Father-Son Backcountry Bowhunting Adventure (FIRST ELK EVER!!)

Wyoming Public Land Archery Elk Hunting - A true dream bull in the rugged Rocky Mountains of Wyoming. This hunt has been a work in progress for years, building preference points, scouting in-person and online through e-scouting for elk, this hunt was one I’d been working toward for years. My dad and I have been hunting together for many years, and this trip is by far the most exciting and extreme mountain adventure we’ve ever witnessed. Bugling bull elk, a grizzly bear, black bear, and incredible mountain views, this archery elk hunt will be one remembered for ages. My first elk ever, a giant 6x7 in the Wyoming backcountry a truly spectacular animal that I’ll forever be grateful for.
The most memorable hunt of my life. A true backcountry wilderness dream come true. Living in the wilderness for a week with my dad, the one who taught me to hunt and has been taking me in the outdoors before I could even walk, made this hunt more special than any I’ve experienced in the past.
“Now to him who is able to do IMMEASURABLY more than we ask, think, or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us.” Ephesians 3:20
Going into this hunt having experienced multiple backcountry elk hunts over the years, and never notching my tag, I was hoping to harvest any decent sized bull, even a young raghorn would more than complete the experience for me. I even told myself if I hadn’t shot an elk by day 6 I would take any opportunity that would present itself, cow, younger bull, or otherwise. Of course we all dream of that big 6x6 bull in the back of our truck at the end of the hunt, and that’s what I’ve been working toward and dreaming of for years, but for me, my main goal was to have the best backcountry wilderness experience with my dad and enjoy every moment, and if a shot did present itself, that would just be icing on the cake.
Never would I ever have imagined what would step out into the open meadow the evening of day 6, the most majestic sight I’ve ever witnessed while hunting, just seeing such a spectacular animal made the trip complete, but to lay my hands on him and bring home his meat for the table… simply incredible. I don’t feel like I’m worthy of an animal of this age and size, but yet I’m extremely grateful and thankful God led us right to him.
Bowhunting has a way of teaching life lessons, that’s why I love it so much, and one of the many lessons this hunt taught me is that anything can happen at any time, I mean anything. Even when there’s no sign, even when you haven't seen an elk in days, even when the clock is ticking and time is running out, you never know what’s just around the corner. Only in my wildest imagination did I ever think it was possible to have such an incredible 8 day elk hunting experience, and that’s the cool thing about God. Even when our limited perspective may see negatives and obstacles, those “roadblocks” are actually directing us into the exact path He has made for us, a path that’s immeasurably more than we could ever imagine.

Well done, to share with your dad. Love how you expressed how fullfilling it was to just see that bull the first time even though you didnt shoot, that to me shows the respect and love of hunting you have. Then be able to call him back and get a shot, well deserved. I hope some day to share similar experiences with my son and grandsons.

Great hunt with your Dad! I've been on quite a few archery elk hunts in CO and ID. A few yrs ago when I was 65i took my oldest son to ID for an archery elk hunt. We weren't successful, but I know how hard it is. Hunting with my son was a spiritual experience! Congratulations!

What an amazing experience, you got to share, with your dad. With age, comes perspective, and it’s clear, you’ve got it. When I was a kid, it would’ve been all about that beautiful beast of an animal. As I got older though, I realized that’s just a bonus, and the real prize, is the time logged, and memories made, with your old man. I can’t remember if you mentioned your age, but I’ll be 42 this year, and my pops will be 73. We’re a few hours away from each other, and sadly, don’t get to spend enough time together. Every year, seems to go by quicker and quicker, and sadly, the day will come, when those opportunities, are no longer there. What a true blessing, that you and your dad, shared the trip of a lifetime. It’s quite obvious, how appreciative you are, for your dad, and that time spent together, which is awesome to see. I’m sure he was so happy for you, and so proud. 🙏

July 16, 23....My pops was the best earthly hunting partner I ever had! So many cherished memories of the highs & lows of days spent afield. I'm 54 now & he passed away 11 years ago this month @ 81 years old of natural causes. Your hunt & relationship with your dad, is a mirror image of me & my dad. What a beautiful bond. Loved seeing & hearing your adventure & the goodness of Jesus blessing you both & gifting you both with a memory like this. You are both so fortunate to be father & son. Give each other a giant hug, from a fellow outdoorsman & believer; from Idaho. Thank you for sharing this amazing journey with us. Cherish it & each other, as you prepare for a new hunting season this Fall. Sincerely, Dave. Take a look at my comment I left on the video of your friends elk hunt in Idaho a couple years ago.

