I've been throwing some MVP since their first disc, the Ion came out. Loved it and have been putting with it since, but it was the only MVP in my bag. The Wave changed that. Guaranteed to add distance for noodle armed throwers like me. I was throwing a Surge SS as my main driver before I picked up a few Waves to try out. Instant noticeable added distance. My bag slowly changed to all MVP as I tried different molds. The Volt is another VERY good disc, that replaced my Stalkers. The Theory is a super straight flying mid, although it's unfortunately OOP.

I’ve always heard that your max distance divided by 30 is a rough ballpark for the highest speed disc you can throw, and throwing faster discs won’t increase your distance. For example, someone throwing 300’ should cap their speed at 10. Definitely relates to what you were saying about faster discs going further as long as you have the arm speed to throw them, I’m just wondering how accurate the max/30 rule of thumb is

  • @springysloth1186

    @springysloth1186

I’ve never heard this before, but it applies to my game very well. I think it is a good rule for mediocre to advanced players, but with pros throwing 600+ feet it doesn’t apply as much. That would call for a 20+ speed disc. Thanks for the information though, I’ll definitely use this rule!

I’ve tried similar discs across many brands and I personally like the MVP gyro bc it seems to feel like you don’t need to put as much into the disc to get a similar flight to other brands. They also seem to want to glide further or stay in the air longer. Maybe the gyro puts more weight at the rim for the balance of the disc therefore making it naturally have more rotations making it stay up in the air longer.

In order for there to be any momentum transferred to the disc you have to still be moving at your run speed as you release the disc. Since you plant your lead foot this becomes you overbalancing. The only pro who really does this is James Conran, maybe Kevin Jones.

  • @owenb.3831

I’m a college baseball player and the mechanics of throwing a disc and ball are somewhat similar. When you have a fast run up, you typically rush and don’t create much separation between your hips and shoulders. Which a slower run up, you will usually be more controlled and be able to create more separation. When you go fast you end up throwing your timing off but if you ever figure out how to time your movements better the fast run up will go faster but it will take time to learn.

  • @owenb.3831

An example could be Simon lizottes 360 spin throw. If I went and did that it would go 200 feet but he has learned how he needs to time it and it allows him to create a ridiculous amount of stretch and separation and generate greater speed than a normal throw.

For scientific purposes (if you want to be more/actually scientific about it), the best way to account for variances from throw to throw or thrower to thrower is to simply increase the number of throws. Throw and measure 10, 20, or 50 throws with each disc and average them. The bigger the sample size the more options you have for working with the numbers too. For example you can choose to eliminate a certain number of the farthest and shortest throws for each disc to account for anomalies and get a more representative average.

Here is one of the problems with the fast run up - it becomes increasingly difficult the faster you go to get your feet, arms, hips, and elbows to rotate effectively around your center of gravity. Imagine trying to throw hard or hit someone hard at a full sprint. Basically your footwork just exists to give you the opportunity to establish direction and allow your body to get 'set' for release. Loved the last segment. My dog just sighed while I laughed for nearly a minute...

Maybe the slower run up gives you more time to focus on what actually matters in generating power, which is when the plant foot goes down up until you release the disc. This abt 0.2 seconds long period is the most important in the whole throw for generating power.

As an MA40 player that doesn't have a monster arm, I have yet to find a disc I can consistently throw farther than a Wave. I highly recommend the disc.

i would say if you can keep technique and run up faster than yes you can throw farther. You need to add plausible into the list like myth busters

I really want to know if this is true or not. Myth: Heavier discs go further

heavier discs are more predictable in the wind, therefore they are better controlled. If you can get 100% same throw with a disc that is lighter, the light one will go further, because it can float longer in air due to its reduced bodyweight.

@@ironsebbs9848 he didn't measure distance though. He measured arm speed. I guess you could say faster arm speed would mean a further throw, only if there is no wind, though.

It is already known that lighter discs go further but heavy discs are more reliable

Dynamic Disc guys tested this maybe 2 years ago. Light disc flies farther with low arm speed and max weight flies farther with fast arm speed. Makes sense as well.

In future range comparisons... throwing 5-10 shots with each disc and taking the average would potentially be better science. Adds to production time but... just an idea without trying to get into mechanical solutions that could standardize the throw.

I play with mostly discraft, throw a buzzz regularly. First throw with a Hex it held the straightest line I'd ever seen, also went about 20ft further than my buzzz. Still prefer to throw my discraft discs though.
