Fear of Hell | Teddy - Gainsville, FL | Atheist Experience 22.06

The Atheist Experience episode 22.06 for February 18, 2018, with Matt Dillahunty and Don Baker.
Call the show on Sundays 4:00-6:00pm CDT: 1-512-686-0279
We welcome your comments on the open blog thread for this show.
► freethoughtblog...
KZread comments are at present disabled in our channel, to the displeasure of some. However, each video has a prominent link to the associated open thread that appears on our blog. In the past we've tried opening up the channel to comments, but we found that a very high number of episodes wound up being flooded with a combination of spam, long winded apologists, and various obscene or misogynistic comments directed at various hosts by people with an axe to grind. This seems to be the nature of KZread comment sections, in our experience.
We do moderate the blog, the same way that we moderate chat during the show, as well as comments on our Facebook group. For comment sections that are "officially" associated with our show (and, to a much lesser extent, channels that may give the unintended appearance of being official), we prefer not to play host to straight up ad hominem attacks and bigotry. As a general policy we do not block commenters simply on the basis of disagreement with our point of view. However, we do prefer discussion environments that don't actively chase off more reasonable contributors.

WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?
The Atheist Experience is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

It takes time. I was terrorised by my grandmother that raised me with tales of hell and the end of the world. It took me a very long time, but I can honestly say I have no fear now. Napoleon, just take your bike off some sweet jumps and enjoy your tots!

Yeah it took me nearly a decade, but I honestly don't really give it much of a consideration any more. It is a scary concept, and if it's hammered into your brain from birth, it's a pretty hard notion to shake. The more I just live my life, the less I think about these things, and the less of an effect they have on me

ddude apologetics is defined as reasoned arguments or writings in justification of something, typically a theory or religious doctrine. This is a little ignorant of you. You clearly were not raised by a religion that indoctrinates you from birth in thinking that every wrong move you make, can send you into torture for all of eternity. Indoctrination is one of those things that only sound arguments and alot of time can defeat; and even then, you take it with you in all that you do. This fear follows you everywhere you go, and in everything you do. One does not simply shake off indoctrination by saying "just keep busy". It's not like trying to shake a bad breakup. I honestly never comment on KZread but your words really resonated with me. The fear of hell is an exhausting and consuming fear to have. It's something that is a personal struggle for me for a long time. The wish for the fear to just go away so I can get on with my life, the uncertainty that keeps me stuck because I can't know for sure, the back and forth between thinking it might be true and then it's ridiculous to think it's true. The fear of hell is a probably the primary thing holding many back. It was for me. It wasn't until I lost my belief in hell by moving to universalism that I was even able to consider the entire thing was BS. A key point for me was the realization that many early church fathers were universalist and did not believe in a hell, not only that but the jews never had a concept of a hell, nor was it actually ever mentioned in the old testament. Once I realized the old testament never mentioned hell, I realized there was no way god would leave that part out. The house of cards began crumbling soon after. On a side note, being born and raised fundamentalist baptist, and actually even preached on one occasion, when I first came across this channel, I despised Matt. But the constant logical arguments were very instrumental in my becoming an athiest. Thanks Matt.

Cause we just don't beleive in it as such as they don't fear hell of our religion. All are just stories and had few purposes at the time.

