FDNY & Nassau County MUTUAL AID for Explosion and FIRE in Meadowmere Park.

~Mutual Aid (All Hands for FDNY)~
Date: 11/1/2020
Location: Meadowmere Park, Long Island.
Around 5:30 AM Sunday morning a 911 call was received by FDNY dispatch from a person in Rosedale Queens who reported seeing a house on fire. 3 Engines and 2 Ladders along with the 54th Battalion were assigned to the box. Ladder 158 saw a a heavy column of smoke in the distance and transmitted a 10-75 (code for a 1st alarm assignment). The 10-75 was initially called off when Ladder 158 realized the fire was across the border in Nassau County. As Engine 314 got closer he reported to Queens that there were two private dwellings fully involved with fire extending to a third. Engine 314 requested that Battalion 54 grant them permission to begin a mutual aid operation to help the Volunteer fire companies due to the severity of the situation. Battalion 54 agreed this was necessary and transmitted the 10-75 for a fire in Meadowmere Park. The fire, it turns out, was the result of a gas explosion. Volunteer firefighters made the push in extreme heat conditions and got the job done even when they experienced initial hydrant issues. At one point a chimney collapsed sending bricks down onto members of a Vollie company. Division 13 of the FDNY put the FAST truck to work to assist Vollies and EMS in packaging and transporting the injured members to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries. Nassau PD requested a medevac helicopter to take a civilian who suffered burns to the hospital. [CORRECTION: Firefighters were transported to the hospital via ambulance, the severely burned civilian was the one airlifted.]

Video shows there are the following Fire Departments (FD): - New York City Fire Department (FDNY) - Lawrence-Cedarhurst Fire Department (LCFD) - Inwood Fire Department (IFD) - Meadowmere Park Fire Department (MPFD) - Woodmere Fire Department (WFD). I don't know which others ones there are (based on the video), but something tells me there might have been more Fire Departments down there.

Meadowmere Park is kind of an island in Jamaica bay just south of JFK airport. It is somewhat isolated , there is only one road that accesses it which is off of Rockaway Blvd. Although it is in Nassau County it sits more in Queens. The road in is in Nassau but the island has a footbridge that connects with Queens.

We also work close with our neighbors to the east and west. When the bar I worked and lived at went up it involved our complete fire hall and our neighbors in Kingsville. If you want to see it search V.I. fire Leamington. I am the big bald guy. It amazes me how volunteers work together with other companies to save property. I may not be a firefighter but I do support all they do. If I ask a question please remember that while my ass is in a chair I cannot do what you guys do. @@rj4590 Oh please. Read the story of the three pigs, there's a message in it. You talk about a brick built house with wood and plastic inside would burn, as opposed to what? a wooden tinderbox where all your wood and plastic burns, meaning everything, house and contents. And gas explosions are rare, anyway gas explosions do happen in properties erected from wood as they would in homes erected from bricks and mortar, so that rules out that theory you made. And the speed of the fire spreading from wooden structures is ten times faster than brick homes. Look at any video of firefighters fighting fires in America when called out to properties on fire that are made from wood, there's practically nothing left to save by the time they arrive on the scene. And you are far more likely to die in a house fire in a wooden structure than a brick structure for obvious reasons. All homes in my country have to by law have fire resistant materials embedded into the walls and roof of the property. Clearly this is not the case in America.

It is all about costs. Concrete and masonry is very expensive in terms of materials and labor compared to wood frame. Bricklaying is expensive. A couple of framers can have a house frame up in 2 or 3 days, depending in size. That is what is driving it. In Europe and Asia all the trees have been cut down and wood is extremely expensive and in most of Asia labor is extremely cheap, so it is better in terms of costs to build in concrete and masonry. Timber construction in, say, SE Asia, is approximately 54 times (more or less depending on country) more expensive than concrete post-and-beam with brick infill, so they don't build in wood, except the very rich because timber construction is a show-off thing.
