The crave is one of my favorite discs, but I do think that the stability of MVP plastic is a little more unpredictable. Disc Golf Down Under made a great video comparing all the different MVP plastics and found very little conclusive evidence to say that one was more overstable than the other, especially when it comes to Proton/Neutron/Prism/Plasma. The only real way of knowing is to get a bunch of craves in different plastics and try them out, which is great but not necessarily something everyone can do. I think C-Line and S-Line plastic is a little more reliable in terms of stability, you know you're getting a more overstable/understable disc depending on the line that you choose.

I think MVP varies more person to person. I think the rotation that someone puts on a disc is more important when it comes to MVP because of the overmold. Just my $.02

  • @andreasericsson6989

    @andreasericsson6989

    8 ай бұрын

That's because MVP discs are smaller. Smaller diameter and lower profile. Micro-errors in the molding process have a greater impact on smaller diameter discs. Latitude64 made a video of why disc molding is *never* perfect. One reason is that to get it perfect, the type of plastic one would have to use would be medical grade (basically used for bypass surgeries, to be inserted into blood vessels), and discs would cost a solid $1000 a piece. Oh, you also can't add colors, because colors mess up the plastic to some extent too. MVP also complicates the molding process somewhat by having their overmold. The overmold process causes a stressline on the disc, because plastic polymers end up shortened when they get heated beyond a certain point (and they do get heated when the overmold is added, or there would be two distinct layers of plastic and you'd be able to rotate the overmold around the... errr... undermold?). That stressline also means MVP discs, or rather, overmold discs in general, break in *much* faster. That stressline will be like a 1000-ish molecules wide layer of significantly harder plastic, which will cause treehits, rockhits, baskethits etc to simply do more damage to the edge of the bevel. The bevel's edge ends up between a rock and a hard place, quite literally, whereas non-overmold discs will eat up some of the impact by flexing throughout the entire disc, like an impact zone in a car. Not necessarily a bad business strategy, since discgolfers tend to love their beaten in old discs but also get spares for them in case they get *too* beat in, but it does make it tricky to consistently trust them when they're just one hit away from flying almost like a totally different disc.

  • @ApolloDiscGolf

I think any disc can vary even within plastics, but some plastics are generally more overstable or understable. But the best way to tell within the same plastic is the wing height which I explain in a couple videos!

I bag a C-line FD and a Proton Crave. I find the crave is easier for me to forehand accurately down tight tree corridors whereas the FD is better for reliable 300’ - 350’ straight backhands in the open. FD fights wind a bit better. I have 2 Craves and both are a little flippy backhand compared to my FDs. Regarding FD plastic- it’s available in Color Glow C-line (more stable), Metal flake, stock C-line, Chroma, S-line, and Swirly S-line. I’m sure the Horizon version is coming too but FD already comes in a bunch of plastic. I’d imagine the Color glow C-line FDs stability gives the FD the edge in filling the most slots with one mold. On the other end the lighter weight S-line Ella Hansen FDs are flippy out of the box.

I bag FDs for this slot. One S line that I'm beating in and one chroma as the overstable FD. I throw more fairways than anything else, and I think my most thrown disc is probably my S line FD. I also like that the FD1 is there to give you an overstable complement with pretty similar feel and the same plastic options. Looking forward to seeing the other plastic options that come over time.

I'm glad you compared these two. Both great discs. I prefer the feel of the FD and the c-line can also be used to throw a bomb forehand turnover (hyzer to flat to drift) which is a hard attribute to find. I never had much luck trying to flick a crave but most people probably don't care about that.

I’ve been team crave for a year now. This disc is just too good in the woods to pass up. The new protons and cosmic neutrons can handle some snap while the other plastics can go laser straight or be a crazy good flippy fairway. My favorite part about the crave is the fact that they are so controllable with near distance driver distance. This unique attribute (which is also in the FD) makes them absolute weapons for those wooded par 4’s that demand both distance and accuracy off the tee.

I was testing this after this video, I have a couple FDs and picked up an R2 crave. The flights are a little different for me. The s-line FD is a flippy long turn over disc, the c-line just flies strait as an arrow, it might drift a little if you really spin it, but mostly it's just strait. I recently tried out the Cicada and found it flippier than both FDs. But I fount the R2 crave to be kinda a goldie locks right between the FDs, it was pretty easy to flip up and would do the late flight drift if you hit it a little harder. Realistically this R2 crave could replace both the FDs.

Larger diameter disc means: more torque/power as the moment of inertia is a bit more; this also means a larger drag/lift; this also means the disc will be slower; and it could also make the disc more difficult to turn-over. S line FD and Cosmic Neutron Crave are so similar to me forehand. The S Line sticks to your hand, whereas the Cosmic Neutron seems to flow out nice. The Crave is a little more shallow. Both of them are very workable and bomb. Both have a little turn, fly straight, and have a slight fade. Now backhand, they fly a little different. The S line FD turns a lot more than the Crave and stays straighter a little longer. Distance wise, I have not seen any advantage other than the FD seems to take less effort. Overall, I prefer the Crave and my son prefers the FD. though he uses his Passion more than the FD now. I still think the Crave is the best overall disc due to the ease of throwing and all the weights and plastics available.

Larger diameter discs have more natural glide compared to a smaller diameter discs shaped the same. Smaller diameter discs tend to feel faster and easier to get up to speed. Westside takes advantage of this by making larger diameter discs combined with a narrower rim to achieve the same speed as other brands. Compare a Westside 12 speed to a Destroyer and you should notice the difference.

I haven't thrown a stag in a long time! So I can't say for sure. but I would think they are pretty similar!

I dont think that the versitility for the FD was fair rated. You tried more Craves! My S-Line FD was really flippy out of the box. Still a awesome video, keep up the great work

I'm not a fan of Fission plastic, I've found it beats in really fast, and isn't as good for long-usage cycling like Neutron and Cosmic Neutron. My fission reactor went from a 0/1 to a -2/1 within 4 months or so.

That's why I love the Fission ones, because they can get really flippy to be the easy turnover fairways pretty quick!

Nothing against Discmania but there is no way that they have or will have more versatility with the FD. MVP produces their popular discs in all of their available plastics, with a very consistent options of lighter weights. You can get a Crave in Neutron, Cosmic Neutron, R2 Neutron, Proton, Fission, Plasma and Eclipse. These are readily available and they run multiple plastics all of the time. Discmania's new discs are often near max weight, they come in 2 stock run plastics, C-line and S-line, with much more limited runs of alternative plastics like Metal Flake C line, and Swirly S line.

But that's because they just took manufacturing in house so they are still building everything back up and getting all their previous molds in the new process. Give them a few years and I bet they will have their staples pretty readily available in all their different plastics!

I will never understand how people get consistent releases with rims as shallow as mvp/axiom’s. Can’t bag any of their discs cause I just can’t grip onto them.

really surprised at how popular the crave is... maybe i got a broken one but it's the worst disc i've ever owned haha. (the black one that came with PDGA membership). Chunky, slow, short, beefy, no glide, awful feeling in hand ....

Seems like the Cicada fits into this conversation as well. Just a note for others here, the Sara Hokom craves are quite overstable, and you can tell just by holding them, the parting line is very high and they fly accordingly. That said, it's a forehand friendly variant on the mold
