Hahaha that sigh and ‘am I boring you?’ made me giggle. As did ‘bless you baby’. I bought a fantasy short story collection the other day thanks to your Instagram stories. I may have to get Akatawitch now too. And Forest of a Thousand Lanterns. They both sound goooooooood. My top three. Flames by Robbie Arnott, From The Wreck by Jane Rawson and When I Hit You by Meena Kandasamy.

Love your reflections on the difference of how we consume movies vs books. I also feel novels need to do interesting things with structure to take advantage of how innovative the form can be (as well as telling a great story - obviously). I love origin stories for "villans" so I'd be really interested in reading Forest of a Thousand Lanterns. If I had to pick my top 3 books of last year they'd be Women Talking by Miriam Toews, Washington Black by Esi Edugyan & Sight by Jessie Greengrass. I'd love in particular to know your reaction to Sight because it focuses on motherhood - but even though I'm a man and don't have children I could still really relate and connect to it. :)

It’s so adorable to hear the little one in the background helping you talk about your faves of the year❤️!!!!! I have Akata Witch and Akata Warrior to read this year and I’m reading Binti this weekend. My top 3 (I will cheat liberally here...): 1. Circe / The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle. 2. Nevermoor 3. Reservoir 13/Picnic at Hanging Rock. I had some ties...😂😂

Your top 3 books sound great. I’ll be adding them to the list, especially looking forward to Akata Witch. My top 3 reads this year were Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng, The Hating Game by Sally Thorne and The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid.

Enjoy your commentaries, especially the manner in which you describe the genres, text features, craft & structure, and levels of enjoyment of each text. During 2018 I read and thoroughly enjoyed Yann Martel's (1993) The Facts Behind the Helsinki Roccamatios and some short stories in Ursula K. LeGuin's (1975) The Wind's Twelve Quarters aside from reading about 25-30 books, 100 articles, and lots of dissertations (boring stuff). Thank you for promoting reading. I agree with Dulce Candy. Reading does make you an independent thinker.

I need to add Dark Eden to my reading list. My top 3 reads of 2018 include Dracula, Sleeping Beauties by Stephen King and Mistborn the Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson. I love vampires so I needed to try one of the original vampire lore and I was not disappointed. I loved the mystery and detective like flow of Dracula. Also learned a few things about Vampires. Sleeping Beauties was a story I could not put down. It was a beautiful feminist nightmare. Mistborn was a fun, fast past heist /rebellion story with an interesting magic system.