I am truly blessed to have the father that I do, in the past few years I’ve come to realize how short our time together really could be, so I’m doing my best to make memories with him out in creation while we are both still healthy and fit for it. I hope to drive back down to Arizona with him this December for another coues deer hunt down there! Thank you for the support and kind words, they really mean a lot to me. God Bless, Micah

There will be more stories of hunts to come , share with your Dad as long as possible. Love the respect for the animal also , the fist bumping of other channels gets old. Your coues video I see your Dad shoots a Bob Lee bow, My first bow was a Red Wing Hunter by Wing Archery in Texas, arrowed a few whitetais with it in the 70s . Bob was their bowyer for many years . I hope fate will let you two have more and more hunts together WITHOUT THE BEAR! Cool video. I’m sure the bear had something to do with low elk numbers. Hunting with a resistance has become my favorite! Although I was shaking like crazy, the shot on this bull was by far the best feeling and most confident shot I’ve ever taken on an animal. That’s the main benefit to shoot a resistance under pressure for me, no way to punch it in my head, so every shot with it is executed cleanly even when shaking. Yes he did!

As a farmer, he typically walks 3-5 miles a day irrigating and doing other odd jobs, and also hikes with 45lbs in the backpack prior to season. Along with that he will occasionally run and do other exercises as well, mostly just being active on a daily basis on the farm keeps him in shape. Hiking through soybean fields cutting weeds in mid summer is just as strenuous as hiking steep terrain!

Congratulations on a great hunt. I am a native Colorado hunter blessed to grow up here. You are a fine young man with a wonderful father to guide you and hunt with you. I also was fortunate to be raised by a dad like yours, that enjoyed taking me and my brothers elk hunting every year he has passed now but I will always have the memories. I think and noticed one thing that helped you harvest this elk was the sun was directly in his eyes and he could not make you and your dad out. Think that is why he came back not knowing what you were. Just curious if you happened to score him, I was guessing 340" to 350". Thank you for sharing this really enjoyed.

What an awesome bull and hunt. I hunt a lot in grizzly country and some thoughts about what we do. We always plan to hang quarters as high up as possible on a cross log between two trees. In the rib cage we stick a 6" stick with a ribbon tied to it so when approaching if the stick is knocked down we know something got to it. Usually the bears will hit the carcass first so if the quarters are a couple hundred yards away in a tree they usually are still good to go. Game bags help keep things clean from blow flies. No guarantees though in bear country. Moth balls are good for scent deterrent.

@@BowOnlyOutdoors We build the cross log on a tree frame and stand it up, no ladder needed. Tie off the ropes first to pull the quarters up. Get it up about 15'. Always carry a sven saw and mule tape.

@@BowOnlyOutdoors Usually there are some small 6" dead trees around to make the goal post. When we stand it up we lash it to the two trees with mule tape about chest high. Then pull the quarters up with the rope you put on, Good paracord will due. It is kind of self explanatory once you think it through. Grizzlies don't climb but black bears do. Usually they won't go out on the cross log but will try to reach the meat from the tree.

You guys are good hunters no question about it but toss the resistance and work on shot control with an index. You can work through it, it’s just target panic.

You can find a grizzly distribution map on the Wyoming Game and Fish website. Once you figure out the units where grizz reside, you can plan your hunt by applying for units outside of this area! Grizzlies definitely add danger to the hunt, but can also add some excitement too haha

You need to realize that the most important 6 inches in archery hunting is between your ears. I realize how exciting it is, trust me! I shot my first bull, a big 7x7 with my recurve at six yards 25 years ago. I was able to see the bull coming from over 200 yards away. When I first saw him and how big he was I started shaking. He went out of sight at about 100 yards away. I closed my eyes, said a quick prayer and said to myself “XXXXXXX” (my last name) you’re going to remember this the rest of your life, good or bad, so get it together and make it a good memory “ I opened my eyes and I was DEAD CALM… The bull came in to 10 yards and stopped and was staring right through me. There was nothing between us. He stood there for over 5 minutes! I kept my eyes glued to his hind quarter cuz at that distance (or any distance in my opinion) if you make eye contact it’s over … anyway my buddy behind me and off to my left started raking a tree (he could see me and the elk the whole time) and the bull turned and walked by me at 6 yards and I drew back and released in one motion with my recurve and blew my arrow right through him and watched him drop 60 yards later. Sorry I rambled on, my my point is to keep your head clear and calm. You have your entire life after the shot to relive it over and over and get excited. Before any archery season starts I play the shot scenario over and over in my head before the hunt starts. Olympic athletes and all kinds of athletes do that now, because once you see it happening in your mind it’s easier to do in real life. Look at the 4 minute mile. It was years and years before it happened because no one thought it was possible. Once it was done many ppl broke the 4 minute mile because they knew it could be done!!! I realize hunting is exciting , but keep calm until after the shot!! Congrats on a nice bull 👍

If the encounter is dangerous/charging bear utilize the bear spray in the way it’s intended. Most folks take either bear spray or a pistol, not both, but we had both just in case. I know of many hunters that are completely comfortable hunting in grizz country with just the mace for protection

It’s not mace, it’s bear pepper spray? Huge difference!! I worked several years in remote Alaska in grizzly country. Some areas so thick I couldn’t see my coworker 10 feet away. I never carried a pistol for bear protection, it’s 90% useless against a charging grizzly. I’ll take pepper spray over a pistol all day long.
