Your DRZ will just sit in the corner now until you sell it. It is 20 year old tech. The 12 tooth front sprocket is a cheap mod, but will wear itself and the chain out very fast. A better solution is to buy a 50 tooth bimetal rear sprocket and use the 14 tooth for dual sport and a 13 tooth for harder terrain. It only takes a couple minutes to swap. The bigger counter sprocket helps with reducing vibration. A clutch weight is inexpensive, simple to install, and really helps with the low speed stalling issue. Pairing the Rekluse Left Hand Rear Brake with the Rekluse autoclutch will instantly improve most riders performance in hard enduro situations. The Pros will do better with the stock clutch. The LHRB is magic in the gnar. The 500/501 is the ultimate one bike solution. As to reliability, I have over 500 hours on my 2021 KTM 500 XCF-W, mostly in second gear steep and nasty singletrack. It has been perfect. I haven’t even checked the valve clearances. I just change the oil and filters every 20-25 hours and replace brakes and tires as needed. A spare rear wheel is a really useful upgrade. That way you can have both a gummy knobby like the VE 33S and a harder D/S tire like a D 606 mounted up and ready to go. Have fun with your new Husky. The 501 is a fabulous motorcycle that can take you anywhere.

Sadly, this could be true for the DRZ. As much as I love it’s simplicity and reliability, it’s performance pales in comparison. I wasn’t aware of there being issues with the 12t primary, it’s very popular for the big bores out here in Idaho. I may have to look into the bigger counter sprocket though. It is very easy to get into technical terrain out here, so I will keep my bike primarily geared for single track type riding. You hit the nail on the head though, I’ve had many bikes, and this one is by far my favorite. The 2 maps and traction control on the GET ECU makes it like having 2 completely different bikes all in one. Map 1 is wide open fast or street riding, and then when it gets to slower technical 20-30mph max riding, map 2 retains all the torque and spreads out that linear power to make it even more usable. Did 126 miles on it yesterday hitting everything from technical single track, to two track and fire roads with some pavement connections and it was flawless. I’d love to get a spare set of wheels to throw on there for convenience, but until then I think I will likely go with the goldentyre fatty front and gt333 rear with HD tubes. I was thoroughly impressed with its road manners for the 20 or so miles it did yesterday, but definitely not something that you’d want to do 100 miles of pavement on. A Scott’s stabilizer with a BRP dampener is surely in the near future. Thanks for your input, I love getting helpful and practical feedback from other 500/501 owners! 👍🏻

Great video! I subscribed liked and now leaving you a job well done! I much prefer a 4t bike to a 2t bike. I sold my 300 about 5 years ago and went to a 450 XC F that I had converted to a 6 speed, and plated in AZ. I used that to ride Dual Sport, Competed in Trials on it, raced KIng of the Motos and even Ebdurocross! I sold that and bought y500 EXC. I found your channel form the comments you left today! Thanks brother! I appreciate the information and knowledge you’re putting out. It’s crazy how much push there is for the 2t market, when there are so many capable 4t’s being produced. Different strokes for different folks I suppose 😎 I love riding a good 2 stroke in the technical stuff, but the versatility of some of these thumpers is unmatched. Loving this 501. You’re gonna love that 500 if you’re familiar with the 450. Not as quick to rev but pulls to the moon with perfect linear power. Thanks for stopping by, I’ll be following you along on your journey as well 👊🏻

pro tip- best mod i’ve done for my fe501 is a second rear wheel. i have the stock rear wheel set up with a harder DOT tire/heavy duty tube and stock chainring. second rear wheel is set up with a mousse, sticky tire, and 50t chainring. easy wheel swap switches the bike from dual sport to single track mode. second best mod is a JD fuel tuner to fix the first gear fuel cut issues with the factory lean tuning. have fun dawg! it’s a hell of a machine. i’ve done multi-day camping trips off of mine, and (almost) kept up with two strokes on PNW single track.

That’s a solid suggestion for the opposite wheel sets. I may have to go that route in the future if I do more road mileage. I’d love to be able to swap a true gummy on the rear for the gnarly stuff and have a DOT tire for the longer rides. I got a full Taco Moto ECU on this thing shortly after I got it. It has 2 map switches and 10 level traction control. I will do a short follow up video breaking that down and my impressions of it, because it’s DOPE. It’s like having 2 bikes in 1 with the ability to fine tune the fueling and power delivery on the fly.

