i know you want a viewing area in the area where the bale is, but i cant help thinking that space may be better used as a new bigger calf unit/ area, few fences to separate them from the main unit and new pens installed ,

If you do go making a new calf barn, might want to look for hinged stall walls and vertical members that can be sun up out of the way or removed to make mucking out the barn easier.

Great video as always Tom. God the need for a modern purpose built calf shed is huge. Your old one served it's time but is so labour intensive and with the volume you put through it ; it's amazing you manage to keep viruses and diseases at bay. It's an eye opener for some people the amount of work that is involved.

You could use a sheep gate(or two) to guide the calves into the pens when swapping them around, they're light and easy shift... they would stop them running past the pen.. and save Tom the laps up and down the shed 😅 super video as always!

Well if you are going to look at maize you might as well look at other crops for comparison, for example rye or triticale as both can be planted in the fall and over winter providing fodder in the spring or if you don't need the fodder (depending on the year) can be used as a straw/grain crop. I know 10th Generation Dairyman uses triticale as a fodder crop and he has some videos on it.

I worked in auto repair and have had used motor oil dumped on me from my chest down, and in restaurants and had used cooking oil splashed on me. Never hot oil. I don't think would ever feel clean again, after a day cleaning animal stalls like that even one day, not even getting it dumped on me. You who do that are a special kind of breed, and I love you for it, because I love what comes from what you do.

Tom, I know you don’t want to take on another project. I know the next one likely to be the calf shed. Have you considered shipping containers as a stopgap till you get round to doing it and having more time with Jo and the bambino. I’m sure wearing could help cutting or bending the fronts up and welding gate brackets inside to make bigger or smaller pens. You could open the two doors reverse the tractor in and clean it all out in one go.

QUESTIONS: 1. Where do you get your mud? 2. How often do you send your cows to the groomers? 3. Your parlour just does plain milk, so are the facilities for chocolate, strawberry and banana somewhere else? 4. When you do farm visits, are there biscuits, and if so, what KIND of biscuits are there? All the best Tom. I really hope this farming thing catches on!
