Something I’ve always wondered about. George Higgins was an Assistant US Attorney when he wrote The Friends of Eddie Coyle. He had a character who seemed to have been based on a few different Boston gangsters. He implies that pretty much everyone in the Boston underworld was talking to the authorities. That was in 1970 and years later people were shocked when they found out that everyone was talking to the authorities.

FBI might have looked the other way because of little Billy Bulger’s friendship with speaker McCormack.