@@IdahoDualSport208 yeah! I think there’s another comment saying something about dropping to 12t in the front messing things up, and idk about that but having two wheels with different chainrings is a helluva lot easier than swapping front sprockets. stoked to hear you’re sorting out the fueling. you can do no wrong with the taco moto ecu, all my homies who work at mosko run those and they’re killer. I only got the JD kit cuz I didn’t wanna pay an extra $600 or whatever. plus it fixes the fueling issue, adds some power, and I’m happy with it currently. might go full ECU in the future but idk. only other thing I noticed on yours- having a skid plate that covers the linkage is really nice, but you’ll know when it’s time for that upgrade 😂. the first time you put a little ding in the linkage from a rock…yeah. and don’t get an AXP skid plate. I have one, it does the job but I hate it. molecule or sxs probably the way to go. honestly it’s nice that the aftermarket supports these things so well, but they are so capable straight from the showroom floor. mods are fun but seat time is invaluable. the more you ride it the more you figure out what it really needs/doesn’t need. such a great bike, so stoked for you.

@campfather I have heard a few guys claim the 12t front ruins chains and rear sprockets a lot faster, but I have yet to see there be any factual proof of this. And I could only see that being the case if you were running high speeds often and for long periods with that setup. The 12t really turns it into a singletrack weapon, but the idea of having two separate wheel setups is very appealing. Someday I will look into going that route. You’re spot on with fixing the fueling. It doesn’t matter which flavor you choose, as long as you choose one. I have buddies with the JD, Vortex, and Athena. They’re all legit. The benefit of the GET is all the tech features it comes with, but you do pay for it! I’m also 100% a firm believer in full coverage skid plates, and a big fan of SXS. I hated my sherco stock AXP plate. That will happen before too long as well, I have learned the value in having linkage coverage 😅 I love having the strong aftermarket support with the KTM/Husqy platform. So many quality components to choose from. I am in that exact frame of mind now - just get on the bike and ride it. I will add pieces as time goes on. Stabilizer, bigger tank, full skid plate, and I’m sure I’ll find another million things. But it’s SO good in stock form after fixing the fueling. Very impressed with the stock suspension, too. I’m a huge Mosko fan and will be getting the R40 for this bike before hitting the ORBDR next year 😎

Welcome my friend 👊🏻 thank you for the kind words. The FE350 is another great machine. Husqvarna really makes an amazing bike. The 501 is a really great all around bike. It’s not intimidating and very usable in terms of its power delivery. After spending some quality time on it, I can say it’s the most versatile bike I’ve ever ridden. Super comfortable to cruise fire roads with the kids, dual sports with the best of them, and if you watch my recent video - hangs in the single track with the enduro 2 strokes. The 350 will likely be less tiring than the 501 in the technical stuff, but you can really ride the 501 lazily when you want to, which is really nice. Good video, appreciated the insight. I currently have a '23 TE300 TPI which I love, it's an amazing trail bike, but I find myself missing the ability to dual sport, especially since I live in Oregon and there's no way to plate my bike here. I'm considering swapping to get a 20-23 FE501S... Now that it's been a few months, do you miss the 2t? Do you think the 500 is any less fun and is it still decent on moderate singletrack? I also hate the vibrations on the one I've been able to ride, it's so annoying and hand numbing that I would definitely have to invest in some dampened bar mounts and pegs...

  • @IdahoDualSport208

    @IdahoDualSport208

    6 ай бұрын

That’s exactly the boat I was in. As much as I loved my 2t, it wasn’t versatile enough - even with a second bike in the garage. That being said, I sold both bikes once I got the 501 and had enough time to realize this bike does everything I want it to, minus longer adv rides. I’ve taken it on the tight singletrack with the 300 smokers, and I’ve done 250 mile days smashing short sections of pavement connecting trails in the mountains. It’s a blast to ride and I love it more than I could have ever imagined. It is a very light bike for its size and the vibrations are rough for extensive road riding. I ride 90%+ off-road so this isn’t a huge factor for me. I swap out the 14/50 gearing to 12/50 when I’m really riding technical and tight terrain in the mountains. It would be more ideal to have a second set of wheels, but it’s a cheap and fast fix to swap the front sprocket if I know the riding demands it. Overall, I’ll never not have a 500 in my garage again - it’s that good and I thoroughly look forward to riding it every time I’m not on it. If you can find a decent deal on a low hour bike, I’d go for it.

  • @IdahoDualSport208

Also, seat concepts seat was a must. Helps the vibrations a ton, as does balancing the wheels and putting in UHD tubes. That alone made it tolerable enough for me to hit 10-20 miles of pavement at a time.

Should've sold the DRZ and kept the Sherco. The 500 is a great sister bike to the Sherco but it is not a replacement. The 500 is a monster in the woods, way too much in fact, but it'll be good on the forest road sections.

