and present the flattened underside, allowing the woman to place the food there. Given the intelligent of elephants I am left wondering if it perhaps picked up on not just the woman's intent, but her hesitancy, her nervousness, and so chose to accept the food in a manner designed to be non-threatening

There are a few wild elephants on this Sri Lankan road that behave this way. They are generally NOT a threat. Unfortunately, people have spoiled them by offering food. As a result of that, they associate food with vehicles and are now DEMANDING it from every passing vehicle. Every vehicle needs a bunch of bananas or sugarcane for safe and hassle-free passage! Consider it as a "protection" toll :))

It's actually bad for a wild animal to learn that humans are their friends. They aren't. Humans are dangerous, and fear and aggression is wise and healthy. You want poachers luring innocent ellies to their deaths with treats (and large weapons)?
People need to know that animals have moods too. That woman survived on a 50 percent chance.
Big guy was just having a bit of fun with the passing vehicles - when you're that size, you could do a lot worse if you wanted to. Kudos to the woman (it's a wild animal after all) but treats could just encourage them.

@tobiaszpasterski481

Elephants are wise and intelligent, they recognize intentions. But people mistakenly believe and think that they are beasts driven by the lust to kill. Anyway, what people don't come up with. They also created myths about gorillas. People, especially civilized people, do not feel nature, do not interact with it, do not correlate, so they have such an opinion. Their unjustified fear, misunderstanding transforms into panic hostility, exaggeration, exaggeration, reluctance and extreme distance. You have to understand nature. The biggest threat is t mothers with calves and young males with testosterone stimulated to aggression. Plus elephants kept in captivity. But people have it that if they don't understand something, they're scared, they're terrified. Just like with spiders. People have much fobies.

Animals pick up on anxiety. Her calm manner slow approach not getting too close. Reassured the Elephant that she is a friend. They are really smart.
The Elephant knows ,If i could choose a best mate .An Elephant would win hands down
I bet she’s a very nice woman. Bless her heart.
Elephants are extremely intelligent animals. While her move was risky, Elephants have the size edge and they know it. They can also sense if the intention was going to be threatening or friendly and it clearly saw and accepted her Bananas gift right from her very hand, a calm reaction from the animal that would have never happened if the Elephant would have seen her as a threat from afar

Extremely intelligent doesn't mean extremely wise... Humans are extremely intelligent aren't they. An elephant may have hundreds a reason to do not like humans, they have an extremely good memory, so even if the woman seems calm and friendly the elephant could crush her if he is not in the good mood, as intelligent he is

@Kilo Bacon n Eggs Oh, really? I thought it meant living at the edge of something. No, Captain Obvious, I'm talking about using the word "edge" in a grammatically correct way. Some correct ways: The elephant has the edge in terms of size / when it comes to size. In size, the elephant has the edge. Elephants have an edge over humans when we consider size. But, writing such as: "You don't have the intelligence edge." is incorrect. Too much bacon & eggs, perhaps?

@Kilo Bacon n Eggs It isn't, in terms of semantics. I'm not sure you understand the idea of a competitive edge. Taking offence quickly doesn't put one in an advantageous position, therefore the idea of an edge cannot be applied in that context. For instance, in terms of semantics, it's incorrect to say that older humans generally maintain the edge over younger ones in terms of poor health. Thank you for yet another display of your [insert euphemism for idiocy].
No matter how feeble it may be it is good to see animals protesting against destructing of their habitate .

not really,.. the elephant has learned people = food. Then like a highwayman robber. It starts to harras people on the street or in cars. Kinda like goverments, when you realy start to think about it, But yeah.. there used to be enough space for all creatures to coexxist.

I agree. We dont know for certain why they are behaving like that but I think elephants are pretty smart and they must had some good reason, it could be related to their habitat.

I worked with the Zoological department for five years and I can confirm that elephants have unpredictable nature. It can attack you without any reason, being a huge animal, they want their dominance over everything.

This particular elephant is in Habarana Sri Lanka, and was conditioned into accepting food by Tourists. Now the elephant doesn’t allow anyone to cross with paying a fee of food, creating the scenarios seen in the video on a daily basis.

Elephants are beautiful, amazing beings. It's natural that we'd want to gift them with food, and to get so close. But there's a reason we're always told never to feed wild animals. The clips of elephants pushing vehicles demonstrates why.
OH! That brought on the goose bumps! IMO, she did risk her life and possibly the people she was with but succeeded because she took her time, posed no real threat yet showed she was scared of the massive animal. The elephant had to have known all of this by 1:25. I won't lie, I was scared for her safety as she walked back to the car but it ended wonderfully. Maybe that's all the elephant wanted was a treat offered with respect?
He's never going to leave the rode now.
We, humans are literally living in their space. Over crowding and pushing the limits of the world in which we are supposed to care for. We only have one world 🌎. We must try to create a better environment for the next generation of animals and humans.

They are living in our space now. Survival of the fittest. We could off all of them in one day if we wanted. We're the boss, they live or die at our pleasure. Humans rule, not animals! Maybe insects, but not animals.

They are super intelligent, but also emotional. If they're acting aggressive it's because history has taught them to be. But they're also smart enough to recognize help sometimes.

I used to work around elephants. People think they can all be riden on and fed. But they are also huge and can accidentally or intentionally crush someone. They can get very territorial and pissy too. She's really lucky.

Accidentally crush someone? Probably no. Even though their bodies are enormous, they have perfect control. If they didn't have such control, their young would die since the little ones mostly live under their bellies and bump into legs often.

@tinkerer67 you've never been in a stall with one, or loaded one for transport, or sedated one for a procedure and they start waking up early and try to stand up while swinging their trumps around. And the bond between mother and calf is a whole different thing. She knows where the calf is and will exhibit protecting behavior. Getting bumped can be like getting hit w a tractor depending on their size.

The reversing of the elephant at the end shows mark of respect. They are hungry to & at times are just looking for quality food, not that they cause us harm, they just want our quality food lol, by ramming the vehicles looking for quality food lol. The woman is kind & the Nellie's know this.
Clearly not the same elephant that was attacking the busses but still fair play to her.

In this scenario, even if the elephant attacks the person we can never blame the elephant .Every animal is protective about their territory and boundaries. We must learn to respect that. And this video needs to be removed, she might be even an experienced person but we don't want others to show heroism by seeing this.

Well the problem is probably that people started feeding them and now they associate humans with food. That's one reason to never feed wild animals. They'll start demanding it and might even become dependent.
