Fear and Survival: Being LGBTQ in Iraq - BBC World Service
For Iraq’s LGBTQ+ community, life is difficult and dangerous. In a society that sees itself as modest, traditional and deeply religious, many refuse to believe in anything other than heterosexuality. Being gay or non-binary doesn’t break any laws, but people in these groups still live in fear.

Every day the community faces physical violence, or even the fear of being murdered if their secret is uncovered. Sexual assaults are also common, and the toll on their mental health is severe.
BBC journalist Anna Foster meets three young LGBTQ+ people in Iraqi Kurdistan and hears about the abuse they’ve experienced and their hopes for the future. In a place where many people believe society is changing and modernising, that’s far from the reality for them.
Correspondent: Anna Foster
Senior producer: Stephanie Constantine

Watching from South Africa with tears in my eyes. We not free until we all free. Love is love, you're valid your Enough. You exist.
I can't believe you are asking people, who are already in great danger, the question if they are being physical in a park or not! They live in this conservative religious community that violently rejects the LGBT+ community. This is a terrible question to ask, its very irresponsible and brings harm to the LGBT+ community. BBC should be more careful putting people in risk in such conflicted environments.

@christopherhitchens163

@@sayantanghosh they in that sentence does not make sense, but they is both plural and non plural. There does need to be a better word for non binary. For example, there are often times when you may not be able to distinguish a man from a women (you can find men with extremely feminine facial features (androgynous)). Someone might say: “do you see that man?/women? over there” instead of saying: “man or women” there must be a word which indicates a lack of info on the persons gender etc. The phrase non binary often can now be exploited by adding addition person characteristics. For example people could say: “oh stop being such a straight cis Caucasian male etc etc etc” I could add a few things I would like to be addressed as but that would destroy the English language How am disrespecting her? She will take offence when I do not use the language properly. I am offended when the language gets trashed
@sayantanghosh
2 жыл бұрын
@@christopherhitchens163 you're already disrespecting them by assigning them a 'gender' they do not identify with and in this case it's 'her'. I agree there's no better word for NB people but I also do not see any issues regarding using "they/them" in this case. English is my 2nd language, which means I had to learn it from scratch. So I have always seen books, articles etc. using "them/them" instead of he/his or she/her and they do not seem to 'disrespect' the language whatsoever. Languages should be versatile and evolve with time to be more inclusive so that people can accept it whole heartedly, and in this case just a little tweak. My first language is Bengali and I have to say there is no gendered pronoun in it, which makes it a Lil bit easier for NB or Trans people to be themselves and I couldn't be more happy. English should be like this, since it is spoken all over the world! P.S.: Pespect people, not a communication medium

Persecution has any forms of expression and not only in Iraq. Even in a safer country, gays are still stigmatized and hated. Everywhere, having to act as straight as possible for protection. So we don't lose family, friends, jobs, status etc.... The threat is still very real. How many times have I heard homophobic jokes or comments and had to act as though I wasn't bothered? How many times have people lied and lead a double life? It's haunting, tiring, it's existence until we find a group or area where we feel safe, where we don't have to pretend what we're not. The daily message we receive every time we have to hide is that of shame. Do you think an employer in Canada will admit to firing someone over sexual orientation? Of course not, because it's illegal to do so. They'll make up some phony story about your poor performance or not being agreeable with others to let you go. You have no way of proving that it's a wrongful dismissal. They'd have to be recorded saying it. It happens all the time. So there are laws that mention it's illegal to discriminate..... sure.... but it's disguised and still happens. Just as racism is still very real. It's just disguised so people won't be charged by law. It's everywhere. Iraq is more outward with it. Canada is hidden but very active in discriminating.

Do people really have nothing better to do. Exactly! It’s not a crime to be gay in Iraq. All those murderers should respect the law of their country for a bit and stop killing everyone they assume is different.

Guys I'm telling from a teenager pov It's not about being lgbtq there's children Old men, old women, young men and women (they are straight) got killed in the cruelest way ever so it's not just about being lgbtq OK.
Who in hell could care? There's a lot bigger shit going on in the world. No sympathies that someone's unpopular decision is causing them trouble.

@@brianellison3525 you’re denying pretty much a proven reality. But setting that aside for a bit. Let’s assume it was an unpopular choice. So what? If someone dresses weirdly, it’s an unpopular choice. You’d be weird to say they deserve to die. But once it’s about sexuality, then why not kill a kid that you think is gay? Logic at its finest