Hindsight, that would have been ideal - but I was looking to only keep 1 bike, and the 501 has really impressed me with its ability. I will eventually purchase another mountain dedicated 2 stroke, but I’ve been very pleased with the Husqy and how it’s performed. With a 12t front I can ride most of the singletrack I was riding on the Sherco. Not as forgiving on the bottom end, but the best 4 stroke I’ve ever ridden in those conditions. It will be the perfect sister bike for a mountain single geared bike in the future! Thanks for watching and leaving some feedback 👊🏻

When did TNM start offering the small side mount signals? I still have the round rings that clip to the forks, while they work I am not a huge fan of that design. I guess I need to reach out to Dan about this. My '23 500 hasn't been as stall happy as my 450L before it but I think a GET ECU is in its future. I am running the Stout Mount, Super Mount and Dash on mine as well and I couldn't be happier with that setup in use with the Garmin Zumo XT2. I am running the Gnoblin as well, I had to wait 4-5 months for them to come back in stock but it was worth it. I mounted it to the True North Moto XABR rack which is ideal for my setup since this is my dedicated dual sport and BDR bike. It's fantastic to be able to eliminate the rear straps for the MM40 system which IMHO are failure points. If only they made a similar option for the sides of the bag system as well I could ditch those straps too.

I believe relatively recently. I really like the low profile design for a primarily off-road vehicle. The less likely to get damaged, the better. I actually had zero complaints about the fueling and timing with the stock ECU and the 12t cs. I was questioning why everyone said it was necessary - until I got one. It greatly improves every facet of the bikes performance. Highly suggest the traction control knob as well. I’ve really been eyeballing the Garmin XT for the 501. I love using OnX, but having a dedicated GPS Unit would be sweet. I am leaning towards their Tread edition, since it caters more towards off-road trails. It sounds like we have very similar setups 👍🏻 I am absolutely loving this bike and the way it’s coming together. It’s everything I’ve wanted in a do-it-all platform. Such a joy to ride.

No doubt a 501 has a wider range of use in concept, but obv can’t match single track ability of a stroke or 250/350 4stroke. Been riding for 40+ years and what I’ve learned is, you need at least 3 bikes. Small enduro for real off-road, 650 thumper for dual sport, large bike for pavement routes. You’re better off buying multiple bikes than spending money accessorizing to shoehorn a bike into something it’s not meant for. I’ve landed on KTM 350 for single track days, ktm 690 (with rally fairing) for BDR type trips, 1200 GSA for road focuses trips,

This is all definitely true. There is no one bike to do it all, but the 500/501 is dang close. I am going to push the limits of this 500 in the enduro aspect to really see what it can do. Yesterday was promising. 4 strokes in general are a hassle in the technical and steep terrain - but if you’ve spent a decent amount of time on a 2 stroke and have built good disciplines, you can do a lot. It definitely comes down to the rider. My goal is to have a 300 2t, the 501 and a 901 expedition. As you said, three bikes covers the entire spectrum well. You have a good spread that serves all intended purposes 👍🏻

They lack quite a bit in comparison in the aftermarket, but not enough that it would hinder my decision to get one. I’d say it’s important to have dealer support close by with Beta, only because they are finicky and have quirks that sometimes require Beta to step in and help resolve them. 500’s are great machines and while they wont be as good on pavement, they are night and day better off-road. That’s a tough call. They’re very similar in a lot of ways, but they are also notably different in a few key areas, especially suspension wise. With either of the 500’s you’re definitely going to gain back that bottom end and bottomless torque, I find them easier to ride than the 350’s most of the time for that reason. The slower revving and linear power of the 500’s is very versatile and a blast to ride. I know Husqy did a major overhaul on their bikes for 2024, ditching the composite subframe and reengineering some smaller designs that were addressed by consumers the last few years. I personally prefer the linkage suspension of the Husqy vs the PDS on the KTM. I’d say pick one that you can get the better deal on, and the one that you think looks best! They’re great bikes. It’s now my only bike in the garage, and I couldn’t be more content.

@@IdahoDualSport208 Well thank you so very much ! From the one I looked at, it appeared that the Husky was a tad lower in stock form as compared to the 500EXC I looked at. I was told a little cheaper to lower via changing link, and as you stated both have the same subframe now for 2024. I sort of like the Husky colors and so long as they don't end up discontinued like the Husabergs, I may go for the FE501s. And get rid of that 2x4 of a seat with a low Seat Concepts. I like your mods and would like to do most of those once I get the bike. I just need to study up on those ECU changes to see how much of that I feel comfortable doing myself. Does yours have an O2 sensor or is that only for the factory street legal bikes? If so, is there a workaround for that or should that just be left in place?

@@Monacheman-4x4the Husqy is a great machine. The seat heat I believe is slightly lower, and at 5’10 it’s perfect for me. The seat concepts upgrade is definitely worth it as well. Yes there is an O2 sensor delete kit from Taco Moto, which I have installed along side the GET ECU.

