Father shares story after son dies by suicide

Twenty years ago, talking about one's mental health was not as common as it is today, but the taboo has not been completely erased. That's why one set of parents is bringing it to the forefront after losing their son to suicide. Anthony Salas said his son, Ben was happy and cheerful. In a home video of a younger Ben, he can be seen sledding down a winter slope of snow and laughing the whole ride down. That laughter continued in another video of an older Ben, but the smile is just the same.

It's terrible, I suffer from depression, I often think of how to leave without it being painful, I have everything I want in life, but my depression is often unbearable, I decided not to have children in case I go i don't cause more pain. People underrate depression

I hope you are doing ok, depression is a hard and often seemingly lonely experience. I lost my 18yr old son to suicide 28 weeks ago, he was suffering depression and social anxiety post the pandemic, before that he was a happy healthy young boy. What I can tell you is that although he felt no one cared and that he was all alone, his loss has affected a vast number of friends who love him and highly respect him. I believe the same is true for you, reach out to those close to you, talking it out is so important, choose the ones you feel safe with that will listen and be there for you. I am sending you so much love and strength, I myself have experienced depression for long periods of time but I found understanding why I was feeling that way and learning that I am not alone that it is quite common and to self care and love myself as I would care for another helped me overcome it, my meditation and other practices helped me, and now I no longer experience depression just grief and loss, the greatest loss ever. Everyone of us is unique and precious and we all matter, you too do xxx

I hope everyone here is doing okay.. I don't know exactly what you are going through, but know that people care about you, even if it may not feel like it at times. If you are feeling troubled, maybe professional help is the answer, or talking to a trusted friend about what you are going through. People care about you, even if it may not feel like it at times. Wish you the best.

Sorry to hear. My son 16y old hung himself recently. He had problems with his friends and I did not act on the signs that he was becoming depressed over the December holiday. There was a false allegation from a girl in his friend group, and he reacted rashly before the truth came out. I'm not sure I can get over the guilt, but I'm doing my best to keep going.

I’m sorry but as someone who is currently suicidal and lacks patience, this comment is disgusting. Imagine being in so much anguish that you’re considering ending your life and someone calls you dumb for that. As if these people aren’t suffering enough. As if simply reaching out for help is a magical solution that makes suicidality and mental illness go away. As if help is even available for everyone! If anyone here is struggling with suicidal thoughts I do urge you to get help where you can. Friends, family, doctor, therapist, teacher, anyone you think will be supportive. There won’t be instant relief but it’s often possible to work towards feeling better. And to those people who don’t understand mental illness or suicide, please refrain from commenting something judgemental and consider doing some self-education. Again I apologize as I’m usually kinder but I’m very tired right now and not willing to tolerate words that could cause so much harm.
