    No, it’s not unusual to see younger and younger bishops, historically or even present day. It’s really only in recent centuries that we picture a bishop as an old wise man, but historically that wasn’t the case. Secondly, he’s not a cardinal. The Cardinal is pictured center in the panel. He’s most likely an auxiliary bishop and that Cardinals chaplain, which isn’t unusual at all. Bishops are appointed for various different reasons in Rome especially, from all over the world, including the USA.

    When this movie was being marketed, I decided to do some research on Gabriele Amorth and his life. Needless to say, I found the late father to be a fascinating man; Storied in his experiences, unique in his approach to the practice, dedicated in his service and belief. I mean, this is a person who co-authored a book titled "The Devil is Afraid of Me" - that definitely speaks to his personal confidence. Also, I must say...Russell Crowe looks nothing like the real Amorth, which I find a bit humorous.

    Rather than a fake story of a demonic incident this film should’ve been entirely about Father Amorth’s struggle as he maintained both his devout Catholic faith and his scientific reasoning despite any number of forces trying to pull him one way or the other. It should’ve been a serious drama with a scattering of supernatural and mental health focused elements.

  • @boguslav9502

    That would be a wonderful movie, you could pull a ton of other characters inspired from both fields of science, theology, the church, and bring them together into a very very good drama. Evil exists, posession as well, mental health as well, etc. And we have all these people crossing paths with things that completely defy human understanding while looking completely benign. They would have to struggle internally, immensely, trying to discern the supernatural from the natural, which sometimes can have wicked layers. Patients who are already mentally ill coming under posession, schizophrenics commiting horrible crimes pushed on by evil beings sitting right next to those who did the exact same thing but with no sign of evil beings other than their own insanity. I cant imagine how intense a movie like that would be. A crime thriller with a ton of drama.

    I have come very late to the films of Russell Crowe and there are some that achieved great critical and public support that I don`t appreciate, for different reasons. But I totally admire the way he has always taken on very different acting roles ,extending both his own range and that of the people he works with. I have watched many of his interviews, some of which are stupidly sycophantic and superficial . But where he is asked intelligent questions and is allowed to expand his ideas on film acting and production ,he comes across to me as an incredible asset to the cinema world.

    It's an artistic choice to give the impression that Father Amorth is out of touch with the modern church. The youngest bishop on a Vatican council was 32 years old, Luigi Bettazzi. He was part of the Vatican 2 council. So it's not completely out of bounds.

    One thing I will point out is that the youngest among the "firing squad" as Father Gabriele accurately pointed out seems to be dismissive of the existance of evil. He turns very condescending and critical soon after that. Problem of the current generation imo. And properly shut down by the father in entertaining fashion thanks to Russel Crowe's performance.

  • @shadow9478
    @shadow94789 ай бұрын

    The thing that kills me about this scene is the young cardinal sitting at the table. This scene is set in 1987. That character is probably no older than 35. The youngest cardinal chosen in the last 100 years was 49 when chosen in 2020. And there are two Cardinals at the table, with 3 archbishops. Why is one cardinal wearing the traditional red vestments, while the other is wear the red and black vestments of a bishop? Granted, cardinals are still bishops, so i can accept that. Secondly, cardinal Sullivan is speaking to amorth like he's looking for a reason to send him to some far off place out of the public eye. And then he gets more mad when amorth says if you have a problem, you can talk to my boss, who just happens to be the bishop of rome, the Pope. Probably the nicest and simplest "go fuck yourself" statement I've ever heard from a Catholic church based film, and ive been a Catholic for almost 30 years.

    The only true thing about this movie was that there was indeed an exorcist named Gabriel Amorth, but that's it. If you understand even a little bit about Catholicism or how exorcists operate, the movie is like a pantomime.
