We once rescued one of these from the street. Nobody claimed him - we hung signs - but he would NOT stay in our yard. He chose an old veteran neighbor of ours some four blocks away as His Person, kept getting out and heading straight to his house, so he ultimately went to live with him permanently, lived out his days there. Opinionated little buggers - they only like certain humans, and they do what they want!

I had a friend in college with a schipperke and it was about the smartest dog I've ever seen - only it used all of that cleverness for mischief! He was fully capable of complex and long-term planning, up to and including breaking out of his house, figuring out where the college was, figuring out where my friend was, breaking into the building, and attending class while sitting on his owner's lap. It's pronounced "SKEHperkeh", or "SKEHperkin" in Flemish. My uncle, a Flemish farmer, had one. The dog would go fetch him at the local tavern when it was time to come home, and he got a little dish of beer on the bar as his reward. "kin" or "keh" at the end of a name is a term of endearment meaning "little", like "ito" in Spanish. For example, my older family members called me "PAULehkin" or PAULehkeh" growing up.

It's like people who Call Vizsla's (Vizzzla) when it's pronounced Vi-SH-la. I once had a conversation with a lady about my Vi-SH-la (Vizsla) who wasn't physically with me at the time, only to have her realize by the end of the conversation that she had the same breed of dog and I was pronouncing it differently than her. The entire 15min convo she thought I was talking about a different breed😅.

Great breed but not for first-time dog owners. They are confident inquisitive, strong-willed and very protective. They are also big love bugs -- very affectionate with their family.

While that is somewhat true the two languages have only recently started separating and most flemish people stil say they speak dutch the biggest differences are how the g is pronounced and many sayings are different however an old word like schipperke most definitely has its origins in dutch though i will admit it is also part of the freisian language so i wouldn't know which one was first

@@pickelswithanxiety758 the thing is that english doesn't roll r's and it doesn't use the back of the throat like g or ch do in dutch/flemish so it's never going to come out right in english.

Gorgeous pup, not bad for a first groom. I have never in my Dutch life heard this breed refered to as 'shi-burger' , Dutch say SKIH-pur-keh and my American friends say SKIP-er-key. Curious where this guidance of shi-burger comes from! Nah, who cares - puppy is cute no matter what he's called :)

When we first met them we called them Pomeranians and thankfully the owners told us a few times how to say it (at least the North American way 😂 if they said it the actual way I would not have been able to google it) They definitely have JUST as much attitude as this little guy tho!

My Rottweiler let's me cut his nails... But only if I bribe him with his dinner... I cut one nail, you get dinner. You don't let me cut your nails, no dinner. I tried medication, it made him cranky, drowsy, but cranky. Ever try to cut a cranky Rottweiler's nails? Not happening! The vet tried, didn't happen without total sedation. Sedation is not worth risking his life, just for shorter nails. So the dinner trick works for us. Besides, at 140 pounds (10 stone), he can afford to skip a meal or two out of stubbornness. 💖🌞🌵😷

Oooommmmmgggg, I have a girl named cola and she is 7😭. I recused her during COVID season when she was 5 from a lady who had another of the same breed she loved more that was 7. She brought her to my house kept saying “you can’t just kennel her”, “oh don’t worry you can just put her in the kennel”. I mean my creator that was all she would talk about. She would even talk about how cola would want cuddles and her husband would give her some at night but, “she would just keep wanting more”. She brought her to my STUDIO APARTMENT one day, and the last thing she said before I shut my door in her face forever was, “do you think she knows I’m leaving her?”. I said yes and closed the door. Never heard another word from her and cola will be 8 this year. It’s safe to say she gets all the cuddles she wants, it’s clear she has been abused, but I do not kennel her unless maintenance must come in and even then they love her. She’s loud when other people come in 😂 but she just wants some cuddles.