You can go your whole life without really confronting issues like death and what may be on the other side. I don't think this is paranoia at all; it's pure anxiety. You can't say he's on the verge of a schizophrenic breakdown. Being in a similar place before myself I would actually argue that this man is in the depths of an anxiety disorder and should get some help because it's extremely difficult to drag yourself out of it. A person in such a position has to train themselves to change their relationship to their own thoughts and Matt was hitting on a very crucial point, and to expand on it: It's important to not just take the beliefs of others but also to identify your own thoughts as just thoughts and not your beliefs. This is not a normal sense of anxiety that is about things in life and things that could end it. It is a much further spanning anxiety that encompasses perceived experience after life. To feel this way is to fear infinitely; such a huge burden and it must be so hard to even entertain an idea such as hell being true while living with such an existential dread. This is why he was searching, he's looking for a reason not to feel the way he does. In the anxiety-ridden headspace, it's extremely hard not to entertain ideas and go their furthest corners even if you don't fully believe them. Fear, in essence, is a little irrational because it's there to protect us from what may or may not be in the moment. In the end and in my own experience dealing with similar places. The best thing is to think in a logical way, get help with the anxiety and deal with other stressors in your life because they can manifest in ways like this. It's also important to think and contemplate; Life, in essence, is change, change is the passage of time, experience is change. When you realize this then you can start to understand that ideas such as hell or heaven or even purgatory are in essence lifeless. Without the comfortable blanket of ascribing to a belief and cementing yourself to it like a life boat. One really has to contemplate and shed a lot of these barbaric ideas from ones mind. I wish this man all the best and assure him he is safe from eternal torment after death.

I am in Teddy’s position. I spend hours examining debates and the evidence and arguments always lean towards non-belief, the fear just doesn’t leave, at least not for long. The system Christians have constructed makes it so hard to forget 100% because you can be damned for the smallest thing and are constantly told that you’re being deceived or you’re a fool and that possibility is something I haven’t been able to shake.

Coupled with the fact that my brain doesn't have a good handle on the ability to derive thoughts into words. If im debating with an intelligent religious person. Im speechless every time. I appreciate that a cognitive approach to helping someone like Ted is vital, but it sometimes takes more time to shift the emotional sting from long held beliefs. A good question for Teddy might have been: "Why now?" Why has Teddy started experiencing such fear now? Is there something else unrelated in his lufe that is causing him anxiety? A counsellor or therapist might have been a good move.

@: You recognise the causes of your illness and your obvious unhappiness. You despise them - and yet you continue to embrace them. Don't fear hell - there is no such thing. It was invented by humans to frighten people when all other methods of persuading them to be "good" - to conform to their beliefs and standards - had failed. Over the centuries, generations of inadequate, screwed-up, hysterical virgins and sexually dysfunctional authoritarians have used it to cling to power while devising more and more terrifying fantasies about eternal torment to sustain the idea. These people are part of a death cult. They hate and fear life and can't wait for it to end. Their evil plan has obviously worked with you - but you don't have to join them. Life is for living, loving, learning and laughter - and all the evidence points to one fact: you get only one shot at it. So embrace it - there is so much awe, joy and wonder to be found in this world if you open your eyes to it. Don't waste your life worrying about the sick fantasies of these sad, deranged peddlers of fear and despair. They want to ruin your life because their own lives are filled with delusional and irrational nonsense. I can only wish you good luck and happiness.

@ - you CAN choose what you believe. After all, you weren't born a believer. Just examine the evidence, beginning with no suppositions. When I was twelve years old I was being tipped for a life as a missionary in west Africa. I'd done very well in national scripture examinations and the church I'd grown up in had links wirh Ghana. So I decided that if that was what I was going to do, I'd better read the bible from beginning to end. As a result, by the age of thirteen I was an atheist. No honest person can swallow the bible's hypocrisy and inconsistency, its misogyny, its cruelty and its stone age savagery and immorality without misgivings and then incredulity.

Like a lot of people who go through a lengthy self de-programming from religion that was stuffed into my head from birth, I threw out a lot of specific things in the Bible long before I threw out belief in God and Jesus. So by the time I became an atheist, I had already been decided for years that I didn't believe in Hell. So that wasn't my struggle. My struggle was to stop cherrypicking what to believe and what not to, and just admit that I had no valid reason to believe any of it.

I feel bad for that guy, holy crap what religion can do to people who aren't even christian. He is emotionally gullible, but he isn't unique in that lots of people are afraid of hell, and that's christianity's best threat to keep people believing and blindly obedient.

I hate the fact that a significant portion of Christian's main reason for believing is a fear of hell that was put into them as little children...