Currently in a (kind of) similar situation. I have a husky te250i 2-stroke, which is absolutely fantastic for single track and just trail riding in general. I also have a CRF 450L set up more for light adventure riding, but I still rip trails and even single track on it sometimes Love them both, will likely keep both...but I keep going over whether I should sell them both to get a ktm/husky 500/501. Less expensive, just simpler to maintain one bike...but I really love single track riding, and I just can't see the 501 being close enough to the 2-stroke in terms of overall capability. I also wonder how far off the 450L is from the husky 501 for technical woods riding? I have the ECU and pipe upgrades for it. Yes, it's quite a bit heavier...but I still feel like it might be close to the 501? Is the 501 REALLY close enough to the te250i 2-stroke woods capabilities...orbis it just moderately better than the 450L? Curious to hear your thoughts. Thank you.

That’s a very tough predicament to be in. Mainly because, although there is a lot of overlap from those two bikes, they are still far apart on each end of the spectrum. I will say this though, the 501 with the right gearing is the closest thumper I’ve ever had to a 2 stroke 300. It has bottomless linear torque, and only comes shy in the super gnarly stuff where stalling becomes an issue. The 450L is a great bike, but no matter what you do it’s a race motor and it is nowhere near as smooth or tractable as the 500/501 is. The 2 stroke will always feel more playful on the trails, and carry its idle easier in steep tight switchbacks. The 501 hangs in there closer than most people would think, though. I ride with 12/50 gearing a lot of the time and have made it up hills and sections that some 2 strokes struggled in. It weighs almost the same as most modern 2 strokes but can still dual sport without hesitation. It is by far my favorite bike I’ve ever ridden and will likely always have one in the garage after owning this one. However, I would be lying if the temptation to get another 2 stroke hadn’t crossed my mind. I don’t solely seek out tight mountain single track very often, but when you come across it, there’s no denying that a 2 stroke is better in those conditions. Overall the 501 does everything off-road amazingly well, and maybe better than any other bike. It can still hit pavement sections if needed, but I really don’t have it set up for that minus the street legal kit for when necessary. My gearing, tires, and suspension are all setup to get me through typical Idaho terrain which can get technical quick. It’s an amazing bike and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend one over the 450L, but I’m not 100% sure I can say that it would fully replace you’re 250 in a way you’d be satisfied with. Hope that helps a bit. Good luck with the decision!

Thanks for the reply man. I appreciate your input. It's just one of those scenarios where you have one bike (501) that isn't really quite as good as either of the other two at their respective categories...450L is, in my opinion, a better all around dual sport (mostly due to better road manners) and te250i is a better woods/enduro bike - compared to the 501. BUT - 501 is still a decent dual sport, still pretty damn close to the 2-stroke on trails (with proper set up), and it's only one bike to maintain. The other side of that though is that if you try to use just one bike for all of your riding styles - perhaps I'm wrong, but I feel it will 'wear out' faster, lol. I'm from eastern Canada (Prince Edward Island) and our typical dual sporting routes with a combination of pavement, fire roads, and ATV double track don't typically overlap with the tighter single track riding (because most of that is on private land)...so probably makes sense to keep both. The 450L can handle the dual sport routes around here just fine. If they overlapped more, and technical terrain was more integrated into the dual sporting...I'd definitely have a 501, KTM 500, or even a beta dual sport. Maybe you should do the same if your mountain single track is a totally separate scenario that you would do frequently enough? Cheers

@@andrewhume7410you’re pretty much right on the money, and nailed down why I scaled down to just the 501. It can handle the tighter mountain riding I generally do because it’s so integrated into Idaho’s riding. There’s potential to maybe add another 2 stroke in the future, but the 501 has just been so good the desire just hasn’t been there, yet. However, I am definitely planning on adding an ADV bike like the 890r or 901 expedition to accompany the 501 in the next year or so 😎 thanks for watching and giving feedback. They surely need ECU refinement from the factory. Taco Moto offers a great ECU which I opted in for, that completely changed the power delivery and fueling of the bike. @@johnharris7756oddly, that seems to be true. I have many friends with both, and the orange bikes are the only ones that seem to be problematic. Not sure why that is, but I believe Husqy QC is just that much better, or they do a better job engineering with the same components as KTM. Maintenance intervals are what you’d expect for a performance enduro machine. Race intervals are like Yamaha and Honda’s race intervals - 5-10 hours on most maintenance. However, it’s commonly agreed upon that 20-25 hours for oil changes and air filters as needed is plenty sufficient. That puts me roughly anywhere from 1-1.5k miles between oil changes. It’s enough to allow me to do full length BDR’s, and rides that would stretch my physical ability well before the bikes. I have spoken with quite a few guys who have 32k+ miles on their older 501’s without a hiccup, in accord with those maintenance intervals. I’d consider that bulletproof!
