READ MORE: fatberg-fighters.com
As highlighted by the BBC in their show Inside Out London, Fatberg's are a growing problem in our cities as more and more fat and oils are put into out sewer systems. At Hydro Cleansing we are committed to using the most advanced equipment and techniques such as our Megatron unit combined with a confined space team to remove all grease and fat deposits from drains and sewer's with minimal disruption.

Just the simple act of throwing your baby wipe out with the nappy and putting your cooking fats in the bin could save thousands of pounds a year. Simple actions that take all but a few seconds to complete!

Why doesn't the City of London impose a fine on the restaurants? They know it's a problem and that they're contributing to it. Make it illegal to dump fat and used oil. It's illegal in my city.

The city of london is the financial area, it covers one square mile. But I understand what you're saying. Most restaurants do recycle oil, especially as they now often get paid for waste oil but a huge quantity comes from tasks like washing up. It would be virtually impossible to police a ban and fine those responsible, short of asking to see disposal certificates as they already do.

The "Biodegradable" description on packaging should be taken with a pinch of salt, in ideal conditions sure, they'll break down, but when they clump together with other wipes and get encrusted with fat they don't degrade like they should.

I worked at mcdonalds many years ago and my manager once had a grease spill that was really bad. An entire 100 gallons of grease fell from the broken bottom of a master fryvat, and what did she do? Washed every ounce of it down the mop sink, ALL 100+ gallons, it took 4 hours to do. Now I know the consequences of such things..

Here in the United States any restaurant or business that cooks and prepares food is required to have something called a grease trap and it’s basically a box in the ground that collects the grease the fats in the food before it goes into the drain and they have people like me come every few months and pump the grease out and dispose of it properly where it’s turned in the diesel gasoline so I’m not sure overseas if you guys use grease traps as well but I would assume so. I’ve seen them as small as 20 gallons in as big as 10,000 gallons for example for a hospital they would have a 10,000 gallon grease trap.

Since eating establishments are required to recycle their oil / grease and have grease traps on the kitchen sinks, I would bet 90% of that fat comes from improper household disposal. In my neck of the woods we do not have public sewers but private septic systems, so grease issues come out of our pockets if we do stupid stuff. That's why we (at least me) always drain grease / oils into a container for proper disposal. It's not all that hard to pour bacon grease into a can or jar, or to wipe out that frying pan with a paper towel (after cooking a burger) before washing the cooking utensils. As for water bottles and such in the sewers, my best guess is they still have some storm drains connected to the sanitary sewers, which should be sorted out.

Does anyone know how tampons effect the sewers? Many people over my life have told me they are ok but I’ve never believed it. I’ve only flushed one tampon down the toilet in my life and felt like I singlehandedly caused a hinderance in our pipe system. If wet wipes don’t break down then it 100% doesn’t make sense if a normal tampon would, you know? Please answer, and thanks!

Hey folks, I'd like to share with everyone an idea that I use to deal with cooking oil in my house that won't cost you anything. Simply save all your dryer lint and when disposing that used oil just put enough in a shopping bag to absorb and hold it so it won't leak out all inside your can/ dumpster and toss it in the trash just before or on trash day.

And if you live somewhere like in the countryside where you aren't hooked up to the sewer system, you have to remove all that fat and wet wipes yourself even if it doesn't clog the pipes because it has no where to go once its in the tank unlike in the city where it goes to a treatment plant

This is why you shouldn't pour grease down the sink. If it doesn't clog up the plumbing on your end, there's a chance it'll build up with other stuff down in the sewer into one of these. Let oil and molten fat set or pour it into an empty milk bottle, then throw it in the bin instead.
